I,m still driving my 60,000 mile V6 manual and able to out handle and out drag many many other cars on the road. This car is so underrated, owners tend to love and keep them for MANY years, like me. They are worth buying and maintaining over most modern clutch-less cars IMO. You will park it and look back as you walk away, all owners do that. My 2003 V6 is also ULEZ compliant (London UK road toll/tax). Beat that! :) AND... If you add the 18" alloys from the later model, they handle, stop and drive far far better than on the standard 16" alloys with tall sidewalls. I have done this and am amazed at the improvement after years of owning it, and driving it sparingly. Enjoy.

This is one of the seminal episodes of Sensible Secondhand Classics. An absolutely amazing car, probably the only weak point is the design of the dashboard, but if you like the one in the normal 406, then that isn't much of a problem. Thanks for this great review. I've had a silver 2002 V6 for some years now and there's no way I'm getting rid of it. It's a joy to drive, even around town. My only gripe is that it's a little too "civilised" and I have to really rev it up to get a satisfying grunt! SOmetimes it's even better to stand outside and look at the amazing timeless Italian styling.
@lloydvehicleconsulting3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a very nice sounding engine. Not sure if this or the V6 Saloon I tested last year had a better exhaust note, but I enjoyed both. The styling is indeed absolutely lovely, it is a shame that this type of car is very rare now on the new market, but I suppose it does mean that prices will continue to rise for these 406 Coupés.

Great review. Sadly the late V6 cars are getting hard to find in good condition. The 2.2 petrol is a pretty good compromise not quite as quick or good sounding but 80-100kg lighter so the handling is better. The coloured (you could get red or blue too) leather makes a huge difference to the ambience as the 'standard' black leather + grey roof lining is pretty boring.

Thank you ever so much indeed for watching and commenting! Yes, I imagine the 2.2s would be a good compromise, but having driven a V6 saloon last year, I would miss the V6 noise if I had a four cylinder one of these. Little information updates on the video. The coupe was in production until 2005 and the gen 1 version had the 194 bhp V6 engine, which is more "nervy"/revvy than the 210 bhp engine, which is more linear... The ES9J4 engine (194 bhp) is also more reliable than the latter version. I have owned a coupe since 2005 and a V6 since 2007, and it's still an absolute joy to drive... So much so that i prefer it to my z4 3.0 and my 997 c2s! Once a coupe owner, you pretty much never stop looking back at it as you park it... And this stays with you forever. They are that sexy... Mine is slightly modified (not the chavvy way 🤣) and it's improve further still the handling, braking, acceleration etc... Currently doing a brakes overall, because the car is from 1998 so things start to age badly there, but parts are still relatively cheap (compared to a Porsche anyway 🤣🥴)... I've spent a lot of money on it over the years, but not much at all in the past 13 years actually, so i am now starting to replace all sorts of parts (boot struts, bonnet struts, console bulbs, rear calipers, etc... and i think i am going to start looking after her a lot more again because she deserves it! We didn't get the final year facelifted cars in this country, so production for the UK finished in 2004. I have also driven two 406 V6 Saloons with a manual gearbox, one pre-facelift and one post-facelift, both with the 194 bhp engine, and they were both excellent.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting yes that's right, no facelift for us in the UK but we still got 04 plates, albeit rare. Personally, having driven the 194 bhp and the 210 bhp, I much prefer the earlier engine. It's just revvier (and with a closed air induction kit it really does free up the air flow and enables the engine to rev much quicker - it really is quite noticeable). The latter engine is more linear... It doesn't mean it's bad, it's just a different feel and each to their own really.

Yes, I don't think that we can sell her, but one of these is now seriously tempting. Justin mentioned the facelifted cars, as you say, we never got those over here, of course. Solid Red would actually be fine, although dark green or dark blue metallic with a beige leather interior is clearly better as far as I am concerned.

Yes, if it was an S, it would have been one of the first! Was it a 2.0 or a 3.0?

@@lloydvehicleconsulting 3.0 litre. I had the 406 badge taken off and people used to ask what it was as it looked so exotic.

@@fasthracing , if didn't have the leather interior, it would have just been the V6 base model with no trim designation from what I understand. Yes, very exotic looking!

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yep it was the V6 3.0 base model.
