I feel like his voice is the tad-ist bit softer and more gentle with Dia. He never misses his monthly visit despite technically being busy living a double life, and it seems gifting her treats and presents is a norm between the two. I've seen people comment that he seems to only be viewing her as an assassination tool or just a pawn because of the whole magic transcription thing... but I just viewed it as romantic? I mean, they both love testing magic and making new spells, and they love feeding off each others ideas for such---I just thought it was a subject they connected on and both enjoyed. I think the anime did a decent job portraying his subtle allowances and care for Dia; I'm anime-only and I could easily pick up on it.

Dia isn't a tool, and technically, she outranks Lugh on the noble hierarchy being the heir to a county, even if she's from the next country over. However, Assassins have Handlers, and the Tuantha De barony technically answers to another family within the Kingdom, both as assassins and feudal nobles. Future seasons, if they do happen would likely flip the question of whether any member of Lugh's harem are tools to him on its head once a certain girl is introduced.

I can't tell if his feelings are genuine or if he just wants Dia as another assistant for his assassination purposes. From the anime-only side, we have: - When she first came and they experimented with magic, he thought that it was surprisingly fun. - When she left, he actively wanted to see her again so he rode a horse to catch up and make the promise to come whenever she wanted him to. - :smirk: Don't tell me that's not something a sappy young boy would say to a girl he doesn't like, even if he doesn't clearly admit it then. - Compare that to when he was leaving to become Illig and said Tarte could stay behind. - Compare that to when he was leaving to become Lugh and said goodbyes to Maha. - At this point you could say that Tarte and Maha are tool-zoned and Dia is not. - We don't get any of the "I'm gonna manipulate you" internal monologue when he's with Dia.

He used emotional and situational manipulation to make Tarte rely on him so he could have her full loyalty. He knew how to make a child imprint on him, and he only knew that because he is an old man. Is it weird? Yes, and that is a fact. Is the show good? Yes, it still is but that doesn't remove the fact that it is still weird. Thankfully this anime is not super sexual except that skinny dipping scene. If the author waited to add the romance element till Lugh is 18 then it would have been kinda not weird.

I think if Dimor Viekone and Esri would be siblings, they would've stated so as it would increase the stakes of Lugh's mission even more, but they didn't.
