Matt, I have been doing SEO for 21 years and came across this video on internal linking. This has been the best example I have seen on internal linking and silo pages. I've been doing SEO for 10 years, and it took a while to learn the best practices governing silo structures and interlinking in general. Your video is by far the best summary on the concept that I've ever seen, and an excellent educational resource for someone who is transitioning from an entry position to a more serious SEO role. Short, concise, and to the point, with excellent examples to illustrate the underpinning theory. Thank you!

00:00 📚 An SEO silo is a standardized structure of a website where certain pages link to each other based on relevance and thoughtful patterns. - Topical relevance can be achieved by linking related pages, which helps Google understand the website's focus and improves rankings. - Internal linking spreads link juice from high-authority pages to other pages on the site, increasing their rankings. - Well-structured silos can make it easier to rank for long-tail keywords without external link building. 02:21 📚 Foundational keyword research is crucial for organizing website pages in an SEO silo structure. - Main keywords should be broken down into subtopics, which can be further divided into more specific categories. - Higher-level keywords are often more commercial and challenging to rank for, while lower-level keywords are typically easier and more informational. - Categorizing pages based on targeted keywords supports a well-organized and focused website structure. 03:49 📚 Contextual linking is essential for effective SEO siloing, using links within the body of the article or page. - Contextual links are more impactful than links in sidebars, navigation bars, or footers. - One configuration example is the "top-down recycle SEO silo," where contextual links flow from the top page to subpages and back to the top page, completing the linking loop. - This configuration allows link juice to distribute across pages, increasing their rankings and topical relevance. 05:47 📚 The "reverse silo" configuration is one of the most popular SEO silo structures. - The top page links to subpages, while the subpages also link back to the top page, creating a reciprocal linking pattern. - This configuration helps guide users from long-tail keyword pages to more general and commercial intent pages. - The reverse silo offers better topical relevance and allows for easier navigation through the website's content. 07:13 💡 Reverse Silo Configuration - Link juice flows from the top page to subpages and back to the top page. - Increases topical relevance and helps guide users from long-tail keyword pages to more general and commercial intent pages. 08:13 💡 Serial Silo Configuration - Links flow in a sequential manner, with each page linking to the page below it and back to the top page. - Offers limited topical relevance and not recommended for establishing strong link connections. 09:42 💡 Yellow Silo Configuration - Every page links to every other page on the website, resulting in non-topical relevance and an equilibrium spread of link juice. - Lacks strategic advantage and differentiation between pages. 11:37 💡 Priority Silo Configuration - Combines the foundation of the reverse silo with manually interlinking relevant priority pages. - Provides excellent topical relevance, prioritizes important pages for ranking and monetization. 13:31 💡 Recommended Configurations - For beginners: Reverse Silo Configuration offers simplicity, good link juice flow, and decent topical relevance. - For advanced SEOs: Priority Silo Configuration excels in topical relevance and link juice flow, but requires more management. 14:01 💡 Difference between Hard and Soft Silos - Soft silos are built through interlinking pages within a website. - Hard silos are built based on directory structures. 14:28 🏗️ Siloing and Directory Structures - Interlinking is necessary for hard siloing to establish link juice flow and topical relevance. - Directory structures help users navigate different sections of the website. 15:27 ⚓ Anchor Text Diversity - Using varied target anchor texts for internal links produces the best result for SEO. - Diversifying anchor texts helps avoid over-optimization and potential penalties. 16:24 🤝 Relevance of Linked Pages - For new sites, it is crucial to maintain strong relevance between linked pages. - Established authority sites have more flexibility in linking to less relevant pages. 17:21 🏠 Importance of Homepage Link - The homepage is the most important page to link from due to its relevance and high link juice. - Linking from the homepage should prioritize the most important pages on the website. 17:50 ⚠ Pitfalls to Avoid - Over-optimizing by sending exact match anchor texts repeatedly can harm rankings. - Not closing the loop and having dead-end pages restrict link juice flow and topical relevance. 18:47 👥 Main Goals of Interlinking - Link to relevant pages, prioritize pages for ranking, and give extra emphasis to important pages. - Stick to these three concepts for effective interlinking strategies.

Really well explained, thanks Matt! I have a question about silos and sitewide links - how do you approach that? I mean links from menu / sidebar / maybe footer. Let's say silo looks like this: Best Cars - > Best Mercedes Cars - > Mercedes AMG GT Review If I want to focus on Mercedes AMG GT Review page (because it has a lot of volume and rather small competition) should I add it to the main manu or sidebar or footer? Or it will make silo weaker and less effective?

Matt Do you explain in the lab version HOW you should link there and back between a post and another article. It is alright saying it with an arrow pointing to either end. However, I can see how you link one way by adding that to the post in your link with the keywords. How are you linking back? Simply by adding a context link somewhere from your other article. Could this not lead your money article to have hundreds of links in and out? Do you have a video on the priority concept as an arrow does not show how you are linking.
