I did look it up to confirm because I had thought this was the case... but doggie bags were created because, the thought was, that people would take their food home from restaurants and feed it to their dogs. I'm not sure this happens AS often as it used to. It seemed like it was something that evolved during the world wars in the U.S. so there was some food scarcity. But sorta interesting history. Also, I LOVE cilantro and love to have it in a lot of different dishes (Mexican, Thai and Chinese food) but I heard that they have connected the "soup" taste to genetics. If you have a parent that has that tastebud that only tastes cilantro as soap then you will probably will too haha.

I love Coriander/Cilantro, especially as garnish for tom yam soups (Thai cuisine), curries (Indian) and salsa Mexicana/Pico de Gallo for quesadillas, sopes, burritos, tacos (Mexican)😋. Although I do understand how some people can't stand its 'earthiness'. Also, in Thailand, the root of the coriander is used whereby the roots are washed thoroughly, and pounded with garlic and salt into a paste (using a pestle and mortar) as a base for their curries and soups.

I love cilantro! And I’ve heard that it registers as soap for a lot of people. I wonder about that with other foods too. For example I HATE celery. I think it has a very intense offensive flavor but everyone tells me it doesn’t taste like anything. It always baffles me because i think it’s so strong! Haha. Thanks again for another great video! I always look forward to Sunday mornings!

Agreed. I think celery is disgusting. It definitely has a flavor and that flavor is gross. Why would they use it as an umami in recipes if it had no flavor?
@ellomgbofu1174

I feel that way about Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli, and Lima beans. Offensive is the exact word. But I heard it has to do with genetics and certain chemicals in our body that respond that way.

maybe plant your own cilantro plant. If you find whole coriander seeds in a seasoning section, you can try planting it. Once you grow some, if you let it mature until the flowers turn into seeds, you can dry them & start the process over.

I think it's called a doggy bag because you might take some steak bones home for your... dog! Usage has broadened to include human leftovers, too. Also, consider starting some coriander from seed on your porch. It's easy to start from seed, and it bolts really fast (like basil), so staggering the plantings will ensure a constant supply of cilantro! Cheers!

"doggie bag" is a term used to describe a bag given to a customer to take home leftovers from a meal that was to be given to their dog. I live in Mexico and can tell you taco does not include cheese. There is another name for such a dish..quesataco.

I also had an old school grandma who washed my mouth out with soap as a kid when she caught me swearing 🤬 so I can also confirm that Cilantro tastes exactly like soap!!! I really enjoy your videos. Thank you so much for all the hard work that ya’ll put into your videos. You guys are so wonderful. I’m from PEI, started following you years ago, always makes me excited when you come back home too. Love your content. Cilantro is really easy to grow from seed and it doesn’t last long before it sets seed itself - probably doesn’t sell that much in Korean plant centres and more of a problem/income waste as it’s prime time is so short. The seeds are large and very affordable. I’d mail you some but I don’t think I can do that internationally. Maybe try finding coriander seed in the spice section and planting those! :D

Yaay! Sunday wind down ritual! Speaking of cilantro - Barefoot Contessa said too in her cooking show that she doesn't put cilantro in her salsa because as much as she'd want to - her taste buds registers it as soap. Apparently it's genetic. Such people have a variation in a group of olfactory-receptor genes that allows them to strongly perceive the soapy-flavored aldehydes in cilantro leaves. Also since we're on food, did you ever get to have your poppyseed muffin/bagel fix in Canada, Sarah?

Korean from CA, US. Love cilantro. For me it is a must in bahn mi, pico de gallo, and tacos. I do not have the genetic marker for soapy cilantro. I also like to add it to certain smoothies fresh or other kitchen sink dishes I scrounge up in a Peruvian green sauce like form. Latter is a great way to use up the rest of the cilantro. I have found the shelf life to be like that of an avocado. Ive heard freezing is a method of extending usability of both. Your videos are so relaxing. Look forward to them every Sunday!🤗

Hi Sarah, Hi Kyuho! Happy Sunday to you both! What a productive week you’ve had. I’m sorry that you couldn’t find your coriander (cilantro) plants. I have a garden box ready for cilantro, tomato, and jalapeños to grow. I call it my salsa box. 🥰 Your tacos looked delicious! Yes, Juvenile Justice…. My family and I have recently started watching this. Its crazy to now know that some of the cases are based on real stories. My sister told me that I need to watch ‘Worst Roommate Ever.’ When my husband and I went out on our first date-many years ago. When he was taking me home, there was a cul de sac, two blocks away from my home, that had yellow crime scene tape blocking the street. We later found out, that the guy that lived there, killed his roommate, chopped him up, threw away part of his body parts, then burned the rest of the guy in the fireplace. I will never forget that night! 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, yes….. There are evil people out there. Have a great week! Thank you for sharing your week and the Netflix series info with us! Take care.

Korean American here, born and raised in LA, and I FKN LOVE cilantro! After Korean/Asian food, Mexican food is definitely my next fave, and not just tacos and burritos, but dishes from all over Mexico. Mexican tortas and Vietnamese banh mis taught me the fusion trick of adding cilantro to any and all sandwiches, or to any dish if I want. I live in Europe and it's not a thing here, which sucks, but I just grow my own. Oh, and Sarah's "Korean laugh" at the end had me dying! It was more intense in some other video not that long ago, but can't remember which one. Anyway, cilantro rules!

Hello to both of you. I am a big fan of yours and never miss a vlog. I just wanted to make a comment about the coriander / cilantro topic. They are commonly used in Caribbean and Central American cuisine and they are two different herbs that taste different. Coriander is a long green leaf with slightly prickly edges. Mainly it is cooked with the food being prepared as in soups or stews. Cilantro is the one that looks like parsley which is used with Mexican food and is chopped up and sprinkled raw over the food. In Puerto Rico we prepare a base seasoning called Sofrito which is onions, bell peppers, lots of garlic, fresh coriander, fresh cilantro and fresh sweet peppers. It all gets ground in a blender and makes enough for several weeks.

Cilantro is a no-go for me either, although I don’t describe the distaste for it to be like soap.

It has been estimated a strong aversion to cilantro impacts anywhere from 4 to 14 percent of the general population, reports New York Daily News. This aversion is more commonly found in some races and ethnicities than others. A previous study found 21 percent of east Asians, 17 percent of people of European descent, and 14 percent of individuals of African ancestry to say they’re not fans of cilantro. Meanwhile, only 3 percent of South Asians, Latin Americans, and Middle Eastern people felt the same way about the herb.

I use coriander in a lot of dishes and in salad sometimes, so I'm definitely on the positive end of the spectrum. 🤭 That ending with Kyuho was soo hilarious lool. Daylight savings time cut my weekend short, but at least that means your next video will come sooner! 😆

Maybe you could ask where the mexican restaurant get their cilantro from next time you go to eat there? They might have to grow for themselves so they could use...and would be willing to sell you a plant.

I have heard about the cilantro soap gene! I'm Canadian and love it but I've heard about it for sure (in Canada, that's the first time I learned that many Koreans are averse)

Coriander is also known as Chinese parsley, dhania, or cilantro. They call it a doggy bag because you would say that you were bringing it back to your dog. People in the US did use to feed their dogs table scraps, instead of purchasing dog food. Also, I think even if they said they were bringing it back to their dogs, they actually ate it but said it to save face. Someone who was wealthy, wouldn't want to be seen as needing to eat leftovers. They didn't care about waste as it was flaunting their wealth. Nowadays, we would feel ashamed to leave food on our plates. I HATE wasting food. All the resources used to produce the food being wasted I feel so guilty. In some countries, bringing home leftovers is not a thing. That would bother me so much.

I love cilantro/coriander, but it took a while for me to "adjust" to it, I guess? I actually already started my seeds for this year, I think it adds so much to dishes! It likes cooler weather so I wanna get as much as I can before the weather gets too hot! I'm ready for spring here too, we just got 6" (15 cm) of snow yesterday 😫 I am so ready to garden and my plan this year is to get a bike (and a stroller to pull my dogs in haha) so I can ride on the trails by my house!
