Many lighting circuits are not 20 amp but typically 15 amp instead and therefore you will likely see a 14-2 with ground romex to a lighting fixture. Also, the romex from the switch junction box to an outlet box would then be a 14-2 with ground romex in your example.

Great video! I'd like to do something similar on a 15 amp circuit and use a switchbox to power other switchboxes on the same circuit. However, I'm confused (and stuck) by NEC 404.3 Enclosure, (B) Used as a Raceway, which states: Enclosures shall not be used as junction boxes, auxiliary gutters, or raceways for conductors feeding through or tapping off to other switches or overcurrent devices, unless the enclosure complies with 312.8. When I look at 312.8, it looks as if I can use enclosures meant for switches for feeding through, spliced, or tapping off to other enclosures, switches, or overcurrent devices as long as 1) The total of all conductors installed at any cross section of wiring space does not exceed 40 percent of the cross sectional area, 2) the total area of all conductors, splices and taps installed at any cross section of wiring space does not exceed 75 percent of the cross sectional area, 3) Bending space for conductors 4 AWG and larger complies with 314.28A2, and a warning label complying with 110.21B is applied to the enclosure. So with 312.8 in mind, will I be ok to use a switchbox to power another switchbox as long as I comply with 312.8 1, 2, 4 (3 does not apply)? Thank you so much for the help!

Nice and clear video. But through video editing at 8:18, you didn’t show adding the third black wire to the Wago connector that goes to power the switch as it magically appeared a few seconds in the video. Also, I would extend the electrical tape around the switch as some of the copper was visible on the switch which cause a short if it touches a ground in the box.

Good video just an observation, I realize service panel is right behind you but you should have still mentioned LOTO most DIYer’s don’t even know about it. Ground conductor should be last one off and first one on ( it’s the one that will protect you because you didn’t use LOTO lol ) we point all connectors up so moisture can’t collect inside and corrode. Last all screws should be vertical ( just a trade thing )

@ZunarZulfiqar4 жыл бұрын
I was wondering, if you have a sinagle duplex outlet, do you need a permit to make it a double duplex outlet? Doesn't adding a power strip do the same thing as far as overloading a circuit due to added receptacles to the original circuit? I didn't know I needed a permit to do that when I changed several single duplex to double duplex outlets. I do know what I was doing and even took the liberty of finding the first outlet in the circuit and making it a GFCI.
@SparkyChannel4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question but I think that would just be a replacement and wouldn't require a permit. You could always give a call to your local inspector and ask though.

Mr Sparky hope you doing good, I have a question for you, can I get power from a receptacle to a light switch and use a double light switch, 1 for exhaust fan and other for a light?
@xxZOMBIEx2 жыл бұрын
I got a problem. I was replacing(not installing) a GFCI outlet and a 2 single pole switch that was in the same electrical box. Only reason was the switch that controls the overhead bathroom fan broke and was stuck ON. I bought a new gfci outlet and 2 single pole switch to replace them. I figured I just put the wires where they were on old pieces. The original had white neutral wire going to the LOAD and red wire going from hot side of Load to the hot side of switch. I couldn't get the switch out far enough to just un screw and put on the new switch. So I had to get all the black wires off. That's where my issue started. I have 4 black wires. None were going to the outlet only the red. My tester showed one black wire going down the box was hot. I can't remember where all 4 blacks were going. There were only 4 screws used on switch. No ground. Only ground was on the outlet.

@sparkychannel What do you do with metal boxes where the house doesn’t have a bonding system because the house hasn’t been updated (with ground wires and only has black and white wires) since the late 50s? My new bathroom vent says I must connect the unit to the ground of the house but this dedicated circuit doesn’t have one even though the 20amp/12 ga was powering / used for a ceiling mounted heater.

Hell sir. Thank you for the video. Can you tell me how you’d run a new circuit from the panel in my unfinished basement that goes to an outdoor grill island. It’s a 75’ run total and I’m installing 3 outlets in the island. I’m considering running NM from the panel to a metal junction box near the point it exits the house, transition to THWN individual conductors that run outside in PVC conduit to the island.

Hi Sparky, Use to know a fellow who went by the name of Sparky Marine in Sausalito, Ca that provides services to folks with yachts. He helped me install a radar system on a 47-foot Gulfstar motor sailer, was that you? Anyway, I followed your excellent instructional video and it all worked! I was able to plug in a lamp for testing and I could turn it on or off, independent of the light switch position. The problem is that it did not work for my particular setup. Let me explain. Just for clarity, I have a ceiling light in my hallway that has a Lutron dimmer switch and I want to have an outlet to plug in a Vornado heater. Note, I am temporarily using an extension cord that has 3 wires for proof of concept before I get the proper outlet as you are using, perhaps this is the problem. Am not sure what the correct terminology is but my old school terminology would say that the power cord (that I cut off the plug) has a ribbed (positive) conductor, a negative conductor (not ribbed), and a ground. After I followed your instructions, it all worked using a lamp plugged into the outlet for test purposes. I thought, great! Now that it is working, I will go and get a proper outlet. THE PROBLEM Even though the test lamp worked as expected, when I plugged in the Vornado heater and then turned it on, the ceiling light in the hallway would come on, not what I wanted nor expected as the test lamp did not behave this way, and the Vornado heater, even though it was on did not put out any heat nor was the fan turning. Note, my Lutron dimmer switch has 3 screws, 3 terminals, one black, one gold, and one blue, not sure what the blue is used for. The Vornado heater has 3 settings, 750 watts, 1100 watts, and 1500 watts. It requires 12.5 amps at the max setting of 1500 watts. Obviously, I am doing something wrong. If you can help guide me, I'll buy you dinner or a couple of cases of beer! Thank You! MaxMcByte...

I have a question. I installed a GFCI outlet, jumping off of a light switch following this same configuration. My Klein GFCI outlet checker says everything is good. I later bought a circuit breaker finder tool and was trying it in different applications. When testing it on this circuit, I discovered it fails to work on both the GFCI outlet and the light socket (using an adapter), but does work if I open the light switch panel and connect the transmitter to the hot and ground wires with jumper clips. Could you please help me understand why it doesn't work on the outlet and light fixture on this circuit, but does work when connected to the switch wiring? Thanks. It works great on other light fixtures and outlets that aren't sharing a circuit.

What if the power source is inside the finished wall in plastic box? How do you get the romex in the feed box and secure it?
@DrBilly902103 жыл бұрын
When I ran into this, I figured my options were to use a wire snake (aka "fish tape") from the box in the finished wall to the new box you're installing OR remove the finished box, run the wires, and install what's called an "old work" box. My experience has been better using the "old work" box, especially if you have to drill through studs to route the romex, but YMMV. Not saying you should do what I do, just putting out my experiences.

Hah! Pretty did a similar job in my garage last week - except I was adding a convenience light and a 2-gang box (light switch + always hot receptacle). My line wire was coming into the lighting fixture first. I thought I could run a 12-2 from the light fixture to the gang box, but after thinking it through, it was (of course) a 12-3 that I needed. I was second guessing myself for a few minutes there...

Electricians need to do lots of thinking. That's why we're so smart. LOL! Thanks Jo!

If you add a receptacle to a lighting circuit that uses knob and tube wiring, can you just add romex wiring to the circuit to add the receptacle, or does the NEC code require that the entire circuit be converted over to romex? In general, can you just add circuits to an existing knob and tube installation using romex for the additions, and just leave the existing knob and tube wiring in place? Thanks.

You can add romex to an existing knob and tube circuit, providing you are not overfilling the box you are tapping off of. If you're planning on taking power from a light switch, there will most likely be no neutral in that box. Older homes usually have the neutral at the light and have a dead end switch leg at the switch. If you do find a knob and tube junction box to tap off of, you will have to install a ground fault receptacle since here is no ground with knob and tube.
