Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time, we test a 2011 Mazda2 1.3 Tamura (also known in some markets as the Demio), which is based on one of the perennial favourites of this channel, the Ford Fiesta. Be prepared for a slightly interesting exterior colour, rather a lovely gearchange, mysterious chassis codes, unexpected hat wearing, parking on a closed road and very little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then!

Thank you ever so much indeed! Yes, I like to make sure that I try to give as neutral an opinion as possible with Sensible Secondhand Reviews. Need to watch for rust on the older ones, but on this low mileage, clearly cared for example, it wasn't a problem. They do drive very nicely indeed.

Aha a Mazda 2 in Green. I'm now singing the LV insurance tune to myself :) I remember having a shot of a brand new one back in 2012. I remember it riding quite hard and needing a bit of a shove to change gear but it did handle really well. Shame the rust gets them as, other than that, Mazda build a cracking car. This one looks very tidy though. Good to see you looking well and cheery post-op as well sir

I think the later ones tend to be a bit less prone to rust as they are much newer, but I have had heard a few stories of Mazdas from the 2000s in terms of rust, and they aren't necessarily complimentary, sadly. The ride is a bit firm, and you do need keep a good grip on the gearlever when you change, but these tend to be sports car attributes, so not necessarily a bad thing. This one is in generally excellent condition, a good deal of fun as well!

I remember these being released and bucking the trend being smaller than its predecessor. Based on the upcoming fiesta the motoring press of the time raved about these little cars with high praise for its handling.

Yes, very good steering and handling, ride is a little firm, but it is better on cars like these, which are post facelift with the standard suspension. The first generation Mazda2 was more like a Fusion than a Fiesta, if that makes sense.

Great looking little Mazda, my sister in law had one of these in this shade of green up until a couple of years ago, around the same time has my dad had a mark 7 fiesta and always thought they were quite similar styled from the side, so it makes sense now to learn the platform is shared. Of the two cars if I had to choose it woukd be the Mazda. Stalks remind me off later Nissan like my old Qashqai and K12 micras, chunky and useable.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, similar to a Mark VII Fiesta in all the best ways, and the proportions are probably quite similar. I think that the Fiesta is a superb car, but I also prefer the Mazda, especially as they are a bit rarer.

I really rate these as I ran two 1.5 Sports back to back in 2010/2011 (pre and post facelift) as they were the smallest thing I could park near my apartment in Cologne. I loved the fantastic handling and steering but to be fair the interior let it down a little. The first car had lowered suspension (only realised this when I got the second car) and that made a big difference without ruining the handling. I even managed a few longer runs up to Hamburg etc. The diesel weren’t worth the effort to be honest…
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
I think that I would prefer the standard suspension to the lowered setup as well, sir! Did your Sports have cruise control, by the way? Indeed, sir, it was the terrible old DLD 414/416 engine, one of the reasons why we certainly do not talk about diesels on this channel!
@Lot76CARS
@Lot76CARS 2 жыл бұрын
@@lloydvehicleconsulting yes, I think cruise control and despite being cloth, the seats were heated. The first car I had was, I think, and ex Motorshow/display car as it had the lowered suspension and a double din aftermarket stereo. Was only when I pitched it’s replacement into a tight bend did I realise it had a bit more lean and suspension travel, although it was by no means bad.

Very fetching hat I like it Sir. As I enjoyed this Mazda 2. I have been a rear passenger in a black one and found it very comfortable and insulated. As you say these moulded plastic door cards are quite normal in this class and the one below, they are very tough and long lasting. You did seem to enjoy the drive Sir. A very different Mazda to the RX8 but very obviously from the same family. Very attractive body and lines.

Yes sir, we did enjoy this one, and actually getting to do a job to my client's satisfaction was also very rewarding. The door cards are not necessarily my favourite, but definitely typical of the class. These do drive very, very nicely. You are right, the RX-8 was still on sale at the time.

The green paintwork really suits that particular car. It makes a change to see a bright colour in a sea of silver,, black, grey or white cars. Mazda models around this age were all quite stylish compared to some of their competitors. I hope your client enjoys her new car.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, silver is getting rarer now, actually. White, black and grey are by far the most popular colours. This sort of green is typical of bright car colours from ten years ago, and it certainly stands out. Mazdas still are generally quite stylish, although there are also some ugly ones now. She seems to love it, which is the most important thing.

I had a TS2 in green and a venture in blue. Loved them to bits! So nippy and fun to drive, a joy to own and very well built and designed. Currently drive a mk7 fiesta st which is fantastic but lately I have been getting nostalgic for the green mazda2 for some reason. I think if more people had actually driven these to try them out, there'd be more converts. I don't like the next gen as much though they're obviously well designed cars again. The older ones are a great no frills fun and reliable supermini that goes really well and punches above its weight as a sporty vehicle.

Yes, a fantastic car! The main problem with these seems to be rust, which afflicts a lot of Mazdas from this era, sadly. Would certainly recommend these if they aren't rusty. Amazing chassis shared with the contemporary Ford Fiesta, the newer ones are not on the same platform, but they do still have the famously reliable Mazda engineering. Got hundreds and hundreds of reviews on the channel now if you would like to see more (without the hat)...

I always thought that the Mazda 2 shared its platform with the Toyota Yaris. I do know Ford had controlling interest in Mazda for decades and shared platforms like the MX-6 and others. WE NEVER FOR FORBIDDEN FUEL VEHICLES FROM MAZDA. Nicely equipped, handsome, very capable, a win-win! I also thought the Mazda 2 came with a 3 cylinder engine. I think the Yaris did, but I could be mistaken. I hope your surgery was successful and that you recover quickly. Thank you very much for the excellent review!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
The Mazda2 has a long history, dating back to 2002. The current generation Mazda2 was sold as a Scion and then a Toyota for a few years. The next generation car, based on the current Toyota Yaris Hybrid, will be sold alongside the current Mazda2 as the Mazda2 Hybrid. That does have a three cylinder engine, but is the Mazda2 to do so for 20 years. The forbidden fuel engine in this Mazda2 was co-developed by Ford and Peugeot Citroen and is known as the DLD-416/414 or DV4/DV6 engine. It has been used in a huge number of different cars, but is really not very good at all. Thank you for watching, sir!

Back in 2013/2014 I was contemplating getting a Mazda2 to replace my forbidden fuel powered Nissan Almera N16. A 1.5 Sport would have been perfect. I think that idea faded away because I'd have take out a loan to buy one and I hate borrowing money so I just kept the Almera for 7 or 8 more years! I did reconsider the newer generation 2 last year when I finally changed cars but nothing came up within budget. I really liked the Mazda2 because it seems so different to what the other marques were making. Built exclusively in Japan (I'm a little suspicious of those French built Yarises and Hungarian built Swifts! ) and the engineering behind it. Joseph mentioned the weight savings accomplished with this, as per the MX-5 NC over the NB. I think around 10 kg was saved from the wiring looms alone on the 2.

Yes, I very much enjoyed this car, which feels very light on its feet instead. As I mentioned in the episode, they were built in other parts of the world apart from Japan, but not for our market. Very different feeling to drive from a forbidden fuel Almera, I imagine! The current generation Mazda2 does have some very strong residual values, especially at the moment, of course.

Yes, Mazda still make excellent cars, although the styling of them is a bit more variable these days with some standouts and others which are not so stylish. At the time, I think all of their range were quite handsome, though. The colour does seem to suit this, I think.

I think compared with quite a lot of cars of the time, the interior plastics were absolutely fine, but they aren't really Audi quality. I suppose the comfort depends from person to person, which is why I always insist that clients take a test drive first! The suspension in this would have been more comfortable than the Sport, should probably try one of those to see how different they are. Thank you for watching!

Mind you, those are still really good cars, I sourced one for a client last year, and she was also ecstatically happy for it. I would like to try a 1.5, actually, due to the higher level of equipment. I seem to recall that you could get the post-facelift Mazdas with the 1.5 engine and standard suspension. That could be the ideal specification for someone like me.
