Sensory clarity is one of the three components of mindfulness meditation, along with concentration and equanimity. Shinzen talks about how the Buddha is the first person we know of historically to break down the sense of self into it's elements as a path to liberation. Shinzen talks about the original "Divide and Conquer" of the word "analysis", and the Western world's use of analysis for an understanding of our natural world and the conquering of the external world. Shinzen contrasts this with the Buddha's conquering of the inner limited identity.
