@Contrariando Contra Yep, Senna was a faster driver than Prost, no doubt about it, a pure speed talent. Prost was more of a "better" driver in the way that he was more conservative, pure, etc. (that's why he's considered not as "the greatest" or "magic Prost", but as "the professor"), and he must had some links with Ballestre, so politically he had an advantage. BUT, you can't deny Prost's talent, that made him a really though rival to Ayrton. And yes, in 1993, Prost had the better car, Senna made an incredible season, we know the story. But in 1988, who's got more points ? Who was more consistant ? It was Prost. See, that's the thing between those two : Two really different drivers, but during one season, everything was possible between them.

I was lucky enough to witness these battles live on tv at the time. And although I was only 11, I seemed to somehow grasp that those races were the pinacle of F1. Both were exceptional drivers - Prost a calculated and seemingly cold blooded pro, Senna, undoubtedly the most skilled of them all, although perhaps sometimes too much driven beyond reason in his unstoppable pursuit of perfection. 25 years after the Tamburello tragedy took place at Imola, Senna is still spurred on by millions of Brazilians and race fans around the world, capturing the imagination unlike any other F1 driver. To this day, Ayrton's heritage effortlessly manages to embody the heart and soul of F1. Immortalized thanks to his charisma, racing legacy and legendary accomplishments, he shall remain forevermore, in my opinion, the champion of champions.

@@ed1nh0 Obrigado! Being Belgian, I had 2 F1 heroes at the time: our Belgian driver Thierry Boutsen (who was also an excellent driver in the wet - he even managed to beat Senna on 2 occasions in the rain, taking the win in the GP's of Canada & Australia in 1989), but Ayrton... Well, he was Magic with a capital M. Making his car dance to the rhythm of the samba on any track in any condition. Yesterday, I watched the entire Senna documentary once again to commemorate the sad 25th anniversary of his passing. F1 lost its charisma, its 'allegria' on the first of May 1994. A void which would never be filled... In memoriam.

@@michaelmassart2349 Senna was definitely faster over one lap than what Prost was, but i would say Prost was a more complete driver. Senna was better in qualifying and in wet conditions, while Prost had better racecraft than what Senna had, Prost was also better in conserving his tyres, saving fuel and taking care of his equipment than what Senna was. Senna had an aggressive driving style, while Prost had a smooth style. I would say Prost was the smartest driver of the two.

Being much older now, I have come to realize and appreciate Prost's skill and mindset. I am even convinced that nowadays, due to the mechanical / electronical complexity of F1, drivers need to adopt / embrace Prost his smoothness & conservative strategies.

@@marceladamcik2925 those were not the rules back then. Even years later, pilots were being pushed to rejoin the races from gravel traps. Do you really think that if it was a reason for DSQ back then, Balestre would have been looking for another 20 minutes after the race, for another reason to DSQ Senna? Senna did nothing wrong, he didn't gained any advantage, if something, he even lost more time. Not to mention Prost forcing that accident as he would have been unable to resist the pressure for another 6 laps. Basically, Senna gave Prost to taste from his own medicine, 1Y later. Senna was brilliant, he deserved that championship win! Nowadays people will be ashamed to behave like Prost did back in that day.

Prost is a talented and special driver. If we distinguish the careers of both Prost and Senna through arbitrarily Static means like numbers then one could argue that Prost was indeed the "better driver". Yet, Senna possesses a mystical, intangible factor, that in the end surpasses the capabilities of Prost and possibly almost every driver in F1 history...
@cavdragoon
@cavdragoon 3 жыл бұрын
Though I agree with your statement in general when comparing the two statistically one has to factor in that Prost had 12 seasons in F1 compared to Senna's 10. So yes his stats show better, but he achieved them over a longer period of time. Had Senna lived Prost's numbers would have been easily attainable. Aside from that I think you summed up Senna's "it" factor very well. Regards

Raff Silver I'm a big Senna fan but he would've had to win in Adelaide as well in appalling conditions. I think that Prost definitely turned in early at the chicane, but it was a VERY DESPERATE move by Senna and I'm inclined to call it a racing incident. I'm sure Senna wouldn't have opened the door for Prost. And he got a push start. That had to be against regs, amirite? Didn't matter. Senna proved his superiority by taking 26 poles over two years to Prost's 4. More wins also. Both were great but Senna was better.

Poles don't mean anything... because you don't know what Prost's strategy/game plan was. This is RACING.... not "time trials". Being the fastest guy around a track is only 1/3rd of the sport. The other 2/3 are, how well you navigate your car around other cars ("race craft")... and endurance.

If it had not been for this political chore of F1, Senna was to have been four times champion in his career. In fact, the Balestre himself admitted years later that he wanted to harm Senna. These are not numbers that define a true champion, the proof of which is that Senna is the greatest driver ever seen in F1 history, and Schumacher, even a phenomenon and full of titles, does not come to the feet of Senna's talent.

It's really cool watching Senna being determined so much to win and going for an overtake of Nannini on exactly the same chicane where minutes ago he had accident with Prost. Interestingly, no accident happened between these both drivers which sort of proves that Prost had rather taken an 'unusual' racing line. Having said that, I still truly consider Prost as a great driver though.

Senna's wheels were behind with Prost and in front of with Nannini. Just watch better the pictures. Without the help of the marshals, Senna could not have restarted the engine.

@Crixus Mauperthuis" Le professor" is how they call Alain Prost. I was back then a fan of Prost, and i think its hard to say who was better. Prost or Senna ? For sure is that Senna had more talent. Prost always calculating the hole race. For this the name le professor. I think you can compare Senna & Prost with Al pacino and Robert de Niro. Senna like Pacino and Prost like de Niro. But ok its my opinion. But the true is most of ex f1 drivers and f1 experts thinks Senna is 1 of, if not the best f1 driver in history.

I think that the political backlash managed to emotionally destroy senna for the last part of the season, regardless of being professional sportsmans they are very prone to that, specially when it's a fight for the championship between team mates.

The fued wasn't all that personal. They both wanted to win very much. They were the 1 and 2, interchangeably, drivers. They both had respect for each other and both wanted to clobber each other. Shrug. Prost was a pall bearer for Senna. He was not loving it.

I thought short-cutting is supposed to help you gain time. Senna lost a good 30 sec. to a minute outside of the track, then he lost at least 40 sec. more in the pits getting a new front wing

Man, the way Senna won this impossible race in Japan proves 3 things. First, he was the real champion of the 1990 F1 season. Second, Senna should have won that race. Third, he was a better racer than Alain Prost. Slightly perhaps, but still the better one. 🏎
