Pretty happy to have just picked up a pair of "as new" 6xx for just under $130. Nice improvement from HD560s been using last couple of years. Interested to hear about the 'black' silk HD650. Subscribed.

curious to know what improvements hd6xx has over hd560S? i was going to buy the hd6xx, but was told they are similar to the hd650 which i didn't like the sound of! in fact, i sold my hd650 black silk in favor of the hd560S! are the improvements comfort or sound based?

@@h-dawg6462 Believe HD560 and HD6xx very similar, more of a rebrand. Sound is subjective. Also have the HD560s and could not go back to them since owning the HD6xx. Find the HD560s harsh compared to the HD6xx.

@@laowai2000 do you have the 1st iteration of the 560's with a 3 meter cable and large connector? b'cos those have an overly bright tuning. the 2nd revised 2022 version with the shorter cable has the better balanced tuning.

Thank you for the shout out! I’m not sure what pads are on the HD580BP, They are an aftermarket velour pad which is very similar to the stock 6X0 pads, but half of the inner side of the pad has a pleather lining. Shouldn’t be massively different from stock, maybe a subtle change with bass and resonant behaviors. Just wanted to clarify that, because I don’t believe they are made by Brainwavz and I’m not entirely sure of the make. I got the 580BP with those pads from the previous owner.

Correction from Wayne: The 580bp pads are not brianwavz microsuede, they are a ‘velour knit, similar to 6x0 stock pads with a pleather backing on half of the underside’

The Custom Cans mod kit for this series of headphones is well worth trying. The copper ring makes the bass significantly more dynamic on my HD650 (early model), and is easily reversible if you don't like it. The replacement foams are not reversible though.

You are right. I had experience this my self. I went through total of 3 pairs of hd 6xx and 3 pairs of hd 650. All of them I ended up selling or returning. First 2 pairs of hd 6xx which I bought on 2020 were almost identical. There 2 nd one was a replacement unit . I ended up selling the replacement unit. The second time when I bought the 6xx on 2021 , there was a difference in sound. It was less bassy and more extended in the treble . I immediately noticed it Unfortunately there was some channel imbalance I noticed so ended up returning it. But when after I returned it I noticed how good they sounded, which I didn't feel when I sold the 2020 units. They I bought the hd 650 same year. Went through 3 pairs.. one was replacement unit. All of them sound slightly different. Not in huge way. Just couple of difference here and there. Still I will argue there is still a significant difference between the 6xx and 650. 650 is warm and bassy. 6xx is little more extended in the treble. I would say good 6xx>650.

@@nyvoreviews5443 No. All of them were silver screen. Back screen ones are very old version, pre 2007, and they don't don't make them anymore. But what I noticed is the new hd 600 which I bought only last month has a slight metallic grey almost transparent screen instead of the regular silver screen. To me they sounded better than the previous hd 600 which had silver screen.. My assumption is black screen ones should sound different. The baffle screen is there to pass through some of the resonance that will end up in the chamber. In hd 650 case the less accoustic impedance of the baffle material , the better will be the sound. Even sennheiser said it themselves. If you look up their video of hd 600 family, they say that the reason they switched to fine steel mesh in the hd 660s is due to the fact that it has far fewer accoustic impedance variation and all hd ,660s will sound the same.

@@Tesseract9630 the black silk 650 is remarkably better than both 6xx. Which must mean the black silk 650 is also much better than the silver screen 650. I’ve only tried the black silk hd600 so I can’t say for sure which is best but I think more people have tried black silk 600 than black silk 650, and the common consensus I’ve been hearing from others is that black silk is the best 600 (but imo it’s still not that great).

@@Tesseract9630 it also has a treble roll off, but it has very nice mids. 580 and 540gold 600 ohm are better at treble. But Hifiman ,and of course Stax are a lot better at treble.

dam, 650 is a pretty big surprise. Tried 650 and 600 way back and found 600 to be a fair bit warmer. Tho i got no idea which variants those were lol. Also, love to see the affiliate shilling callout xD

There's spawn from HD580: HD58X However, the speaker is different with 150 ohm impedance and improved sensitivity for smartphone

I took the 660S and I'm quite disappointed I feel that it lacks naturalness and smoothness, I'm treble sensitive and I still have trouble listening to it. should i get the 650?

Yup, you can absolutely go for hd650. I have hd650 and I'm treble sensitive too and i didn't find it sibilant at all not even 1%

yes there is a difference. 580 has more air frequencies without being harsh. I like 580 more, especially after whatever pads where on the 580 which helped the stage... i asked Wayne but he didn't know what the pads were.

Based on what people in my comments section are telling me, my current 6xx is Romanian. It’s definitely better than the other two 6xx’s I had. However, I still don’t recommend either one.

@@WakeUpB2P 650bs I can recommend. 6xx sounds congested with an unnatural presentation, caused by harmonic distortion. I’m pretty sensitive to awkward stages. And the bad version of 6xx has a lot problems, it’s overly-damped and it has the same problems as the good 6xx but much worse.

Never tried 58x, I had pc-363d and pc-38x and have tried 660s a few times. Pc-363d is terrible Pc-38x is hard to recommend because it’s needs a good amp and still doesn’t sound good when amped well. 660s, is a unique one, overall I wouldn’t recommend 660s mainly because of price. 660s is something people should try first before buying. It’s not going to be for everyone. I would rank 660s higher than both versions of 6xx.

@@nyvoreviews5443 HD58X has higher sensitivity and smartphones I have don't have problem playing. However, PC38x has a penny lower sensitivity than HD58X on certain smartphone. Both are great for portable equipment nonetheless

Well Il add to the controversy I guess, with my 6XX which is supposed to be a hd650 worth at least 300$. when compared to my 50$ closed gaming headphones heavily EQed to my preference which surprisingly ended up slightly close tunning to the 6XX, there is an improvement in clarity but ehhhh. would somebody coming from a closed gaming headphone to a 300$ audiophile headphone be disappointed? kinda. granted without EQ there is no comparison. the difference is not 500% as the price suggests. when you add up: better details, more correct frequencies, slightly better soundstage and seperation. the 6XX is a 40% improvement. I have even thought my pair were fake because as they were used from Ebay, I even got a multimeter to measure their impedance and they were 306ohms, because they were about as hard to drive as my headset. one thing to note, I am using them without an amp, not sure I will get one because some people couldn't even tell a difference.

I like ksc75 + iFi zen (air) dac better than any gaming headset for gaming. Amps do make a difference, but it won’t fix 6xx no matter what amp you use.

@@nyvoreviews5443 not that it needs to be fixed for me, I bought it because my preference is the warm midrange clear vocals and non fatiguing detailed listen. it was all that but not an insane difference, easily noticeable improvement. maybe my expectations were too high lol
