Synthesizer demo of the classic analog synthesizer SCI Prophet-5 rev. 3 from 1984. In this movie I play some of my own sounds - on some sounds I used a bit delay (Korg SDD-3000) and reverb effects (Yamaha SPX900).

Some settings sound similar, though. I prefer the Sequential sound. And I don't say this because I spent a fortune on a Prophet-5. The one in the video was lend to me...

Hey, are there any modifications to your prophet 5 in this video? I recently got a rev 4 prophet 10 and for the life of me can’t seem to recreate the brass sound your doing at 4min, it just doesn’t seem to have the midrange presence or punch.

The rev 3.2 and 3.3 have an identical sound character - the 3.3 is basically the 3.2 save for the increased memory capacity and a couple of reliability tweaks.

If you are new to the modular world, I would urgently recommend a small system or standard system. The standard sysem is okay to begin with. Later, you could add more modules if you see that you have fun and you do understand everything. To begin with a monster system is not a good idea, it could frustrate you. The learning process is much quicker and more enjoyable on a small system. I learned on a Korg MS-20, MS-10 and SQ-10.

Prophet 6 is better than a Rev 3 prophet 5 (much better filter in P6 and more bottom end). P5 wins on being a bit more loose/organic but is very limited vs Prophet 6 and that has 99% of the tone.

With the appereance of the Prophet-08, Prophet-6, Prophet REV2 I was hoping to get the real Prophet-5 sound for little money, but it didn't work out. Maybe Behringer? :-)

AnalogAudio1 okay, what about if you had a Apollo 16x and a bunch of patch bays? Having all the synths patched into the patch bay routed to the Apollo?Is that also a good way to do this? Or having some sort of preamp/mixer section better ?

@@synthdude7664 bit late to answer this, but in case someone else wonders: both are completely valid approaches. There are two ways to rig it up with a patchbay. One is to have just two outputs from the patchbay into your Apollo. You'd have to re-route cables everytime you want to record a different synth. The other way with a patchbay is to just patch out each synth into your interface, which uses a lot of channels. With the mixer approach, you just have to get the gainstaging right when you first set it up and just have a stereo track in your DAW that you record ALL synths too. Ideally, you want a low noise, many channel mixer depending on how many synths you're running into it.

@AnalogAudio1 OH.... What a synth! Here in Brazil, we don't use YAMAHA synthesizers so much, except the legendary DX7 which uses FM synthesis sound. We love more the traditional Roland keyboards. They are much more 80s-like to music, especially the classic D-50, which later it was integrated to the MT-32 GM synth for DOS games. We sometimes use KORG or Moog synthesizers for loops, ambience sounds or sequences on music, but professional musicians prefer much more Roland. But the Prophet 5 was sure mind-blowing! I love it so much! It reminds me of TOTO.

Der Prophet-6 klingt "genauer", "sauberer" im direkten Vergleich. Aber bei einigen Sounds ist die Ähnlichkeit groß. Ich würde trotzdem den Prophet-5 bevorzugen.

sicher nicht weil "verstimmter" :-) einen perfekt gestimmten Prophet-5 würde ich gegenüber einem "leicht verstimmten" Exemplar bevorzugen. Nein, es ist das Klangvolumen des Gesamtsounds. SLOP verändert das Klangvolumen nicht, verstimmt nur zufällig die Oszillatoren. Für meine Begriffe klingen die Prophet-5 VCOs besser, kultiger, wenn man sie gegeneinander verstimmt. Anderer Aufbau, anderer Sound. Der 6er ist seit kurzem verkauft... eine Kopie des Prophet-5 ist er auf keinen Fall - aber bei manchen Soundeinstellungen sind beide recht ähnlich. Aber manche wollen einfach nur einen guten analogen Polysynth, Prophet 5-Ähnlichkeit hin- oder her.

If a synth sounds right, if it fits into the track I am working on and has a good workflow, I will use it. The synth itself doesn't has to be impressive - the result should be.

I believe AA1 is referring to the aftertouch/velocity mod offered by Synthtaste (in Bochum in western Germany), who additionally offer a bender board with a memory expansion to 320 (I think?) patches. The mods themselves are basically limited to rev 3 P-5s (I'm unsure as to whether they have a variant for the P-10, although I can only assume it has yet to be developed).

the fact is, the P5 has more things in common with the Arp than with the Minimoog. Just few examples: 2 VCO architecture, no octave switches, PWM by LFO or env, OSC sync, pulsewidth freely variable, standard ADSR envelope...

I have been told since the 1983 era that the DX7 did a very close sound as a Prophet 5 and thanks to you now I know that FM sunthesis is almost as good as a Prophet 5 and maybe other synths but I need to hear the original like in this video and then i can say !! Thanks a lot, EXCELLENT VIDEO !!!
