Thank you for this, my Mother is in her 80’s and has had many nasty falls, the impact of one damaged her left eye. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS VIDEO MORE, I learned to fall in Judo more than 4 decades ago and that saved me from more severe injury last night. I would strongly recommend that parents teach their children how to fall until it’s second nature, I learned at about 9 in Judo, last night at 54, it saved me from hospital. AND if you love wearing Crocs, best learn fast, I have had several nasty falls due to wet surfaces and my old Crocs not being up to the traction level required.

If you love crocs-might look into antislip crocs (restaurant worker shoes). They look almost the exact same, but I can feel them stop falls! They really work!

Given how serious falls can be to older folk, often leading to hospitalisation and immobilisation, death can be a very real outcome. So your message is hugely important, and certainly life-saving.

If you click on the settings icon (shaped like a gear) at the bottom-right of the KZbin player, one of the options is playback speed. You can slow it down to as slow as 0.25 speed (25% speed). That way you can watch it in slow-motion.

What? Did you not read my comments below???? These Judo "break falls" were never, ever, designed for use by elderly people in the natural environment- in other words the real world. These "break falls" are only for Judo practice, by young, fit Judoka that spent months (in the old days years) practising these "break falls" on smooth, even and unobstructed tatami mat surfaces..after a warm up and stretch. Any striking down of your arms on anything uneven will probably cause a fracture. A fracture that could be avoided by not swinging your arm down, since not having an even matted, surface is going to eliminate the benefit of using the arm in that manor any way.
@JohnJohnson-pq4qz

These are not a good idea in this context. These are judo "break falls' they are designed to be done only on mats and with clear unobstructed surfaces. If you try to use these on hard surfaces and or with obstacles around you can badly injure your arms and your body. Remember these are designed for a judo player who is being thrown by his partner on mats (tatami) and the partner also knows how to assist with the fall. I do not recommend this method for the natural environment.

@@JohnJohnson-pq4qzI’m not sure I agree with your premise. Taking a fall, if it’s on concrete, wood, grass, or a mat. HIS premise about using what you can is a heck of a lot more assistance then many videos you find. Using your arms as braces (even on a hard surface) will turn out much better than coming down on your head, shoulder, hip. And he’s really trying to help people. If you’re so confident about his advice. Where is your video . Life is difficult for a lot of people. Gratitude is more appreciative. And I hope you know that.

@@davidrich4758 As I have said, these are specific "tools" that are used in Judo training on mats and for nothing else. I learned these exact 'tools' in martial arts as well and am a professional martial arts and self defence instructor so am very familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of different aspects of martial arts "tools" and training . I also have taken some falls on hard surfaces (having lived in northern climes with lots of snow on the ground so it was more common than I like to admit... lol). Never for a second would I have even considered using these methods (even though I was young and quite proficient at them) they are far too dangerous in the natural environment (and..again..not designed to be used there). If there is room/space then the best response is to roll (also part of judo and other martial training and far more valuable and easy to find video on), something i did successfully because of my training. I think Rolls can work for older people and is far better on the body than 'hard' break falls for older people. There is no comparison, rolls are considered "soft' while "break falls' are "hard. As for Videos, there are many, many much better ones here on YT. some are by people who have specifically researched falls by older people- not just regurgitating generic judo falls. That is not my specialty, but i am a martial artist who knows the above material much better than the person making the video, and in my "expert' opinion, i do not recommend it and DO NOT use it myself under these conditions despite my proficiency. If someone is looking for my recommendation, then i suggest the Russian martial art of "Systema", it is an off shoot of Judo so they began with the same moves, but adopted it for the military to use in the natural environments, they are trained to fall and roll in the real world. There are even videos of them rolling and falling down stairs etc. That kind of thing is a lot closer to what it appears seniors need. oh by the way...the Systema people say exactly the same thing about swinging your arm down onto the ground...and i formed my opinions on this long before i had heard of Systema. I personally, do not think taking advantage of peoples ignorance by showing stupid stuff, well known to cause injuries ( by 'experts like myself and the Systema people)is doing much good for any one.

No kidding. Seniors don’t plan to fall. It’s always a surprise, and they don’t have automatic trained responses that click in within seconds from years of practice. This is a martial arts class. Inappropriate. Also, he has abnormally short legs. Not an insult, just an observation. Not very far to fall.
