Roy is keeping in the long tradition of trumpet players who sang. Cats like Dizzy, and Kenny Dorham and Chet Baker and of course the granddaddy of them all Pops Armstrong. Long live the great jazz trumpet tradition and Brother Hargrove for continuing the lineage. Boppish regards!

Actually I was lucky enough to see Roy about 100 times -- at the Jazz Gallery for a decade, etc. He never gave less than his best, and I saw some shows with this band, or RH, or the classic quartet with Justin, Larry Willis, Gerald Cannon and Willie Jones III that were the kind where you flew up into the air. One night in particular --at the Highline, the Big Band played first, and then RH came on. It lasted about five hours, and I think the fire department had to come put the flames out!! At that gig, Jonathan Baptiste played keys for both bands. Without a single sheet of music. He incited the fire.

This performance by Roy Hargrove is an true picture of his musical gifts. To add he is singing, directing the band and playing his trumpeter. A magical performance. RIP my friend.

Jazz on a summer's day in Washington Square, an absolutely killing band led by the late great (but then oh-so-young) Roy Hargrove--a musician's musician who was somehow always a charismatic audience favorite too. Someone get me a time machine...

The members have changed a few, but ten years later they got the Grammy Award for Roy Hargrove Big Band, which is the same as the version on the Grammy album. The trumpet section in the Grammy version where Greg Gisbert got the lead is better, but the trumpet section at that time is also great. There I can see Darrent Barrett.

1:24. Sometimes you wonder how or why people take to music? Watch this lady, at a moment of horn-madness, when most would be mouthing, 'Wow!', or 'Woah', or 'Whoop whoop!', this lady casually slips a sweet into her mouth as if she is listening to the most boring public speech she has ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
