A few notes after watching this excellent comparison. As someone that owns both the Sony's and Sennheiser's myself. The first being that using the equalizer on the Sony's drops the used codec from AAC/LDAC all the way down to SBC. For some reason you can't use anything but the default when using a codec with proper sound quality. You can do this just fine with the EQ on the Sennheiser, even tho that EQ is simpler by design. The second thing is the touch controls on the XM3's being obnoxiously poor if you live in a colder climate. If it's windy and the temp goes below about 5 degrees celcius, you will inevitable get phantom touches. Either your music will skip ahead, or attention mode gets randomly activated. It's extremely annoying (even more so if you're listening to podcasts or audiobooks) if you frequently use these outside in those kind of climates.
@fallinginthed33p4 жыл бұрын
It's because the Sonys apply any EQ settings on all inputs. Don't use LDAC if you use the XM3s for watching movies though, the lag is horrendous. The Sony headphone app is a flaming mess.

A bit pity that I have to do the exchange due to the reason that the Momentum is uncomfortable for me. I just can't have it for many hours. Maybe other people dont have this problem at all. Overall I would recommend the sennheiser for the sound quality if you don't have problem with the comfort. :)

(I own both the momentum's and sonys) By far the sennhieser momentum 3 beats the sonys sound wise... the anc is not as good as the sony but once you have music playing in addition to the great isolation due to the leather pads you won't be hearing anything. @Beattle Maniac - U must b using the wrong codecs on the Sony. I just bought the M3's, and the only thing the have sound wise over the Sony is a little wider soundstage, a bit deeper base. The Sony's when using the proper codecs, and the app are unbelievable ( much tighter bass also). Also, my new Senn's started distorting when I put 70% bass at max volume (my Sony's don't 😌). I'll admit, they do get louder, and I haven't burned them in all the way, but I am returning them today. If all the people commenting owned both models, set the Sony's to the highest bluetooth codecs, proper EQ settings, no way could justify spending $400 for so little.
@kris26945 жыл бұрын
@@bigcdub I will agree in part. There are no drastic differences in sound between these headphones, BUT, in M3 you can give more details, the bass is different, better than the one in Sony. The XM3 also sound very bassy. I tested both models with Galaxy s10 +, Sony with LDAC codec, no changes in EQ. Listening to music on M3 makes more pleasure, the sound is more unpredictable in a positive sense and if we add to this the phenomenal quality of M3 construction, there can be only one result :)
@tepidbudgie5 жыл бұрын
@@bigcdub The thing with the sonys tho when u go in to the equaliser to adjust the audio you lose the function of the upscaling DAC within the headphones losing on imo a great deal of fidelity, so it's pointless to mess around with the eq. Meanwhile the m3s eq is intuitive and capable imo, little tweaks in the simple eq app go a long way.

@@kris2694 The sound signature of the two headphones are subjective to say the least, but if you have both models, then you know you can alter the bass signature in the Sony's drastically... I also have the S10+, and iPhone XSMax. I also listen to hi-rez audio files, with the EQ setting to "club" mode, no additional EQ, ANC OFF. The richness in the quality of the sound favors the Sony's. True, the Senn's have a better build quality, but the Sony's look better, have better ANC, and you can find them for around $200 now. Get your $400 back, keep the Sony's.

I just got the SM3 yesterday. I chose it over XM4 and ANC 700 just because I need something that has good punchy bass while still maintaining good clarity. Some review says that the SM3 got incredible bass that the headphone literally physically vibrates on certain music, that review got me hyped. So I proceeded to buy one. As you can see, I was quite a bass lover (until my soul got purified by the sound of SM3 that is). At first, I was very, very, disappointed by the sound character of SM3. There is little to no bass at all, not remotely close to the expectations. I tried to burn it in for several hours, but no luck. I tried it wired, still sounds just okay-ish. My day was ruined. That is until I decided to listen to some hifi music. In an instant I feel like my soul got purged from evil. I realized I listened to music "the wrong way" all my life. I went from loving bass to avoiding it in matter of minutes. I realized those bassy music I have been listening to all this time are actually terrible. I can finally see, or rather hear, the beauty of hifi and/or audiophile music, even if I'm still just scratching the surface at this point. I'm aware that the SM3 is far from being the best, but I think it's a nice place to start for bass-junkies lover to learn about the true quality of music. Everything about the sound is just so incredible and it still has very nice punchy bass (which according to 1-day-ago-me was very lacking). At this point I know I've only reached the entry gateway to the world of audiophile, but I'm looking forward to explore more! Several things I noticed from the SM3 is that the ANC is very lacking as everyone mentioned, it's nowhere close to my Jabra elite 75t (earbuds), which is not even well-known for its noise cancelling. Also I can feel some pressure when the ANC is turned on and it does amplify the bass quite a lot. In overall, SM3 is really really fun to listen with. But of course you need proper source to enjoy it to the fullest. If you are new to the world of hifi headphone like me, spend some time to do your research before judging the quality at first try, you will not regret it. Personally, the only MASSIVE drawback of having a headphone at this level, is that every other audio devices I own, including the ones I recently bought, they now sound absolutely terrible when compared to the SM3. There is just no going back.

Good review. As other have mentioned with the Sonys you drop out of LDAC if you're EQing, so while you can EQ frequency response, you're losing quality. I tried EQing down the bass on mine but they sounded like hot trash when I did. Also with LDAC what a lot of people don't realise it that you may not be getting the best quality by default (as you might assume) - it selects based on signal conditions (and in some phones seems to never go above the middle quality setting). You can force it into the highest via developer settings, but may have issues with more dropouts. Also AptX Low Latency is on the Senns, but I think neither of the others here, seems to be consistently missed in reviews. I like my Sonys for what they are, and they're the most fit for purpose for travel, but I don't listen to music on them (just video content) and will probably try the Senns for that reason for regular out and about stuff (at home I have little reason to listen to either with the Focal Utopia at hand).

Well, i own both ... the bose bc700 and the momentum 3 and i mist say. The momentum 3 in incomparable to the bose, they both great sound but the momentum 3 wins all the way by the way they sound and also by how comfy they are on your head, everything sounds better there and you can edit the equalizer so you’ll have more focus on the bass or treble or both, never had any headphones thats sound like that and they are AMAZING. How ever i have to say the ANC is not as good as the bose nc700 but its more than enough, the battery life is not an issue since i never finished the battery on both of them, i usually charge it over night and im not listening to music 17 hours or more in a whole day. Never tried the sony but without even trying i can say they will be let down compare to the momentum in terms of sound quality, tey might win on the ANC section but i usually use mine in a quite places like home or at the office. Noise cancellation isn’t an issue between the Sonys and the 700s, they’re both powerful. But in the comfort category (and many others), I give it to the Bose 700. With the Bose 700 i had absolutely no discomfort or warming issue even after hours of wearing them, but with Sony 1000XM3 it takes 5-10 minutes for them to become uncomfortably warm around ears. Also Sony is coming out with the H.ear on 3's soon, so most likely you'll have to wait till next year for the m4's

@@jukijunk The m3's was made to be good especially with all the codecs which sadly other headphones dont have(future proof). Huge thanks for the review. But I disagree with your words about rich Sony's 1000XM3 EQ settings. I have an android phone and I can't use the EQ in the LDAC mode, just in poor sounding SBC mode. And the shame is that almost no one of the reviewers mention it. I wish I knew that before bying, because I bought them and now I feel very dissappointed with Sony's sound signature which I can't change.

@@ATK. if it were, that would suck a lot.
@erickruse46794 жыл бұрын
@@mfbuisman4135 That's a really good thing. Wirelessly, your lossy codec audio files are being reprocessed by the Bluetooth transmitter using another lossy codec (APTX at best), and then re-re-processed by the Bluetooth receiver into analog. By connecting the USB, you get the original sound file delivered to a ESS DAC within the headphone and converted straight to analog, which is superior in every way to the Bluetooth stack. The headphone becomes a good USB soundcard. It's a notable benefit to the sound, charges while you listen, and is an extra cost in the design and production. Too bad Sennheiser doesn't go into the details in their advertising.

I personally think so, I had the Momentum 2's and upgraded to the 3's earlier this week. The ear cuffs feel the same, except on the Momentum 3's you're able to rotate them more ultimately giving a better fit. The band is a little more comfortable than the 2's, it's still thin, but not as much. They also don't have as much clamping force as the 2's so I hardly notice the band at all. Hope this helps!

I own both models (M3's and 1000xm3), use the highest bluetooth codecs, and proper EQ on the Sony's and some will tell u the Sony's actually sound better ( I actually tested this through friends). To me the Senn's have a little wider soundstage, and a bit deeper bass, but the Sony's definitely sound richer. I haven't let the Senn's burn all the way in, but I am returning them, gotta get that $400 back! Read all the comments u want, these headphones are way to close to call. If u already have the Sony's, don't waste your money on the Senn's, if u have the M3's, look no further. Btw, I also own several "wired" pair of headphones that actually destroy these good sounding headphones, like the AuidioTechnica PRO700MK2, Sennheiser HDJ8, and Sony's own MDR1AM2. All with portable headphone amp and dac of course.

@@Gk-jv8gz Honestly, they both aren't bad. The XM3 have a little deeper bass (not punchier, if that even is a word) and clearer highs, but what the h.ear On 2s lose in bass, they make up with a more a warmer sound signature. Overall, I would say the upgrade is worth it, if you like like an overall more rounded sound. It really depends on the Genres you'll putting them to. In the end of the day what most important thing is better sound quality and comfort which Sennheiser Momentum 3 has and even if runs of battery we can still use it as a wired connection. I've used both Sony and Sennheiser brands and always Sennheiser gets the job done while Sony dissappointent at sound quality many times like overwhelming muffled bass and also outdones the vocals. I'd love to have Sony's amazing ANC on Sennheiser but still it has also a great ANC tho.
