But what do you do if you don’t have two wires (one for fan and one for light)? My light and fan are on the same switch and when I take out the box there are only 3 wires (one is a neutral, one is a line I imagine, and one for the fan and light together, it seems) not four like you have here.

Thanks for posting this. I am sorry you lost your old channel; don’t give up on getting it back! Most things aren’t lost forever in cyberspace. I want to do this in my bathroom. It would be my first electrical project. I live in a condo that was originally built in 71 as apartments. I have 1 breaker box in my unit and it’s very near the bathroom i’ll be working in (other side same wall, actually). I have a couple of topics to ask about: 1) what is the neutral wire for? In your switch box here, where did that wire come from and why did you leave it capped and connected to nothing? 2) how important is it that I test the ground wire, assuming I find one? Can you explain a bit about why the electrician’s meter reading showed it was properly ground? As well as give a teensy bit more detail on how your reattached it to the box to code with the pigtails and green screws?

Question: Why did you have to put the grounding pigtails in? Was it because the ground was too short?

Hi Sparkey, Helpful video here. Thanks : ) I have a newbie question: If there's only one black romex wire in that box running to the fan (ie. the newer white from that romex is capped), it can't be a traditional loop wire. Does that mean that 1) the fan's neutral wire is either grounded to the conduit (yikes!), or 2) the neutral lead on the fan is attached to a neutral line somewhere else, correct?

This was a 1960 house, so the old wiring had to go to the light because in 1960 houses didn't have bath fans. Therefore, the newer wire had to go to the fan. You can also make tests to find out which is which.

At 7:32, when you test if the ground is grounded, instead of turning the power back on and measuring voltage between line and ground, could you also do a continuity test (with the power off) to determine the same thing? Also, at 9:23, if the ground is already functioning, why do you need to go through the extra trouble of connecting it to the back of the box and pig-tailing it, etc?

@edsmith4414
@edsmith4414 3 жыл бұрын
When the fan was added later, they must have used a neutral up at the fan or light mount box, and they didn't need the new white wire in the cable they ran....hence the wire nut just capping it off. Should be a wire nut at the fan capping off the other end as well....so you don't do anything with it either. The original run of the light, the feed cable from the panel terminated at the light mounting box. A cable (black+white) called a 'switch leg' ran from the light box down to the wall switch box. They fed power in at the light box on the white wire (I normally do that on that black), and returned power to the light on the black. The neutral for the light remained in the light box. This is one way to wire a switch. The other is to feed the power cable to the switch box, use the black out of it on the "line" terminal of the switch, the black of the cable that runs to the light on the "load" terminal of the switch.....then the white coming back from the switch wire nuts to the white of the power cable.

Hi Bill, In this same situation as shown starting @ 7:32 here, lets say there was no bare copper ground visible entering the box, but there was a green pigtail screwed to the back of the box with the proper green screw, When doing the voltage test with the circuit on, lets say you read 121.3 Volts between the line/hot and neutral AND ALSO 121.3 Volts between the line/hot and the green/ground box bonding jumper. Doesn't that confirm that the ground is GOOD even though there is no visible ground wire seen entering the metal box? Armored cable (AC or BX) all tight going back to the breaker panel?

yes grounded through the conduit

The hot white wire confused me, no ID with tape or color paint required in the old days? Good deduction for the various wires, it would have taken me a lot longer to figure it out. My tap isn't long enough to reach inside the box, ground clip would be the other option. For a new new box I tap it from the back side. Need to get one of those circuit tracers.

Sparky, do you recommend keeping that rag wire? I recently purchased a house from 1955 that has a few original circuits fed by that type of cloth wiring and metal boxes. I don't believe the boxes are grounded. Was thinking maybe the rag wire should be replaced entirely sooner rather than later.

Can you add pigtail grounds to the plastic switch boxes?
@johnoshman7635
@johnoshman7635 3 жыл бұрын
No, there is no reason to. The plastic boxes aren't grounded / can't be grounded so there is no reason to add a pigtail with a grounding screw into the box. If this were a plastic box, he would have just attached the ground wire in the romex directly to the switch without any pigtails.

I have a single pole light switch and I'm adding a bathroom vent fan with a light on it. I presently have a light sconce light above my vanity. I would like to have my single pole light switch also turn on the light on my exhaust fan and the sconce together and a light switch to turn on my exhaust fan on its own. Do have instructions on how to do this or a video? I have an older home and I only see the black and white wire to my single pole light switch from the light switch box. Thank you

2nd question, when attaching wires on new switch, is it safe to say an acronym so you get the colors of the screws on the new switch correct, "gold is for load"? Thanks so much

Sparky, I have a question that you might be able to help me with. We have a modular home that was built with Self-Contained light switches. We've been doing a master bath and closet renovation and decide to close off a wall that had the door from the bedroom going into the closet (eliminating 1 of the 3 doors from our bedroom to utilize the space better) and moving the closet access going through the bathroom. We want to eliminate the light switch inside the closet completely where the old door was but, upon removing the wall, we noticed that the light switch in the closet has the main power coming into the switch from the ceiling and has the wires coming out of the switch to the closet light as well as running through the wall into the bathroom to that light switch, so two sets of wired going out from the light switch. How could we eliminate the closet light switch completely while still keeping power to the wires that go to the bathroom light switch? What would be the best way to do this?

Where does the other end of that unused neutral connect to in the fan?
@johngriffin824
@johngriffin824 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's connected on the other end either, they just used the black to send power from the switch to the fan then capped both ends of the white in the 14/2 Romex they used, as there's no neutral to pick up out of that switch box it just capped off both ends, I believe they got switched hot from that light switch and got the required neutral for the fan from the lightbox up in the ceiling, which is crazy, or maybe the fan is on a shared neutral now, from a neutral they found after cutting the hole for the fan
@johnoshman7635
@johnoshman7635 3 жыл бұрын
@@johngriffin824 I was wondering the same. Is it possible the ground in that romex is grounded and is also acting as neutral for the fan? Personally I would have tried to identify what the other end of that romex is connected to in that fan, at least just for piece of mind...
