Sephardic DNA Project

The Avotaynu DNA project is compiling a library of Y-DNA from men of patrilineal Jewish heritage to provide evidential data for genealogists and historians. There is no Jewish gene. While most Ashkenazim derive from a relatively small genetic population, Sephardim are have more varied genetic heritage. In this presentation to Sephardic World, Adam Brown assisted by Michael Waas, discuss the project. The genetic census of the Sephardim has already identified people as far apart as Turkey and the Caribbean with shared ancestry, presumably from Spain. The Sephardic DNA project should eventually answer the question of whether large numbers of Ashkenazim have Sephardic ancestry as well as resolving the question of the genetic origins of the bnei anusim in the American southwest.

Ive done 4 different DNA kits. All pretty much have the same results. 78-80% Iberian, Greek , Canary Islands, and 8% western Ashkenazi. I remember my dad telling me he was a Jew, the reason i was circumcised as a baby, but he never elaborated on that. Now much older, i find out from my sister we are all a bunch of Jews whose background is from Jews that left Spain. My grandmother's last gift to me, a small star of David. I sure would like to find out where I come from!! Family traditions all point jewish. From burial within 24 hrs, to eating 12 grapes on new years. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to who or where i can find the most definitive information on jewish genealogy?

Haplogroups I, J, and K, including their subclades, are believed to have originated in Central Asia. Over time, various subgroups migrated to different regions, and Haplogroup J, in particular, became prevalent in the Middle East.

How much does the "Cohen Modal Haplotype" tell you by itself?

On it’s own it tells you that you share a genetic ancestor with many others around the globe who all carry oral traditions of being descended from Israelite Cohanim, which supports the accuracy of the claim.
