@David_Raab Hardening the head is impossible lol. Not harder. Impossible. The brain doesn't get cushioning because you harden the skull, and head trauma is caused by the brain being vulnerable INSIDE of the skull. Not the skull being vulnerable. Even if you did harden your skull, it actually makes it worse because you subject your brain to more trauma in the process of hardening the skull. Strengthing the neck muscles has benefits, but it does not "stop impacts." It only reduces the amount of movement of the head. That has nothing to do with hardening techniques, however. That is just called lifting weights and strength training.

eh i personally find it to be the most overrated grappling art. Sorta like Sensei Seth once said, it's going through a corporate sponsor age similar to how Karate did in the 70's - 90's. Naturally one's ability depends on their skill, dedication, stamina, and strength. But I noticed a low level wrestler is able to dispatch a higher level BJJ practicioner, I guess the JRE bros never got around to that part of the cast.
@jonahwashburn11632 ай бұрын
I feel like most of the influencers addressing this question miss a huge part of the divide between Karate and BJJ these days. Both martial arts claim to be something that in 95% of the world, they truly aren’t anymore. BJJ likes to advertise itself as the master martial art of no holds barred combat; they point to examples like the early UFC days to make this point. But most gyms train nothing like the Gracie’s trained for those fights. Most gyms can see 250+ lbs out of shape purple belts who are mediocre at best at one or two takedowns, and who have never done live rounds defending themselves from striking opponents. We are talking years of martial arts training, never getting punched, and then claiming they could totally handle any pure striker… yea, you’re not that guy bro. Karate on the other hand advertises itself as the complete martial art for self defense; staying on your feet, some throws and some groundwork, some weapons stuff. I’ve personally met 16 year old Blackbelts in karate who admitted they had never taken another martial arts class, but were adamant they not only could protect themselves from a BJJ competitor, but could even give them a hard time in a grappling match. I actually had an experience where I was interviewing at a karate school (long story) to help teach their once a week 30 minute grappling class (I was a blue belt in BJJ getting ready to test for purple), and I had to show their team of 18-22 year old coaches how to load someone for a hip throw. These guys told me they had over 10 years of karate under their belts, and assured me they were competent grapplers, but had never even tried loading someone for a hip throw. (The interview experience was wild and lasted about a month and a half before I finally just told them I was no longer interested in the position, it’s a long story but I’ll share if people want.) My point is, very few BJJ schools seriously teach throws or strikes, and very few karate schools actually teach anything other than pure striking. Rather than comparing one martial art to another to see which is better, a far better mental attitude is cross training. Rather than looking at BJJ as a complete self defense system, it’s better to look at it as ground fighting only. That’s a far more honest assessment of what BJJ is today, and the same is true for Karate, but for striking. Individual martial arts today are more about specialization, not generalization. If you want to learn to fight, you are highly unlikely today to learn how by attending only BJJ, only Karate, only Boxing, only Judo, Etc. get out and cross train, it’s better than keyboard warrior-ing.
@Dodgerzden2 ай бұрын
It's always been that way as far as I know. I did Judo in the 70s and Karate in the 80s and I never heard any grappling style teaching strikes and I never heard of any striking style teaching grappling. But there were a couple of isolated schools teaching a sort of hybrid style that incorporated a hodge-podge of techniques but they never did any serious kind of sparring. But it's worthy to note that the original Japanese Jiu-Jitsu is a system that incorporates every kind of technique imaginable and Judo, BJJ and many karate styles such as Shotokan gleaned their techniques from Japanese Jiu-Jitsu to form specialties. Very much like all Korean styles such as Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do and Hapkido became specialties by gleaning their techniques from Hwarang-Do, which also is comprised of every kind of technique under the sun.
@taylorhillard48682 ай бұрын
As someone who has done martial arts since I was a child and practiced in many various disciplines it all comes down to this; do not get into a fight unless your life depends on it, and if your life does depend on it, fight like it. Modern martial arts is a sport, not self defense. The original martial arts use techniques that are universally banned from all modern sports because they are too dangerous. If everyone was out here using the full extent and power of what thier martial art originally contained, you would have a bunch of blind, deaf, and deformed martial artists, even excluding all of the ones who just simply died. The human body is incredibly fragile, even if you train it to its full potential. No one who is actually proficient in martial arts ever wants to be in a real fight, because they know exactly what is at stake.

Michael Jai Whites talked about how they fixed BJJ to win in the early UFC to promote the fighting style. It worked since BJJ exploded and the Garcies made a ton of money from it. The only true best representive of martial artists of their fighting style were the BJJ fighters in the early UFC and the rest of the other arts were amateur fighters at best. If you took a Karate champion who had full contact competitions like Dolph Lundgren or Chuck Norris or a Muay Thai vs an amateur BJJ, the Karate or Muay Thai will win. Dolph almost ended Stallion in Rocky 4 by punching him in the chest. Stallion went to the hospital with a swollen heart. Karate was legit as it came. Today's MMA is a better representation of fighting art vs fighting art. Karate is way more legitimate and BJJ isnt as dominate as it seemed in the early UFC.

I don't consider myself the most gifted brown belt in the world, but where I train we try to instill common sense for self-defence. Variations from that jujutsu school or that Japanese budo in general, but they're good at them no lie. And when you mention the short karate gis, it feels crazy today, but old judo gis were short sleeved like that. In those old videos they really have disturbingly short sleeves which must've been quite an annoyance. Before they decided that the gi should have certain measures in sport. Maybe one of those side kicks if caught properly could land you a good kibisu gaeshi or even kuchiki taoshi. But it looks so tough to get that grip against a karateka. The discussion about creating content is very descriptive of what you tend to see these days, not by all, but from quite a few channels. Having a bit irritating title, maybe in the form of question or statement, but as you watch the video they give credit to the topic and discuss it in a rather holistic and honest way. I do see way too many "is bjj/judo better" or "judo vs bjj fight" and I hate the idea when they have so much in common and can greatly benefit from each other. But many times the content of the video is a couple of grapplers having good time sparring with each other and learning different advantages and disadvantages. And often time with good humour and self-awareness like these guys in the video. The comment section in some of those videos though... Although I remember a good comment where someone pointed out how Travis Stevens, the US olympic medalist in judo, said that he too will guard pull in bjj because it's an effective strategy to win in bjj. How you adapt to the restrictions in place of any sport's rules. KZbin's been trying to serve me Jesse's content for a good while and I've been so close, I've got the image that he's worthwhile to listen to, but it just hasn't been the time yet, hasn't been exactly the interest I have on his videos, but maybe soon.

The quick and easy answer to this is Karate fails to things that happen on the street like being rushed or fighting in ways not familiar to Karate. People who train Karate train to fight other Karate fighters. Just to make it fair, BJJ's weakness is standing strikes and Longer Range fighting like kicks. BJJ will rule over Karate since you can't kick someone who closes distance but pride blinds them so they hear Range beats BJJ and they train to fight long so they should win in that fight. This is why when training it's important to learn all round fighting like kick boxing and muy thai. I took a bunch of classes in BJJ so I could defend against it. I also trained 6 years in Taekwondo (Which I regret since 85% of what I learned is useless) then started training Muy Thai which I love
