Wait until you read the sermons on heaven and hell,the vision and description of hell, that dastardly place,will make you trmble,if you gain everything in life and loss your soul,you've lost everything, the sermons are profoundly straightforward and clear,it changed my life,the other book by him is preparation for death,chapter a day on this book is vital.

Excellent to know. I will read them, as soon as I can purchase. Thanks. The sermons/writings of St. Robert Bellarmine are also very instructive and impact-ful along these same lines. Also, the visions of Hell that were given to St. Catherine of Sienna are unspeakably frightening, as she describes four separate and distinct sufferings of Hell, but of course one will experience them simultaneously with who knows what other additional and unthinkable horrors. We all have heard various testimonies of individuals who were at death's door and glimpsed Hell and were certain of being sent there but for a second chance at life and repentance, by whatever divine grace enabled such a blessing. I love St Alphonsus. He has been like a father and mentor to me. His book The True Spouse of Jesus Christ enlightened me before I joined the Dominicans and during my time there. On 1 August (his transferred feast for the Franciscans and his feast on the new calendar), I received the news that I was accepted into a new congregation. I prayed much to him to get my father's approval too for my vocation as the saint had troubles too with his family. Please continue to intercede for me and for our priests today!

I have been reading St. Alphonsus' Preparation for Death. I cannot recommend it enough I would also encourage young men discerning the priesthood to look into the Transalpine Redemptorists. They are now in full communion with Rome and are a traditional group of Redemptorists who say the TLM.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori CSsR (1696-1787), sometimes called Alphonsus Maria Liguori, was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and theologian. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists). In 1762, he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti. A prolific writer, he published nine editions of his Moral Theology in his lifetime, in addition to other devotional and ascetic works and letters. Among his best known works are The Glories of Mary and The Way of the Cross, the latter still used in parishes during Lenten devotions. He was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. One of the most widely read Catholic authors, he is the patron saint of confessors.

In the real calendar, it's the 2nd day of August. In the Novus Ordo calendar, it's the 1st of August. They could have as well added Eymard and Eusebius to the 1st day, but I think that they either wanted to create an incompatibility on purpose or to get rid of the Holy Maccabean martyrs. Who fought against Antiochus Epimanes. And I presume, seriously, that these authors of the new calendar would rather root for Antiochus than the Maccabeans.
