Puppy training! Dogs are ALL about consistency. Be mindful of how you are reacting to the dog! For example if Cheeki does something naughty, you should never call her to "come" and then she comes and then you scold her. She's already forgotten about what she did wrong but now she thinks she's getting scolded for coming when you called. That little stuff is key. Don't expect the dog to do something (jump on you) that makes you react happily and then do something totally different (jump on others) and get scolded. Consistency is the magic word!
@thecityinthesky20128 жыл бұрын
Yes and yes, and the dog shouldn't be scolded in general. Dogs can make choices and will if you reward the good. Ignore the bad. Then the dog will always chose things that get rewarded.

Yay for being a responsible pet owner! Lots of it has to do with good puppy socialization and a balance of mental and physical stimulation! (I can't help saying stuff on dog stuff. I'm an animal behavioral trainer working towards not only being a trainer, but also a behavior consultant if you're running into behavioral challenges) ! My biggest advice for you Jenn is to remember what kind of relationship you want with your dog and how you train will be the same thing. How would you want to learn!? Positive training is highly recommended. Puppy socialization is super important that will determine how your dog will be when meeting new people, new dogs, and being in new environments. The most important one is environments. Reward with lots of treats when you go somewhere new! Positive association. Congrats on the puppy!
@Ponyhoof488 жыл бұрын
Thecityinthesky _x yeees word! And also the most important thing is to treat the dog as an actual dog with dog needs, as for example a good leadership and a lot of exercise. Way too many people treat their dogs (and especially the cute n little ones like cheeky) as if they weren't real dogs. Like picking them up all the time, carrying them around, letting them sit on the lap... all seems kind of innocent but in the end that's where problematic behavior can result!
@imjennim8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your input! Will definitely be remembered. (:
@thecityinthesky20128 жыл бұрын
clothesencounters any time. Seriously. You can ask me any questions. I'd be happy to answer. Everything that I have learned or know is all science based. I'd rather someone train and have a positive relationship with their dog than call me later asking to resolve behavior challenges. You have the opportunity to keep your dog balanced, happy and healthy! :) have fun!
@thecityinthesky20128 жыл бұрын
anai arens It's ok for owners to do all of that, but what's not is ignoring dog body language. So it's not about our actions it's about what we ignore! So it's all about good boundaries :) but you are certainly accurate on meeting the needs of the dogs.

I've had many pets of varied sizes (cats and dogs) go in and out of my life. Here are my tips. Sorry. It's super long. Good luck reading. 1. Crating works well for potty training. Get a crate/carrier big enough for Cheeki to turn around in but not sit up. The small space will become hers. So if she is bad, lock her in the crate for 1 or 2 hrs most. Have her sleep in it locked at night as well. It'll train her to pee on the pad or when you take her for walks. Eventually, you won't have to lock the gate. She'll know it's her room and to stay well behaved not to pee elsewhere. If she gets in trouble, she knows to go to her crate. Once she knows the general house rules, upgrade her to a cushy bed or something. 2. If you don't mind the fur, after Cheeki knows where to pee and where not to pee, then consider letting her sleep in the room or bed with you. Dogs are pack animals and have the need to be sleeping together in the pack. Allowing her to have close proximity to you helps her stay attached/loyal to you as you've let her into you and Ben's "pack." My dog kept acting up and peeing or running away after we picked him off the street. Once he learned the rules, I let him sleep in the bed with me. He's never misbehaved since. 3. Don't punish her for something that happened a while ago. Punish her during the bad act. Dogs have a different sense of time so they won't understand why you're upset with them or what they did wrong. 4. Reinforce positive behavior with treats/pets/kisses/hugs. They like it so they'll likely do their best to remember the trick or whatever they did to please you so. 5. Read food labels well. Usually the first ingredient listed is the one that is in the food the most, i.e. chicken meal versus chicken meat. 6. Since Cheeki is white, I recommend wiping her face/eyes, paws, and butt regularly after walks to keep her fur from becoming dyed a reddish brown color. 7. Visit your parent's or friend's house with her often for long periods of time. In the case that you have to travel, you don't want her to be depressed with separation anxiety bc she's unfamiliar with the people you left her with. So get her familiar with the important people and environments and gradually leave her with them for a weekend. Then increase to a week. That way you can feel at ease when you have to leave her with your mom or friend for a week or more if they are willing to pet-sit. Other than the obvious junk like keeping up with vaccines, regular walks and playtime, etc., I'm sure you'll do fine. It's all a learning process for both human and dog. Everyone has their methods or opinions on "child-rearing" as with any parent, so just pay attention to what you think is best. You're her mom. You'll know best. You don't even have to take my advice. Good luck! P.S. Congrats! But, please, please, please, savor/appreciate the time you have with her. I've had to say good bye to several of my pets and I can tell you that it's easy to take them for granted. Take plenty of videos and photos and just memorize everything you love about her so that you don't take advantage of her love for you. I'm sure you'll do great!

PLEASE look into some type of pet insurance. As my dog got older he would get sick all the time and it's really expensive to get them seen at the vet. An emergency visit can be like $100 to step through the door (not including x-rays and meds). The insurance can cover teeth cleanings, shots, and hidden fees. You might not need it but it's something to consider. Can't wait to see more. Love your videos!

LOVE the little sign in the background - such a cute touch! For teething, I really recommend getting an elk antler. My 2 dogs looooove theirs and they last SO long. They're even good for when they're past the "terrible twos" for dogs. You can get them at any pet store and they have different sizes for different dogs! Plus they don't smell like bully sticks can. Plastic bones are fine but the antlers actually wear down and are better for their teeth.

When she bites you, yelp, immediately stop playing, and turn you're back to her. There is also bitter spray you can put on stuff to keep her from chewing on it, but be careful because some dogs like it. My family used Tabasco sauce for a bit instead, but it can stain.
@tiffhoneeyx8 жыл бұрын
I recommend getting Bitter Apple Spray! I have a golden retriever and when he was teething, we would spray that on the couch corners, walls, or anything he could possibly get his mouth on. The flavor of it makes them not want to even get near it. They sell it at Petsmart!

I have had dogs my entire life, and this is my best tip for you: don't be afraid to really tell your dog off when it does something bad! It may seem harsh, and I know the pain and guilt you may feel when doing it. But believe me, you will thank yourself in the future because it really makes a different in your dogs behaviour.

Is Cheeki an adoption dog? A tip I would recommend would be to "play" and touch your pup's paws that way they will get used to have their feet touched and when it comes to grooming & nail clipping down the track it won't be nearly as stressful! (This is coming from a dog groomer as well!) x

My puppy's teething (he's an english mastiff *big dog* compared to your maltese poodle!) was a breeze! When you're home, you just got to monitor what cheeki's chewing on. If she likes strings & dangly things, get her a rope. But if she likes tearing stuff up, then the best option would be a stuffed toy (these toys can get kind of pricey, haha beware!) When I had my dog, I would just give him a rope & cardboard boxes, empty toilet rolls, tissue boxes and it would keep him entertained. When you're not home, gotta kennel train her so she doesn't chew on your equipment, shoes, cables, etc. I know it's mean to put her in the kennel, but be strict and let her know who's the mummy! Hehe, good luck on training her. I wish you all the best, xx
@sherrieB148 жыл бұрын
Also, another tip I find super helpful: never get toys similar to the things you have in your house. Cables - black. Rope should be multicolored; not the same consistency & size of the items lingering around. Get her something bulky and twisted. Set up a spot that is 'her' area so she knows what's good to make a mess and other areas of the house that is not.

Since she's still a puppy, you'll want to start exposing her to stuff that usually scare dogs so that they'll get over it and will be used to it! When they're still puppies, they're open to different stuff, so take this opportunity while it's still fresh! For example, vacuuming?? A lot of dogs are scared of the loud noises the vacuum cleaner emits but if you do it regularly around Cheeki while she's still a puppy, she'll get used to it in no time. :)

i've had my dog for 16 years we rescued her as a puppy from an abusive home and my best advice i can give you is let your dog enjoy their life and every moment because they deserve nothing less and all they wanna do is love you, i see so many people walking their dogs on tight leashes and making them sit and wait at the end of every path to me that's cruel and just ridiculous we never did anything like that as a family with my dog we taught her things like sit but for the most part we weren't crazy on training her or anything and let her experience the world for herself and be independent but still reassuring our dominance and letting her know not to bite the hand that feeds you and look where she is now a super healthy matured dog who walks off the lead and doesn't need to be told when to wait before crossing the road because she knows you only cross if there's no cars just like kids do. it's a big learning curve but do not feel pressured to turn your dog into something so manufactured your dog should be allowed to be free and make its own decisions just remember to be safe and to be their parent, ofc don't let them run around in roads but don't restrict them from understanding the real reason as to why, not just because you said so and you are in control of their every move that in itself will create a bad dog in my own personal opinion xx

The idea of 'pack leaders' is based off of very old and faulty information. Cesar Millian creates a lot of unnecessary stress in situations that just causes more problems.

Caroline G although youre not totally wrong, cesar does solved all if not almost all problems. i think hes method is not about the "harshness" but how he execute it. (sorry idk how to put it) i also think hes the most efficient in communicating the idea of a pack leader to new or ignorant dog owners, with the no nonsense attitude. he doesnt have a crowd following for nothing hahah~ :D

Puppy tip! Something that really helped when I got my first puppy was teaching her BOUNDARIES. I keep her in my little backyard when I'm out, and when I come home, she is not allowed into the house until I say "Okay!" I didn't want her running in and out like a maniac while I was carrying groceries or whatever :) So I had to intentionally train her to wait on the stoop, and it's been SO awesome because now, anywhere I take her (traveling, camping, etc.), she understands boundaries and isn't running amok. It makes things so much easier and I honestly think dogs (like kids!) need boundaries!

Best tip I could give on your new puppy - make sure anything you hold near and dear or just don't want to have to keep replacing is clear out of her reach!! We adopted our pup when he was 9 months and was still very much in the puppy chewing phase. He chewed through remote controls, blankets, boots, shoes... you name it! I recommend getting Cheeki a Kong brand toy. They come in a few different shapes, and you can even hide treats in them. Dogs love them! Kongs are indestructible!

You'll probably find great tips on puppy training online but start getting her used to stuff early. Like being alone for periods of time (separation anxiety is a bitch!), taking baths, trimming claws, hoovers, hair dryers. You know, stuff that you need her to be ok with later in life ☺️

Then what lens would you recommend for the blurred background ?
@marilyn54198 жыл бұрын
like the t3i, the starter kit lens comes with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens its the f/3.5-5.6 aperture that allows you to have a blurry background

It's all about aperture. Go for a 50mm f/1.8 or even a 35mm f/1.4. The 1.4 will give you slightly more blur.

I really rec looking into Fenzi dog training methods. They're aimed at dog sports people, but really focus on creating a good relationship between person and dog and communication between person and dog which is really helpful for dog training.
