The Sennheiser HD 650 is my favorite headphone for mixing and mastering, being able to pick out every detail in sound without the need to have ear fatiguing peaks in the frequency is fantastic, the only drawback is that they need a good headphone amplifier, driving them direct from my Scarlett interface results in a surprisingly dark and muddy sound.

I got them for 1,5 years now (XX Drop edition) Combined with sonarworks Reference system, they sound amazing! Even without a preamp (haven;t had one yet) they sound clear and precise! I know that Maarten Vorwerk (ghostproducer) uses them to check his mixes!

They are indeed very good. I believe 200-250 OHM is the maximum recommendation for most USB powered audio interfaces. That said, 300 OHM will still work just fine in most cases. You'll lose a little bit of volume, but it shouldn't be a problem. You should never crank up the volume that much anyways. :) I know many professionals who use the HD 650 for mixing and producing. Funny that you mention sonarworks reference, I actually have a copy laying on my desk right now. I'm planning on making a video about it real soon. Should be very helpful for people with a typical "bedroom studio" which acoustically is usually less than ideal for mixing. :)

Being 300ohm these things need a LOT of power to do them justice. Personally, I drive them with a Burson Conductor III headphone amp & it brings out the very, very best of these cans. Some people say that they are a bit light on bass. Well, plug them into your cell phone or laptop and yes, they will be, they're 300ohm headphones! A decent headphone amp like the Burson I have belts out 7.5 watts @ 16ohm or .58w at 300ohm which is enough to implode your head at 50% volume. If you have the HD650's or are thinking of buying a pair, do yourself a favor and invest in a decent headphone amp. You don't have to spend an idiotic amount of money on a Burson like I did, there are plenty out there.

HD650 rules for enjoying music since it was introduced long ago. I don't feel that that the midbass is all that tight, but coming from an HD449, of course it is a substantial step up. HD650 only gets better with a headphone amplifier with +/-15V internal PSU rails, as opposed to your average amp or interface with +/-4.8V or +/-9V. The downside of that is that such amps are typically expensive, like audio-gd amps. Only cheap option I'm familiar with is the Monoprice Liquid Spark amp. Running the HD650 out of a low-voltage amp muddies the bass and transients, in my experience. Part of what makes HD650 feather-light on the head is its tight, but comfortable, grip so the headphone weight isn't completely on the top of your head. Bonus points if you compare that Neumann NDH20 to the Sennheiser HD630VB that it seems to be based on. ;)
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic 4 жыл бұрын
I really like the HD650's. As Said in the video, there's some slight amplification in the low end, but it's not a huge problem. When using Sonarworks Reference 4, it compensated for it nicely and now they are just as flat as my AKG's. :) A great way to switch between mixing and listening.

Buy the way, the Sennheiser HD 600’s are very similar to the HD650s (and even a bit cheaper). In fact, they are almost exactly the same. Difference is: If you play a lot with stereo, go for the HD 650’s, but for general mixing, the narrower stereo imaging of the HD 600s works better. Though you can’t really go wrong with either. This has been a public message from The Acoustic Rabbit Hole

Which headphones do you consider as "references" for mixing and mastering? I have the Sennheiser 58X Jubilee from Massdrop, and this is almost flat according to many audiofiles and people that measured this headphone. Applying an equalization from sonarworks the sound is definitely flat but there is not much difference between equalization and stock sound.
@Jason75913
@Jason75913 4 жыл бұрын
then you are good to go alternatively, look at K702 if you decide to try something new, needs very little EQ'ing for flat, reference sound; sound design schools in the US swear by this headphone or the "toilet bowl white" K701 version; many call it like placing your music/mixes under a microscope, the Sennehisers are not as analytical save for HD800

as you said the hd 650 doesn't have a sense of openness in the treble because in the hd650 the treble sounds quieter. think about it though so that you have a speaker whose treble sounds quieter than midrange and bass. Guess where its treble energy is directed? the answer is around 200hz. Personally, I would prefer headphones where all frequencies stand out, and there would be no way for treble to sound quieter.

It won't affect your microphone or your sound card in any way. It''s just a headphone amplifier, so you hook it up between the headphones and the audio interface / sound card. It can be a bit tricky setting up USB microphones in general. I usually recommend using a standard XLR microphone and hooking it up to the audio interface directly.

It will not sound as good as a dedicated preamp, but it’s reassuring to know that you can still plug in and get a decent reference headphone. the headphones have high Ohm impedance it basically means they have to draw a lot more power to sound louder(over simplification) so if i were to plug in a pair with 30 ohm impedance into my phone at full volume they would be rather loud, if i plugged in headphones with an impedance of 250 Ohms they would sound rather quiet, the amp supplies more power to the headphones so they can sound louder(over simplification) if you want headphones that dont really need an amp id recommend the Philips Audio Fidelio X2HR, or dt 770 (lowest Ohm version)
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic 4 жыл бұрын
As Foxy said, it's about the resistance in the headphones themselves. Most USB powered audio interfaces support up to 200-250 Ohm headphones. These are 300. They are just a little bit over the recommendation so it will usually still work well from what I've heard, but generally you want more power to be able to fully control headphones with higher impedance. Quality headphones often have high impedance. There's a link to a cheap amp in the video description, that can be used in conjunction with any sound card or audio interface.

Do you have a USB powered audio interface? You might need an external Amp. USB powered audio interfaces can't deliver much power.

Most USB audio interfaces supports up to 200 / 250 ohm. They're liimited by the power they can draw from the USB port. USB C interfaces generally get slightly more power. I know many people who use these with no problem, but in order to get the most out of them I would recommend an amp. You can get good amps for cheap on amazon. Alternatively, use an audio interface with external power supply.

The HD 650 does not ship in that box. I got a bigger one with black foam inside. For people that wants to buy the HD 650, just buy the HD 6XX from massdrop, same headphones for much less money.

Really good model but NOT for producing EDM music, like psytrance or progressive trance for example. Or any other EDM styles where sub bass is very important. If you need control sub bass or if like listen sub bass - DO NOT buy Sennheiser HD 650

What kind of amp did you use with these? Did you hook them up directly to the audio interface, that could cause the low-end to sound a bit weak. These are fairly flat, and I think that while others might have more low-end in general, which can make listening to bass-heavy music more enjoyable, having a flat representation is generally better for mixing. To humans louder always sounds better, so when you have more bass it usually sounds better too. That doesn't necessarily means that it's better for mixing. It could cause your mix to sound weak on other systems, because you think there's more than enough bass, while you mix, when in reality there's not. It's part of the reason why I generally recommend dedicated reference headphones for mixing. Reference headphones are as flat as possible. They will generally sound quite flat and boring, especially in the low-end, and that's not very exiting to listen to. However, it's good for mixing, and I believe this is part of the reason why the HD650 are embraced by so many producers as well, because they are quite flat, while still being enjoyable to listen to as well, so they can be used for both. :)

@@ALifeTheKidd The HD650 are great if you need good all-round headphones that are good for both listening to music and mixing. However, if you want dedicated reference headphones for mixing then the AKG 612 PRO are really good ( amzn.to/33gYMsw ) If you need closed headphones then the Neumann NDH20 is also really good. ( amzn.to/2F4A0C0 )

@@FireWalkMusic HD 650 is really good model with very flat frequency response curve, but not for control sub-bass during mixing process. The point of -3 dB of HD650 starts with 90 Hz approximately, -6 dB about 60 Hz, so the MOST important frequency range where the kick drum usually works (50-60 Hz) represented very bad. And sub-bass (less than 30 Hz) even worse. For example, HD 280 works MUCH better with sub bass. I use Motu M2 audio interface

Indeed. Open headphones are generally better suited for listening and mixing as well. However, they might not be ideal if you're not alone while listening, since sound will spill out.

HD660s are way better on clarity , tightness , faster, imaging without veil with only 80 euros more... They only lost on smoothness compared to HD650

Hd660 is $399 whereas hd 650 is $200 on massdrop. Yes, 660s are tighter compared to 650, but the improvements from 650 to 660 is not worth extra $200.

You usually get what you pay for. The 660 is definitely a step up from the 650, no doubt about that. But then you could argue that if you just pay a bit more, then you can get something that's even better than the 660 as well. :)

@@FireWalkMusic Thats a great reply can u tell me what headphone is a step up from HD650 and HD660 ? Because the only ones that i listen and was step up was the Focal Clear that cost 1.400 euro. And Maybe the Drop Focal Elex that cost more than 800 euro with vats and taxes to come in Europe. I would think about Hifiman products but quality problems are very true i change 2 times under warranty my Sundara so i am very sceptical about Hifimam again. Maybe Audeze but some people say its a side grade not step up on everything.

@@louislu1067 I understand that but The World its not just US of America u know. Its Europe Canada Africa etch etch and I am from Europe ...i Bought HD58x and 6XX so my 6XX cost 220 plus 20 plus 40 taxes plus 20 vats So 300 euro in the end and waited for them 3 months . HD650 cost 330 HD600 300 and HD660s cost 380 In Europe so yeah HD660 worth that extra 50 euros . And all that for the new versions... The Drop HD6XX that they send me was the OLD stock ones with R L marks outside the Headband and not the new ones like Thoman .de . Anyways for 200 IN US ofcorse its way better value the HD6xx but in the rest of the world nope its not. And not forget about warranty ... I contact drop they told me free warranty and was very polite but i have to wait another 3 months and pay the Vats inport again. So doesnt worth it .
