*NOTE* I wanted clarify what I said about the person who was caught with $12,000 of stolen cosmetics in their car having a $0 bail/bond. I will admit that I'm not well versed in what happens when someone goes to jail and why they are kept or released. I will tell you 100% I was NOT trying to say that bail/bond should be used as a punishment. I do apologize if it came off that way. My concern was that this person was let go to possibly continue to steal. When this person was caught stealing and arrested by police, they were recognized by the employee of the store because they were there the day before for stealing. It didn't say the person even had an upcoming court date to decide if they were going to prison for stealing. It felt like less than a slap on the wrist for a felony crime. BUT keep in mind, I know NOTHING about what it's like to go to jail, work in a jail, or be a part of criminal cases like this, so I could totally be wrong on my opinion. And of course, it's important to let the criminal justice system go through the proper process. Thank you to those of you who do know more for helping me to understand. ALSO regarding the "Sephora and Ulta employees need to be trained" statement, at no point was I trying to imply that they are not trained. I was saying the businesses would be smart to train employees to sell products appropriate for their customers, not that this wasn't happening at all. I can tell you that at my Ulta, the employees I've heard talking to customers, for the most part, have no clue what they're talking about. That's not to say they were never given training, but if they were trained, they don't show it in their recommendations.
@mouse23908 ай бұрын
If you go to a specialty store it's reasonable to expect the employees to have some knowledge about what they're selling...I worked for years for a landscaping company and a garden center--damn straight I had to know about plants. If I go to an Apple store the workers had better be able to answer my questions if they want me to spend my money. On the flip side, if I go to Target or Walmart I'd be an idiot to ask advice. That said, I doubt these kids ask employees for recommendations since they know it all already haha.

While thieves def may steal when out, a higher bond doesn’t really prevent that. And there isn’t even room for larcenists (?) to go to jail in Billings MT, I’m sure it’s worse everywhere else. You ask relevant questions, but the system is verrrrry fragile right now, and most of those issues are just “is what it is” material. :(

At one point the daughter got on the phone and told me what her skin looks like. After i explained that Drunk Elephant is not meant for her young skin and return the product to us. She wound up screaming in the phone and hung up on me. Fast foward to yesterday a parent actually asked me what product will work on her 9 year skin. We looked at product ingredients! Yay for mom for being a responsible parent!

My little one is desperate to copy my routines be it beauty skin or hair and I find that at 9 she is very open to learning about stuff. She has very sensitive skin so we naturally look for gentle products low on ingredients alcohol and extras and go for PH neutral hydrating products so she has a gentle face wash and moisturizer. Sometimes a face mask. We talk about how skin changes and why I'm using what I'm using and what she might need in the next few years. Skin care has changed so much and so quickly it is easy to see how this might happen. It is relatively easy to do research it's what I've done to help my poor skin but teaching kids to do patch tests and bee gentle with their skin and hair is absolutely the parents job.

These parents are 100% at fault for allowing their children to buy these skincare products without research or educating themselves first for what they're purchasing for their kids. From what I've seen is these kids either see these products being used by children their age or young adult influencers on TikTok in those daily skincare routine videos. In other videos covering this topic, some of these children say they'll use these acids or retinols 2x a day EVERYDAY! Some can't even read or pronounce the product names. I think it's even more insane that some parents join in on their kids TikTok videos to do their skincare routine together and never question what products their children are using or read the directions just following what their kids says to do.
@aphreyst45518 ай бұрын
Parents should only blame themselves. Don't rely on a Sephora salesperson, they're not dermatologists. Use your brain for even one moment and you'll realize your nine year old doesn't need acid-based skincare. A nice, gentle facewash, a light moisturizer, and SPF. It's common sense.
@jennifermelmore41478 ай бұрын
Not just that, but how many Sephora employees were posting TikToks about how parents totally ignored what they were told when they did have the expertise to tell them. But then, I feel the kind of parent that buys their kid whatever they want because of what’s trending on an app they shouldn’t have access to til they’re 13 is not big on personal responsibility.

I would argue it's not common sense. I don't think the general public would know an exfoliating acid from a humectant. Not saying they are stupid just that it isn't information everyone cares about. Thank you for a clear, concise explanation of why young children do not have skin that is mature enough & is not thick enough to handle these skincare products. Young children should not be exposed to this sort of content. Unfortunately, they are, because of their parents who give their children an electronic babysitter. Many parents give in to their children who clamber for the latest & greatest electronic gadgets. Why? Because their little friends have these useless toys. The fault lies squarely with the parents. Parents, please do not try to be your child’s best friend. “Do not handicap your children by making their lives too easy”. This is a quote from the late author Robert Heinline. It comes from a lovely softcover book titled The Notebooks of Lazarus Long. This is where parents make their first & biggest mistake. You are your child’s guardian, their defender, their teacher & the one who sets down the rules. Some rules are carved in stone. Some rules need to be refined. And lastly some rules need to be reexamined and sometimes tossed out. You are there to make sure your child grows into a good & productive adult. Holy Crap! Did I get off on a tangent? I’m very sorry.

I bought my teen a gentle facial cleanser and a moisturizer with 30SPF in it. That’s his entire morning skin care routine. He wanted all the serums and creams and everything else, but we sat down, looked up the ingredients and what they do and discussed whether he actually needs them or not. We also talked about whether he thought using harsh ingredients might cause his psoriasis to flare up. He agreed that a good gentle face wash and a moisturizer were all he needed (I insisted on the SPF). Especially since he doesn’t really have an issue with acne (knock wood). He still watches skin care and makeup content, and I’m fine with him wearing makeup (I just want him to start with a clean face and wash his face at the end of the day), but he’s a bit more discerning now and tries not to believe things just because an influencer said so.

Jen, I work at Sephora and we do have education on these ingredients. Most of us have decades of experience. Several times a shift I get the stink eye from a tween for telling her guardian or her that these products are damaging. The Guardian usually listens as I give advice on appropriate skincare. Sometimes, the guardians don't listen and buys the products anyway. Sometimes the child is alone and won't listen to reason and buys the products. At a certain point, exhaustion sets in and we just have to let the people learn from mistakes. I am no one's parent. I can only educate. Love You Jen. I went to a dermatologist as a teenager for my acne and the items they prescribed me tore up my skin so badly. High % benzoyl peroxide cream (had to be kept in the fridge) and Retin A. I stopped using it because it was just stripping my skin like the girl in the picture. Granted, this was back in the very early 90s and much more is known about these products - but at some point the parent and the child need to step up and say "this isn't right for me" and take corrective steps. Even as an adult there are things that irritate my skin that on paper should not. Its all a learning process and we just need to educate ourselves more.

Our jail is overflowing and in order to prioritize violent offenders, most people with nonviolent offenses are released without bail. There have also been multiple deaths at the jail in recent years, mostly because of opiates (either through deadly withdrawal or overdose) and the jail is reluctant to hold anyone with substance use disorders. So what might look like "soft on crime" at first is really down to logistics. Can't hold people if you don't have the space or proper medical personnel to monitor drug/alcohol withdrawal.

We also have venders that come in to the stores that are more than willing to educate us on their brands, as well as other educational opportunities. We can't flat out refuse to sell a product to a minor because the law doesn't age restrict ingredients (I wish it did) but we can gently steer kids and parents away from things we know can be harmful to young people's skin. Ultimately we live in a free market economy and it is buyer beware.

Ulta employee here! I’m exhausted and tired of getting yelled at by clueless children and parents who don’t understand the effects of retinols/retinals on skin. They refuse to listen to us when we tell them that retinol without sunscreen can cause chemical burning and permanent scarring. I had one teen who told me she wanted to start a retinol and then mentioned she wanted to book a brow wax. I let her know that once she starts a retinol she’ll have to reduce her waxes because it can pull the skin apart. She rolled her eyes at me and laughed saying I was making it up

as someone who previously worked at Sephora.. we had a whole day of skincare training when we did our new hire training ! We were expected to know skin types, ingredients, brands, etc. And we also had consistent training weekly in all beauty realms. And consistent brand training with brand reps ! Training all around ! :)

I have a huda palette that is full of the coral reds when i did a fox makeup look for halloween. Thankful that my face and eyes were not stained, but if you have paler skin, maybe use a lot of priner and setting powder to put a barrier between your lids and the red pigments to avoid staining.

Many states are doing away with monetary bail as it disproportionately affects offenders who are poor.. specifically minorities. In theory… bail is not a punishment. It is only to secure your appearance in court. But for some offenders, it becomes a huge burden.

As a parent, it's my job to educate myself about what my kids are into. Therefore, I can tell you so much about pokémon that I never wanted to know but do because I care about what my kids are into. I have gotten my 10-year-old a moisturizer with sunscreen and gentle wash for his face but I can barely get him to take a shower. Parents. I beg you to look into what your kids are watching and talk to them about it. Easy teachable moments everywhere.

I think some of the trouble is not just that the kids skins more sensitive, but the fact they don’t know what they’re doing. I’ve had pretty bad allergic reactions to skincare, but I got that shit off my face immediately before it did any damage. If it’s just play to them they’re gonna keep using it because they don’t even understand what they’re supposed to get out of it.

The thing is as a Sephora employee no matter what you recommend it doesn’t matter. There’s been times where I’ve informed a product she wanted wasn’t good for kids but she didn’t care and got it for her child.

I work at one of these stores (will not disclose) and we do get trained but we cannot stop these kids/parents from shopping for the items/buying it for their kids. Especially if they do not ask us for help because we could offend them. We get tons of calls about this from kids and parents and they are not complaints about us. More so they call for tips on how to make it work on their skin, then we inform them the skin care is not meant for young skin and they are welcome to return it and we can help them find a more gentle routine. Usually this is where they get angry and hang up. We try, we have knowledge but we cannot offer it unless the customer lets us.

35:26 as a big makeup store employee I would love to have a video or pamphlet that briefly describes some of the more common/popular ingredients, what they do, and maybe even an age range. I was fortunate enough to have a passion and interest in skincare long before I started so I had that knowledge. But with all the training they gave us, there wasn’t any info on ingredients like that. There was just mention of what order things can go in, how to make a routine, and how to sell more product

The class action lawsuit re: pigment is really interesting to me. The FDA is slower than a lot of similar governing bodies in Europe and Asia (which is why the pigments discusses are approved in Europe, and why sunscreen here vs. Europe and Asia is so different). The idea that a product that has been proven to be safe in a specific use case overseas could be somehow proven unsafe here just seems so silly. But I am biased, I love red eyeshadow and studied chemistry in college, haha. Thanks for highlighting this, Jen, I'm gonna keep up with it as well.

I've noticed that whenever Nikki mentions one of her products, she always says something like "from my brand Nimya", she's very good with disclosing that kind of stuff and really is an example of how easy it is to always be upfront with promotion. So I do think influencers should clarify that info every time, especially with tiktok where any one video could be a viewers first and they would have no context on the person.

I was on a grand jury and they the cops kept having to let them go. The only cases like this where they look to jail is when they are dealing drugs or is a ring. Even the theft rings barely got real consequences. As a juror at that time I was like wow world.😢
