I have a feeling that there was a "dream team" of engineers in sennheiser from mid 90s to mid 2000s ish. After that, it's just small tweaking here and there.

Most of it's just comfort and tuning these days to appeal to casuals. Quantifiable technical capability should really be the starting point when looking at the price of a product.

The HD600 series (minus the new 660 models, which use the inferior 150 ohm driver) is renowned for not only its incredible tonality, but it's class-leading distortion figures from the midrange up (everyone knows the bass is a bit woolly) and its ability to dig deep into the recording and pull out tons of small details and dynamics that bring the recording to life. FR and confort are _not_ the only things that matter unless you're floundering about in mid-fi purgatory, because tone and comfort are the best you can hope for in that range.

@@fwabble Only when taken in proper context, i.e. _NOT_ the absurd 2Vrms SINAD that paid-off hacks like Amir at AudioScienceReview use, because that signal doesn't exist anywhere within the range of listening, and is a single data point isolated from an entire suite of very relevant data that is being erroneously omitted.

The tiny bit of coiling might ( _might_ ) help with 2 things. 1. Shock absorption to reduce physical sound transmission through the cable 2. Cable Strain/ Positioning

The coil is just annoying to me. It lays right on my collar bone and drags when I turn my head. I bought a Hart audio cable to replace it and it's been great.

I sold my HD600 on the first day I received the HD490 PRO. My preference is the mixing pads 100%.

For the dt 770 pro, many complaint about the highs, but after the pads get worn out, it becomes surprisingly much more nicer. I would say its underrated in the way you think the 6xx is underrated.

I'm glad I went with the HD560s, it's an amazing headphone that I got for a discount...the soundstage, immersion, sound and imaging is really good, I'll always keep this headphone till I die because it's just a good-all-rounder, everything sounds good thanks to that neutral and flat sound. I suggest this for first timers.

you should. bigger the cup=more bass you can "afford'" without masking mids... these are smaller than 600 series but more bassy.. so you enjoy less bassy mixig pads.

I have 6xx and 560s...for some reason I use 560s all the time, I think comfort is really important if you have to wear headphones for many hours.

@@drizzlydr4ke I second getting the ZMF pads (suede perforated). the 6xx were unbearable to wear for me with stock pads once my ears started touching the driver but I got the ZMF pads and that problem is gone forever.

I own both the 560S and the 490 Pro. I have to say, despite the memory foam pads of the 490 Pro, the 560S is more comfortable than the 490. The 560S is the only headphones that I can completely forget are on my head. That doesn't happen with the 490 Pro. After a while of wearing the 490 Pros, I have to remove them.

@@ChrisKeymanI found them very similar to my 400 Pros which are apparently identical to the 560S, but I think they are a little different or at least have better quality control. The 400 Pro/560S sound like a middle ground between the two 490 Pro pads. There may have been an improvement in the tinny sound of the 560S, but I was so distracted by the comfort issues and I am going off memory, so I can’t really say for sure. I didn’t find it impressive or comfortable compared to my 400 Pro.

@@ChrisKeyman The 490 is a slightly improved version of the 560s, offering more bass and slightly better sound separation. As a music producer hobbyist, I've used them for mixing purposes. However, for casual listening or enjoying music and movies, I believe the 560 is the better choice.

I own the 560S and I find it an amazing value proposition. It's pretty much the only audio output device I own where I don't feel a need to EQ anything. Even my Blessing 2 Dusk requires some EQing to sound really good to me.

For me it's the HD600 and Sundara.. sure you could tweak it but you don't need to, it's good enough. Touch of mids for the Sundara or maybe bass or something for the 600? They're good enough as is to not bother really.

Hi DMS, another great video, the 490 is well designed and good build quality and of course with the plus version with a great carrying case with extra cable . I have 6xx with custom cans bass mod , helps with bass at lower end and fitted thicker pads too . I also like and own the Hd560s but for some reason the 560 in the Uk is about £130 , I don’t understand why in the Us is around $200 headphone compared but compare to the 6xx is the same price in but its a better build better cable . and this is why i own a lokius. every single pair of cans i own are perfect. cause i have 6 bands to adjust and when anything is slightly off, i can make it right as rain… after i get things tuned in, i can then apply those same values on my digital EQs we really should bring back the physical EQ…

I am interested in 490 for travel. Single sided cord that is adjustable and cups that have a little more movement making them a lot easier to wear around your neck. Obviously not good for airplanes but general walking around / work.

Light enough to take out of the house, for sure. I used to walk around with the legendary Sony MDR-7506 connected to a MiniDisc Walkman. The Sennheiser HD 490s remind me a little of those Sonys, even with the open back.

Great review DMS,so good in fact I just ordered a set after owning the hd600 set for the better part of three years. I put the ZMF perforated suede pads on and did the full on Custom Cans Copper mod . Both upgraded I highly recommend. The hd490 pro looked just interesting enough in the uppers to help my hearing which is starting to fade in the treble range being I am 65. And the number one point that sold me….fit and comfort, especially for long listening sessions. The Sennheiser sound with a modern twist and all day comfort…..what’s not to like…?

I own 598, 560S, 6XX, 660S and 660S2. I also have HD800S. Each has something special but I'm in love with 660S2. It brings the 600 series magic with a deeper view into the music. They just sound more like live music. They can now be found for a more reasonable price. They bring me a lot of joy. I also own Hifiman HE1000 SE. Incredible headphones but sometimes (a lot of times) the Sennheisers are just what the doctor ordered. 😁 Don't think I'll be adding the 490 to my collection. Doesn't sound like they're beating anything I already own.

Ugh. I couldn't listen to the 660 for more than like 10 minutes before needing to rip them off my head because of how God awful the upper mids were. And they're less resolving and less dynamic than the 600/650 on top of having worse tone because that 150 ohm driver is a piece of shit compared to the 300 ohm one in the original line.

I agree. At first listen the 660S seems to have more detail/clarity but as you listen to them longer you soon realize they don't have the 600 series magic. No bass and very shouty. I found them fatiguing. Out of my collection they sound completely different from the rest of my Sennheisers. Now the 660S2 is a completely different story. The magic is back in full effect and they now elevate the series to the best sound yet for me. Just yesterday I decided to do some A/B comparisons with the 6XX and 560S. Yes, they are still excellent sounding cans but the second I go back to the 660S2 the elevation in sound and musicality is instantly heard. 660S2 for the win at the right price. 🙂

@@alondite215 I agree with you, on these awful upper mids. All 600 series headphones have them. I still own the 6XX, but I always EQ the upper mids down a notch, otherwise the piano and violin will just pierce through my ears.

that little coil in the cable would actually be so nice, my cable gets caught every now and then and it ends up pulling on the headphone, but that would help alleviate that, i want a cable like that now

I have both (490 and 6XX). You mentioned “sharp” briefly but not in details, I define sharp as fast transient, and I find the 490 Pro is much faster and punchier than the 6XX, the difference it’s like sitting in the front row vs the middle row. IMO, this is one of the differences.

If you EQ them both to Harman the 490 sounds just as mushy and rounded than 6XX, but timbre for example remains worse.

@@hartyewh1 I still feel 490 has more timbre, because of faster drivers and more presence. BTW, I find harman target too much around 1-2kHz region, I always EQ it down a bit.

@@dc99yt Yeah, sure the target itself is just that, but to compare headphones I find it necessary to bring the FR's as close as I can since tuning influences all aspects of sound. I don't notice any benefits for the 490 over 6XX except the tiniest of benefit in bass dynamics at the cost of depth and weight. 6XX is a warm and full bodied headphone while 490 is much leaner, but it is just a tuning difference and not a technical capability as far as I can tell while 6XX (or 600) has such lovely timbre that most headphones ten times the price don't outperform.

@@hartyewh1 I agree. That’s why I’ve decided to keep the 490 Pro, I see it as a different headphone, it doesn’t replace my 6XX. But with some Hi-Res recordings that have a warm tone and tones of details and presence, the 490 is a better choice. Also on the 6XX, I do not like the two-blob presentation just outside your ears when I’m just trying to relax.

Comparing the 6xx to these, it probably doesn’t come down as much to subjectivity as it does to what these headphones were designed to be used for. Bearing the “pro” marque, the HD 490 Pro having such tuning makes perfect sense.

Because he's a hack who says whatever he's paid to say. The best audio advice always comes from the old, grizzled audiophiles who've been around the block a few dozen times and have heard basically everything there is to hear, on top of probably making some of their own gear. Stay away from basically any KZbin audio guy and get your advice from a dedicated audio community of the aforementioned grizzled audiophile veterans.

I think the small section of coiled cable is not so much for length as it would be for if you get cable snagged on something it does not jerk your head as much or unplug the cable/damage port

I want them purely for comfort. Im debating between these and the 660s2, but i don't lovecthe fit of the 6xx so if the 660 is the same as that, id lean tiward the 490.

@@W1LLi4m_ neither one yet, I have the akg k712 pro and it's so comfy that it's hard to bite the bullet and spend money on another pair. But if I sell my 6xxs I could maybe justify it. I'll try to come back and let you know if I get them.

490 Pro is way better than the entire HD 5xx/6xx series. Better in every aspect, from build to sound quality. The only negative is the velour pads sound worse and are not worth putting on at all. Mixing (fabric) pads have much better tonal balance. People who say 560s or 600/650 are better need to have their ears tested.

@@TaeglicheNarzisst Yes, of course. I have returned to closed-backs though, more specifically the DT 770 Pro X Limited Edition. But I might switch to the MMX 330. An open-back headset with a good microphone can be useful.

I love mine. I look at them as much more comfortable than the HD 6XX while sounding almost as great. Is extra comfort and better pad design worth the higher price? I decided yes. Others will be hesitant, especially now that some planar headphones are available for about the same price. Connected to the Topping L70 headphone amp, the Sennheiser HD 490 delivers its maximum potential. Near reference sound, a soundstage that feels like its in a large space, and all-day wearing comfort. But admittedly, not as great as the less comfortable HD 6XX.

Detail is transient response. How well do the guitars, for example, poke out of the mix as opposed to being smeared across the audio spectrum. Do the lead instruments sound like a mid-frequency wash or like several instruments playing simultaneously?

I have a differing opinion: If you like the Sennheiser HD 600 series, get the FiiO FT3. The sound is very Sennheiser-like with better bass/treble extension and sound stage. It also comes better equipped. It sounds immensely good on tubes.

This is incredibly false. The FT3 has sucked-out upper mids and ear-stabbing treble. And their resolution and ability to track transient dynamics is dogshit by comparison.

All your reasoning is solid but for one thing, you can only get the 6xx in North America, if you try to buy them from Europe the price to performance goes completly away and the hd 490 become a much more "affordable" option.

I think that the design matters the most for 490pro, being a headphone designed for mixing or professional use, they can fold and does have a carrying case for premium package version, thus making them as portable as a xm5, so it is good if you need to travel with 560 ish quality sound, but I still find them to be overpriced, a 300-350 price for package with case would be more acceptable

i think I've gotten to a point with my HD6XX where it is a sound signature that I am comfortable with. It's what I prefer to listen to so I won't be upgrading but from a purely technical stand point I can agree that maybe the 490 definitely has some characteristics that I may enjoy more. but Im happy where I am.

So these are twice the price of the HD 599 pair I have. How do these compare to those, I wonder? I'm pretty happy with the 599's but they're like 7 years old and starting to fall apart in some ways, but I'm hesitant to spend 200 more for a newer set of headphones.

490 Pro > HD 6XX. 490 Pro has better stereo imaging/separation, better bass presence and control. And yes the 490 Pro is more comfortable to wear.

Since Maxwell was so tight on my head I could hear my own heartbeat… I am looking for something else. Probably less sealing! Would love wireless but everything is closed. So next thing is something wired to maybe run of a dualsense or with usb c. This looks interesting. Would it be ok for games immersion and music? Not looking for footsteps only headphone. Looking for comfort!

as far as i know 650 and 660S2 are great for vintage recordings but 650 produced before 2019. 650 quality of new items now is bad.

Well DMS I think you and I probably agree on the fact that the 6XX is the best headphone. I have an Atrium which i think objectively sounds better than the 6XX, however, I am not going to wear the Atrium literally all day, the 6XX is just a more comfortable headphone to wear and use for everyday purposes, it's (relatively) cheap overall and very very cheap in comparison to something like the Atrium, even though I love my atriums, it's my favorite headphone for listening to music in fact, but it does cost 2500$. I think that this is pretty much the highest form of compliment you could possibly give to a headphone, when considering everything, price, comfort, tuning, etc. So yeah there are better sounding headphones than the 6xx imo, but overall when taking everything into consideration, there is probably nothing better out there for me personally either. Good review as always, the 490 seems like a good headphone and there are people out there that will definitely enjoy it, however most recent sennheiser headphones just seem harder to recommend because they have so many legendary / great headphones out there already at a lower price than the most recent models.

The 600/650. The best headphone at just being a good headphone. Easy to listen to, easy to drive, comfortable, neutral tuning, indestructible. Not the best sounding out there, and my Sundara bests it while staying fairly neutral.. but it's not massively different, really, in the grand scheme of audio devices most people listen to. It gets you 90% of the way there from everything else.

I have the DX3 pro+ and thinking to upgrading to these but the fact that they have the same driver as my 560s is keeping me back from doing it. you'll never enjoy smaller cup headphones if you expirienced 600 series. 490 are TOO small for the bass they have put in there.

Hi! As you asked for suggestions, i would love to see a video on the DALI IO-12. I bought it and i already had the Focal Bathys, i can say it is as impressive as the Bathys, while sounding REALLY different. A good companion for different moments. I definitly think you should test it. To be complete, a video on the other high end Bluetooth headphone The T+A Solitaire T would be great. I didn't hear it yet, but it seems promising.

I bought the 6XX a month ago after owning PC38X, Sundara, Edition XS, Focal Elegia, and MM-100 and I think they're pretty incredible. I wish I would have purchased the 6XX over the Sundara back in 2020 because they're just better in a lot of ways IMO. Still have the others and love the Edition XS and MM-100 (Elegia is my closed back option for loud environments) but it's really impressive how good the 6XX for $180 and they're super comfortable. Also, I blame you, DMS, for consistently talking about 6XX because it made me feel like I still had to buy them even though I was purchasing much more expensive headphones LOL.

@@mitchhifi9192 IMO, the stock FR tuning of the Elegia without EQ is really awful. Oratory's EQ profile makes them sound really good for a closed-back. I still prefer the 6XX to them because they're open-back, and that's my preference, but I love them as closed-backs with EQ and enjoy them a ton. I will also say that the 6XX has some interesting qualities in the mids and treble that none of my other headphones have which is part of why I wish I would have bought them years ago.

@@rionvaletaala4666 TLDR; MM-100 if you EQ MM-100 stock FR probably isn't as good as the Sundara, but with EQ I prefer them to the Sundara with or without EQ. Stock Sundara does sound pretty good, especially for the price, and has some unique properties to it, but don't necessarily improve that much with EQ. The Edition XS and 6XX are fantastic and only require a simple bass shelf, but the MM-100 and Elegia require quite a bit more EQ, but also improve substantially. I prefer the build quality of the MM-100 to the Sundara, it's just straight up a better-built headphone. Edition XS IMO is just better than Sundara in every single way so I just think that's a pure upgrade. The MM-100 and Sundara do have some different qualities and the MM-100 aren't as wide in soundstage but there is a lot of music I listen to where there is this closeness/detail retrieval thing that happens in the mix which I love. Also, I think the Sundara are absolutely garbage headphones for gaming, they had the worst imaging or directional accuracy I've used in a decent headphone. I will not keep a headphone that sounds and performs like shit in games, so all the headphones I have right now I don't feel the need to take off or switch when I start gaming at night.

I've been mixing with headphones for 2 years for local problems I have 8 different models (the classics) the 490 has so many advantages, the weight, comfort, stereo image, frequencies which do not attack while being straight . for me it's the best

There's only so much they can do with a pair of headphones delivering sound to our ears. There has already been made a headphone for all genres and tastes soundwise. Now it's just down to releasing new ones cause people likes new stuff and companies needs money. Nothing wrong with that, just saying. Better looks, comfort maybe, can still improve, but sound... Whatever your'e after it has already been made and then you can add eq to that and even more is covered for you with less headphones you have to buy.

Well, I have the Vali 2++ with GE 5670 5-star red tube and Drop 58x phones. Impeccable sound for the money. The Vali 3 should be even better with 100 volts on the plate.

I had the 490 Pro briefly and I returned it for a discounted 660S2. The 490 Pro is more correct but less fun sounding. With the fabric mixer pads they were very similar to the 560S/400 Pro if you have ever heard those. At least to my ears. I did not love the sound of the velour producer pads because they pushed vocals back. The 660S2 is much less spacious but more pleasant in my opinion. Vocals are more direct and the bass hits a little harder despite worse extension because there is a bigger hump in the mid-bass I think. From memory, the 660S2 has better resolution than the 490 Pro and just sounded more immersive despite the smaller soundstage. I returned the 490 Pro because I found it very uncomfortable. The dust covers are a rough threaded material with raised L and R lettering that touched and irritated my ears. I also couldn’t quite get them to sit on my head in a way where I would forget about them like I can with the 660S2. I preferred the fabric mixer pads to the velour producer pads because they have much better clarity and were more similar to the 560S that I was switching from, but those are also uncomfortable. I have no comfort issues with the 660S2 and vastly prefer its ergonomics, but it sounds like I am in the minority. The 490 Pro or NDH 30 are likely better professional tools than the 660S2 but the 490 Pro definitely didn’t wow me the way the 660S2 did. It just felt like a moderately improved 560S with better build quality for over double the price with bad ergonomics sprinkled on top.

@@indranilmitra6535 I haven’t explored amps at all yet. I just use my M chip Macbook which comes with a rather capable audio system that can drive high impedance headphones. I am not sure I want to fall into another expensive audio rabbit-hole but maybe I will eventually.

I own the 400 Pro Studio Reference and they sound awesome through my IFI Zen Dac/Amp version 2. They are great for their price at $250.00. You listen to good mastered music like Rush and Led Zepplin is sound like your IN the studio. Anything lossless or Flac audio they just kick azz!

NDH-30 or HD490? That’s my question. As I read they have similar drivers. Are they also similar tuned? The HD490 has a lot more comfort and things to offer so I tend to the HD490 without having listened to it yet. But in the end it all comes down to the sound. So which one is better? If they are similar in sound I would go for the Hd490 now. So please help!

@@freundchenrecords I was in the same situation as you and tried both side by side. The only thing thats better with the NDH is bass extension and quantity. Everything else, including comfort was better with the 490. The NDH also has 2 big flaws imho. They have a big dip at around 11k hz making them sound dull and, more importantly, they change how they sound depending on how you wear them. Your ears have to be dead center for the best sound. Problem is, you likely put them on slightly different each time or they might shift over time while you wear them. I returned the NDH and im very happy with the 490. fyi - i also own the 560s and 600 and tried and returned 650 and 660s2. Out of them all, the NDH had the best bass, the 600 the best mids and the 490 the best highs. Forgot to mention: I only use the mixing (cloth) pads as they sound more neutral to me. Hope that heps.

@@tyansathanks for your answer. And yes, I‘ve also experienced that the NdH-30 sounds different when sitting differently on my head. I also didn’t like that the cable is on the right side and that they only put a 3m cable in the box. The carrying case is also a joke. For 630 Euro you can expect more. So I sent them back. BUT: I really liked the sound. Is the bass extension so much better on the NDh-30? And: I read that there’s a 4kz dip on the HD490. Do the vocals really sound nasal? What I really like from the reviews on the Hd490 is the weight and the comfort and that I‘m able to choose where to put the cable in. The carrying case and the software is also a great addition. Did you try the software? To choose between the different sound areas to test your track seems great to me. I‘m really more into the Hd490 but I wasn’t able to listen to them, yet.Don’t wanna do a mistake.

The bass extension is noticeable but not substantial. I have done own measurements of around 90 headphones using modified in ear mics. On my head and ears, the difference between the NDH and 490 (mixing pads) is +-2db up to 5k hz apart ftom the bass that measures 4db more at 30hz. So they are nearly identical (when worn correctly) That means that on my ears there was no 4k hz dip. Compared to my 600 the 490 is +-2db up to 8k hz but has a small dip of 4db at around 3k hz. Again, this is noticable but not substantial. They do not sound nasal to me. I tried the software but did not like any of the available presets. Since you seem to live in the eu, you could just try the 490 and refund if you dont like them within 14 days and in some shops even after that. Do not activate the software until you are sure to keep the headphones. Otherwise the refund might get denied. You sound like you settled for the 490 anyways, so go for it!@@freundchenrecords

Hm mixing pads with a low shelf filter to bump up the bass a little bit should do it, by looking at the graph. But I would listen to them before making any conclusion or adjustment.

Honestly, if you're this particular about sound, even the bleedthrough from closed-backs will ruin it. If you insist, you'll need something with noise cancelling, and then even getting decent sound is a challenge, never mind specific tuning.

I own HD25 Special Edition (velour pads) and HD650. Both are very similar in tone; HD25 has slightly more bass and smaller stage but not too different otherwise. HD25 cons are: not as comfortable, price is around $200 and its on-ear, but I think its a great neutral/closed/portable option. Just my 2 cents.

TLDR was pretty much spot on. Been wearing my 490 since Wednesday, and I love it so much more than I did the 6XX. Comfort firstly; on my big ass head I literally could not wear the 6 series cans for more than 30 minutes without getting headaches from the clamp force (even after bending the metal). I can wear these for 6+ hours no problem. Yes the vocals on the 6 series are better, but the veil is removed on the 490, and the better bass adds so much enjoyment. I honestly think these punch so far above their price. Imaging, soundstage, detail are all great. To me they're almost like a mini, slightly muddier 800S with INSANE comfort for $400. I love these and def will keep them in the collection. I've worn these more than my Calderas this week haha so if that says anything

When I think detail I think resolution/ clarity. How much of each element I can "observe". Like listening through my AIAIAI Wireless +, which I will be selling because they greatly disappoint me, I always feel like I am losing perception of the audio.

To me it looks like the graphs in 9:49 do not match. on the upper graph it looks like the midrange is out of the preference band but below it is still inside. it looks like the preference band was moved to much up/down in one of the charts.

I prefer the 6XX to the 600. If you get Dekoni Velour pads for it it doesn't come with the foam insert over the driver so you can literally lift some of that veil.
