What a classic this model of Cortina is. I have no doubt that many of those who watch this terrific review will have fond memories of the vehicle, either because it was the family car, or a relative owned one or a friend’s parents drove one. For a number of school friends it was the car that their parents took them out in to get driving experience before they took their tests. Such a great trip down memory lane, thank you, sir!

It just summons up an era which is very nostalgic for many of us. These Cortinas were so much a part of the fabric of life that people didn't really take any notice of them at all at the time, and now they are all gone, we look upon them with a certain fondness, don't we? Certainly, Michael's parents used to have one from what I understand...

Beautiful colour, in Good condition, sets the car off! Just as old film stars can still look good, so does this car! But the film stars have often had FACELIFTS, and this car hasn't had the equivalent - a renovation!

A great review of a great car. I ordered a 1.6L with the S pack in Signal Red 80 in September 1979. On the 1.6, the S pack also included the twin choke Weber carb, so no VV carb issues. Passenger door mirror and clock were also extras. It was almost a 1.6 Ghia only not quite so 'plush' . Today, 2nd Jan is actually 44 years to the day that I collected the car from Candor Motors in Braintree Essex. Car cost me £4568 and was reg number MVW 838V. Owned it until September 1986 when it was involved in a silly low speed accident. Unfortunately it was hit just behind the front nearside wheel which moved the A pillar slightly and put a tiny crease in the roof. Insurance company wrote it off, but a friend said it was repairable. Tried to buy it back, but insurance said no and said it would be broken for spares. Saw it a couple of months later parked in a local town. Not happy!!!!! Would probably still have had it today if I could have bought it.

Yes, the S pack was a bit different depending on the model year. The list I used was from the 1982 S pack. That is a shame that they wrote off the Cortina you had, it sounds like an extremely early one! I don't think that they were available to the public on a T plate (although there were some press cars with that letter), so yours on a V plate would have been one of the first Cortina 80s sold through a dealership. As you say, much better to have the Weber carburettor on one of these!

I remember driving several of these back in the day, including the 2.3 V6 which you mentioned. They were OK and reliable although basic compared to new car now. As you say, they were popular with the public, especially in Essex which was very much regarded as 'Ford Country' at the time.

Still great looking cars , Ford knew exactly what we wanted in the 70’s and 80’s . I had a 1.6 ghia with the most powerful engine, could easily keep up with my mates 2ltr , top spec but still keep fit windows and steering ! Sadly every time it rained the footwells filled with water, so got replaced with a mk2 Cavalier 1.6 gls which was a brilliant car .
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 9 ай бұрын
Yes, Ford were masters of marketing and differentiating between all the different engines and trim levels. The 1.6 Ghias are not that common, but they did make them. The Mark II Cavalier is a much better car than one of these, but Mark III-V Cortinas are still brilliant in their own way.
@nygelmiller5293
@nygelmiller5293 7 ай бұрын
To Richard Howlett - the water in the footwells could be due to the same thing I had in my Fiat 128! The air intakes below the windscreen were like a sink - having a plughole to let water out, from the rain. If these blocked from leaves or anything - the water went elsewhere (The footwells). So I had to poke these drain holes clear from time to time!

@@richardhowlett7398 hello! Thanks for replying! No, actually my Fiat wasn't old enough to have RUST , but a receptionist at my local Fiat garage told me that was why HER Fiat ALSO got water on the interior floor. The grilles for ventilation under the windscreen did indeed have a "plughole" to let rainwater out, into the bonnet to run out on to the ground. If autumn leaves collected on your parked car, and crumbled, and eventually went these vents, the drain holes COULD indeed get blocked. Hopefully Fiat, and possibly Ford, have changed things since! Incidentally, until the 90's (This was the 80's), continental cars had rubber flooring instead of carpets that were popular over here. Under such wet circumstances, a good thing!

I'm from NZ and my father very nearly purchased a 2.3 litre '82 one of these back in '86. Instead he opted for the Ford Telstar TX5 ('83 model which was one of the earliest versions). My aunt had a 2 litre '82 model auto in this colour that I borrowed once as a teen and used it to tear up a large grass field as a teen. @@lloydvehicleconsulting The shape stood the test of time. It was inevitable that they would go the way of the Sierra sooner or later but for me that shape was just right, lights in the right place, ride height about right etc. Btw, ditching the Onslow jokes and bringing up more serious information, the Mark 5 was not assembled or sold in Australia because its predecessor model was not as popular as hoped over there - even when they put the Falcon 6 in it (Which upset the handling!). Exactly why, I do not know but extensive market competition from Japanese cars and apathy from Ford may have been factors.

I had a 1980 1.6L estate as my first car at 18 in 1988. Loved it although it was quite rusty underneath by all accounts - I was in a terrible band at the time and it used to take all our gear easily . I remember it had the hazard warning flasher button underneath the dash strangely, and on one occasion that failed which meant I couldn’t switch off the hazards ! Like everything else in it though , it was an easy fix. I learned to do oil changes on this car - and it often received a fresh load of 20w50 . I then sold it to a mate who used it until he crashed it and wrote it off. Happy days….. MLU 76V you are still remembered..

I had a Mk4 Cortina 1.6GL Estate in metallic Apollo Green with a black vinyl roof. I was serving with the RAF in Germany at the time and bought it brand new. When it was 13 months old I was involved in a crash with a German civilian worker who was driving a Transit (and had been drinking), on the base. The car was taken by the Ford Dealer in Mönchengladbach (who I'd bought it through) to be repaired. When I got it back, the dealer had replaced the damaged front valance with one that was fitted to the Mk5 - with the four slits - for some reason. When the Cortina was in its dying throes with the Sierra on the horizon, Ford introduced the Cortina Crusader as a way of emptying the Cortina "parts bin," you could buy a new Crusader that was specced higher than a Cortina GL for a lower list price.

Great to see you review one of these Joseph, I learned to drive in a MKV that belonged to my grandad, a dealer special edition, called a blackbird, I’ve never seen one ever again! By the end of production I know they weren’t class competitive or the most dynamic of cars, but they did have a great gear change I recall and for a learner that was important to me. I guess many were chosen as customers were reassured by the Ford badge.

Never heard of that particular special edition, sir, but I am sure that it was one of many dealership only models. They were still very similar to the Mark III underneath in 1982, but it seems that the core buyer demographic did not really care, as some of them went onto buy the extremely mechanically similar Hyundai Stellar!

I think it’s difficult for us to appreciate 42 years on just how radical and off putting the Sierra was at launch in 1982. I would be fairly sure a number of company sales reps would’ve been happy to be offered a runout specced-up Cortina as opposed to an entry level Sierra and the fleet managers would have been far happier with them as well. I don't think that I did miss anything, necessarily. I did mention the fact that they were popular with sales representatives. It goes back to the fact that when I was younger, these were everywhere, and by around 1987-8 when I was first really aware of the makes and models of cars, these would have ceased to be in the hands of company car drivers, and instead have been bought as secondhand cars in massive numbers by families. A lot of the comments seem to bear this out. I remember the Sierras and Cavalier Mark IIIs being company cars, but that was a bit later.

I was interested to compare this to my father's W-plate Cortina 1.6GL from late 1980. The interior of that later model is certainly plusher (velour seats, proper headrests instead of A-frame headrests). It has the same Ford P21 push-button radio, though! Thanks for that interesting review, sir 👍

Yes, as a lot of people seem to be pointing out, there seem to be a few extra features on this late Cortina 1.6 GL than the earlier Mark Vs of the same trim level. It is amazing that this still retains the original radio!

What a lovely example, Mr Lloyd. A paint job on the back would be well worth while. Sadly it was replaced by the "Jelly Mould" designed Sierra which I could not take too. The 4 speed gearbox was known as the type E box fitted to many of the pinto engined Fords, I think it was the best Ford ever made. The VV carb was a disaster from new, my father had one on his new Escort which was a Mk3 1300 Ghia. The auto choke played up from the start and it was unfixable. Afterwards there was a kit made available to switch the problematic choke off. There was also a Weber replacement carb made available for the Escort and quite possibly for the Cortina too. I bought a kit for my fathers car which made it drivable. If I owned this Cortina I would probably try to find an earlier Ford carb off a Pinto 1600 engine and original air filter to fit it, I might even consider a Weber carb off the 1600 GT pinto engine.

My goodness me, I didn't even get to the end of the first road after picking this up before realising that there was something up with the way it was running! If it had been me, that caburettor would have gone in the bin before the end of the journey, but it was sold soon after I filmed it, with it still on the car, so it doesn't really matter. As you say, the Weber is the most common solution to the issue these days. Thank you for watching, sir!

Lovely low mileage Cortina. They were never equipped to Japanese car standards unless you bought a Ghia or a Crusader. The 2.0 litre S was the police car of choice . But reliable and comfortable for mile after mile and peanuts to service. Our Local Station BBC Radio Foyle ran a white Mk 5 estate with a huge roof antenna well into the 1990s.

Another very nostalgic trip down memory lane. After a succession of BMC cars in the 1960's, my Father had no less than 6 Cortinas between 1970 and 1982, a Mk 2, 2 Mk 3, 2 Mk 4 and a Mk 5. All hard used work horses, the earlier ones rusting heavily after 2 to 3 years! The term "used car" was very appropriate then! The tax rules also had a big influence, with benefit in kind bands at 1300cc, 1600cc and 2000cc, a key reason perhaps why the 2.0 outsold the 2.3. This was a period when these tax rules started to bite harder, as they applied to so called Higher Paid Employees earning over £8500, that level remaining unchanged so that during the high inflation 70's more and more people fell within those tax rules. Hope that is suitably boring knowledge!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 7 ай бұрын
Goodness me, that is an awful lot of Cortinas! By no means unusual either, we loved these over here, didn't we? That is absolutely right, company car tax bands were an important reason for the various engine sizes of cars like the Cavalier and the Cortina, which were probably the most popular ones as company cars back in the day.

I remember these well. They were very popular in New Zealand, in fact, they were the number 1 bestseller for a long while. We had about equal numbers of 2.0 and 1.6s our 1.6s were all lower spec than this car. I have driven all the engines, from the 1.3 to the 2.3 Ghia. The 1.3 were totally hopeless and actually did the brand harm in New Zealand so they dropped them before the MK IV. The 1.6 was kind of OK but lacked punch at higher speeds, the 2.0 was considered a rapid car which I always considered a benchmark for performance. In my opinion, the 2.0 was the best for the New Zealand roads of the time. The 2.3 was faster at higher illegal speeds (New Zealand had a 50mph speed limit during the reign of the Cortina) however it was less nimble. None of the models were particularly good on fuel All the 1.6 Cortinas my friends had had manual chokes, either a replacement carburettor or an after-market adaption. Cortinas were never reliable cars, however they were easy to fix and keep going so there were still loads of them driving around into the 21st century. Rust was a serious problem if ignored.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 7 ай бұрын
Yes, the first thing that I would do if this car were mine would be to get a Weber carburettor for it. I am not surprised this was also popular in New Zealand, as they were phenomenally successful over here, even by this stage. The 1.3 Cortinas were undoubtedly there to get someone into a Ford dealership, tempted by the low price, and probably be upsold to a 1.6 version. I would prefer the 2.3 Ghia, personally. Rust killed so many of these off, and so many similar cars of the era too, I imagine.
