Your back-to-back demos towards the end show that the rev4 is a legit Prophet. We've been doing some comparisons too and they can sound very, very similar and where they are different, it isn't a case of "better" or "worse". Or at least that's what I'm finding. 🙂

Must be hard having more Prophets than the Tanakh.

Yeah I can confirm this from extensive comparisons to old Prophet videos. I'm able to match up the sound perfectly every time. What's really cool is that with the REV1/2 REV3 filter switch and the Vintage Mode knob, I can match up any Prophet sound no matter the revision. Very cool
@peterldelong3 жыл бұрын
If there’s a difference, I can’t hear it. First Prophet was a Rev 2 in the late 70’s, which is long gone, but I have my Rev 3 and got the P10 Rev 4 in January. Sometimes the Rev 4 sounds a tad bit brighter but It’s all Sonic Integrity.

Compare, 18:14 to 18:22. Not saying it would make me buy the old one for sure, but it still has the edge sonically. This is much more evident in person where we have the old and the new in the studio and I prefer the old every time, even though they keyboard sucks, you can trigger it with midi. That said, it seems I am the only one to like the old one more??? Maybe my ears lie to me???

…and now, with the new OS update, you can split/layer !! WAY better keys…velocity and aftertouch….expanded memory…ability to get parts now (if necessary) from the factory…much greater reliability…ability to have a Rev 1,2, or 3….polyphonic portamento…and a new Rev.4 is much cheaper than an original on the used market is. THIS REALLY IS A NO BRAINER !! My one complaint (if it is a complaint at all)…the initial tuning routine (when it is cold) seems to take longer than my Rev. 3’s used to take. The solution…let it warm up for 5 min. first…then tune it, and it maintains stability better than the original.

When is Roland firing back with the Jupiter-8 and Yamaha with the DX7? Well, never mind. Mr. Ikutaro Kakehashi wouldn't have wanted that from Roland, but hey, a Jupiter-XL would be great for Roland's 50th anniversary. You know, a 6-octave Jupiter-XL, with polyphonic aftertouch, and the following loadable models being released one after another: D-50, D-10/20, U-20, D-70, S-770, JP-8000, and the V-Synth. Roland has the code, they can do it. I mean, since the D-50, everything is software. All that needs to be modeled are the respective D/A converters, and of course the S-770 A/D converters to, if the Jupiter-XL were to become a sampler.

He says, "These keys are very comfortable to play!". In Japan, an older sister is read as "ane" "ney" "nei" "nee" and so on. (all read in romaji). This is similar to a word "ne" which is often used between or end of a sentence. It has no meaning and it is not used in writing. Google translate picks it up and translates it as "an older sister".
@auxorion3 жыл бұрын
@@popozz Makes sense, thanks for the clarification! Yeah, the "ne" at the end really doesn't mean anything does it. It's almost like saying "eh?" at the end of a sentence.

It’s a very pretty looking instrument with a proper 5 octave keybed like the original, and properly placed mod and pitch wheels. In the 80’s for me it was down to a Prophet 5 or Jupiter 8 .. I choose the later for its extra polyphony and split/layer capability .. and the midi capability with the MD/8. I personally can’t justify this Rev4 though sonically with the VST’s out now days.

@3:00 that beautiful patch suffers dearly from a lack of available voices, unfortunately. A 5 voices programmable polysynth was innovative and revolutionary in 1978, but in 2020+? Not.
Some of the presets after ~14mins clearly sound brighter on the Rev 4 - so much for that knee-jerk mod on the second batch :/
@auxorion3 жыл бұрын
That's just slight differences in component ranges - I'm almost certain they just ported over the presets. I doubt they pulled John Bowen away from his game of Bingo to have him sit there and re-create them again on a replica synth. As an example, I followed along (with my Reissue Minimoog Model D) SynthMania's video where he was checking out some Minimoog patches from an old book.. if I matched the knob settings 100% with the video, it was just a bit wrong... adjusting the knobs a little got me an identical sound though. It's just little differences in values, no big deal. The Prophet 5 Rev 4, is probably the same situation - the brand new components WILL be the slightest bit different values... setting the cutoff to 7 on a new P5 might be like setting the original to an 8. Same sound, just slightly different settings to get the same sound. (BTW: the first batch of Prophet 5s were not just darker, but they just overall sounded wrong. It was an accident, that capacitor wasn't supposed to be there. If you have a first batch one, get rid of that capacitor and it will sound the way it was meant to)
@Wagoo3 жыл бұрын
@@auxorion John Bowen's busy with the Solaris, no time for bingo :P
The original P5 outshines the REV4 overall. There is something wrong with the modern one, it's missing some bite, some mids that the vintage one has. The REV4 is too polished and not raw enough to match the vintage one. Sorry Sequential but you've missed the boat if your goal was to create a clone.
@jibberish0027 күн бұрын
First, there’s nothing “wrong” with the Rev4. It has a different eq profile. It is less pronounced in the mids and highs. It is darker, but has significantly more low end. The Rev3’s default envelope shapes are a bit snappier and more aggressive, but you can achieve this manually on the Rev4 by adjusting the envelope shape. Second, the Rev4 is not a clone no more than the Rev3 is a clone of the Rev2. It’s not a reissue either, it is a revision, just like the others before it. Dave wanted to make a stable, reliable prophet with modern upgrades. The only significant loss is the absence of unpredictable components contributing to movement and variation in the sound, but that’s the trade off for reliability.
