In Serbia, it is normal to live with my parents and grandparents in the house. In my house we have seven family members. My grandparents also lived in the same house. We younger people take care of the elderly and the youngest in the house. Of course we all work and help .In Serbia, the economy is not strong and that is why we all stick together. In Serbia, the family always comes first.

The word Kosovo means “Land of the Blackbird” in Serbia. Every other geographical location there is named in Serbian as well, that should give you the logical conclusion who has lived in those lands for centuries. Kosovo and Metohija is considered the “cradle of Serbian civilization” and “Serbian holly land”. Kosovo is where Serbians fought Ottomans who were marching to conquer Europe. A lot of Serbian blood has been shed trough the centuries to protect those lands because they’re sacred to the Serbian people. A larger population of Albanians didn’t really live there until after WW2. In the 90s, when Yugoslavia was in a civil war and it was falling apart, Albanians living in Kosovo took up arms and started killing and banishing the Serbian population, a lot of Serbians were kidnapped and taken to the infamous “yellow house” in Albania were they were cut open for organs to be sold on the black market. Albanians started claiming that Kosovo and Metohija is their rightful land and that they started destroying and burning down medieval Serbian churches and monasteries to erase all traces of Serbian life there for centuries (there are videos of it on KZbin, for anyone interested) that even UNESCO had to intervene and the under their protection the last 4 non-destroyed Serbian Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo because they’re a thousand years old heritage that shouldn’t disappear. So, yeah, I think it’s pretty clear why Serbians will never recognize Kosovo as independent aka Albanian. What Jerusalem is to Jewish people, Kosovo is to Serbian people. 🙂

Cool video! Sounds a lot like the Asian culture in Serbia. We're not require to leave the house until 21, 23.. We also don't leave our parents or grandparents in some home. They took care of us, it will be our time to take care of them in return. No shaming, nothing, it's in our cultures. We are not big into gifts as well, whatever the occasion is, usually is about food & getting together that is far more important. I mean in terms of generality. Well, we Asians aren't tall in general, not that kind of tall. That is probably the obvious exception. :-) Cheers from Malaysia

Thank you. The focus on gift giving instead of enjoying time together makes people less happy here. People in general here look to what others have and compare themselves. When they have less, they feel inferior. Hopefully, the focus of other countries is more on what matters most. Health and fun. Money is important but what's the point of having money if you arent happy. Serbia or Serbian Orthodox church to be exact uses Julian calendar and that's why Christmas is on January 7th and new years or Orthodox new years is on 14th of January. But that calendar is only used for religious purposes in our every day life we use same calendar as rest of the world. And that is not the case only for Serbia many Orthodox churches use Julian calendar so Christmas is on January the 7th in Serbia, Montenegro, Serbian part of Bosnia, Russia, Georgia...

Doing an essay in the States, comparing my Ethiopian origin country to Serbia. I attend a Serbian Orthodox Church which is where my interest originates, but I am loving this video! Average height for Men is actually more, because if you don't include older generations. Men up to 40 are over 6 feet and average is 182-183cm. Younger generations up to 20-25 are even taller. I'm 6 4 and many teenagers are taller then me.

I travel 750km in one way many times in year, pack my wife and children to go to my parents in serbia to do everything around the house, cut grass, fix everything, cut wood for winter, buy everything in shop what they need, fix car, change tyres. They lived their working life to give every penny to me and my bro, so we do everything we can to make their life easier. That is in our culture. I feel that average height in Belgrade at least is even greater. I'm 191cm, so around 6'3'' and I often times feel quite average when I'm walking around the city, it's not like there's a ton of people taller than me, but the majority either matches my height or are a couple centimeters taller, about 5 or 6.

I am from Sweden. In general, up here in the northern Europe, the parents kicks out their 18 y/o kids, or when the kid thinkes it is old enough to take care of it self it moves away, sometimes as early as 10. Yeah, as a Serb all of these were accurate! My grandma frequently visits her mother to take care of her and talk to her (about every day). When my older sister announced she wanted to move out at the age of eighteen, my parents (and i) couldnt really understand why, because it would simply make much more logical sense for her to stay here for a bit longer. We were also not taught much about Kosovo and i usually see many graffiti of "Kosovo je Srbija" (kosovo is serbia). The difference between your and our Christmas is because we celebrate it as it meant to be, the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Christ. So for Orthodox Serbian Christmas you say "Hristos se rodi" meaning "Christ is born" and the other one will answer "Vaistinu se rodi" meaning "He is truly born".

@@evanramino1700 We make it for Christmas and our family Saint day (Slava), usually made by our grandmothers or mothers as it symbolizes the body of Christ. The baker of the bread puts a coin inside and who ever gets the coin the following year will be prosperous for him/her. There is lot to tell for our Christmas like fasting, dried fruits, dried tree branches etc.. you must come here to experience.

In Serbia Santa Clause is connected with the New Year. Orthodox Serbs celebrate Xmas by old calendar (in January 7th) and correctly Xmas for them is family gathering with traditional values and customs - Burning the oak branch instead of decorating coniferous tree (that is reserved for new year which comes before Xmas in Serbia)

Serbs keep it spiritual, religious and personal. there is xmas wheat - wheat grains are wetted on st nicolas, some 2 weeks before xmas, by xmas wheat seedlings are nice and green so you light a candle in the middle of it. we call it bozicno zito. it the anticipation of xmas people organize oak burning. google for paljenje badnjaka. next to bonfire we share cooked wine or brandy and even fish stew or roast meat. there are many more traditional customs for xmas here. but Easter with colored eggs is nice too. this year is on May the first. if you will be here you will enjoy

My grandfather once told me a story about a son who has build a new house for his young family and his parents have helped a lot around it.His parents were old and as all old people had that smell, poor eyesight and bladder control. He and his wife discussed what to do with new clean house and old parents ,they decided to place them in barn and to feed them fom one big old pot.Old parents cried but what could they do... so their son and oldest grandson started preparing the barn and upon placing pot in it grandson asked father Dad we should decide if this pot will be sufficient for you, mother and grandparents if they are still alive when I become a parent.

The thing that blew me away the most was reading about how life was like in Yugoslavia. WOW! I was blown away. Things just seemed so great. Actually no, that is Serbia, bosnian serbs are average 1,85 tall, montenegrin serbs are also round that number, which does make them 2nd in europe or sometimes even first(depends on the source). This has to do with genetics and ancesutors of serbs on the certain territory.

Someone has probably answered this by now, but just in case they haven’t… Serbia is an Orthodox nation, so they go by the Orthodox, or Julian, calendar vs the Gregorian calendar that most nations use. That means that some major holidays like Christmas, New Years, and Easter will fall on different days. There are times when Easter will fall on the same day, but Christmas is always January 7 and New Year’s January 14. Basically the differing calendars come from the Great Schism of 1054 when the Catholic and Orthodox churches split, and they chose not to adopt the new Gregorian calendar.

Same with us Arabs especially lavent Arabs. We all live and stay with our parents till we get narrated and we take care of everyone even if we move abroad, we send a lot of money back home. Mostly every country that’s not western follow these pure traditions. Plus, Serbians celebrate Christmas on Jan the 7th cuz their orthodox just like some of the Arab orthodox back home. Most Arab countries have indigenous arab Jews, orthodox arab Christians and arab Catholics, and then arab Muslims that Islam came down as the last religion for all the Arabs which some of them reverted to Islam. I must say you got it right. Since I am Serb I could go over the Kosovo issue for hours, but I guess the majority of comments have done that already. I can add that staying with parents is not exclusive to Serbs, it happens a lot in southern Europe. Italians even have a word for it: mammone!

We are majority Orthodox Christian, we use different calendar - Gregorian calendar, Orthodox Christmas falls on January 7th. We also have new year that falls usually around 13th or 14th of January.

The reason Christmas falls on january 7th is that our orthodox church still uses the old medival calendar (julian calendar i think) which lags behind 13 days behind the new Gregorian one because of inaccuracies in measurements at the time, that's why a lot of holidays are off by 13 days

Regarding our Orthodox Christmas that falls on the 7th of January... it's because of the old Christian calendar that all Orthodox Christians celebrate. However, even though we don't exchange gifts during our Christmas (we do on New Year's Eve instead), we Serbs are the only culture/people that treat "the first guest that pays us a visit" in the morning of Christmas Day like a KING or QUEEN.....we give them breakfast (food to go), drink (alcohol), clothes, in some cases even money LoL...this has to do with the Jesus's birth and the Kings that traveled to see the baby Jesus. Another interesting fact about Serbia and the Culture.....the original meaning of the Cross is ancestry, your grandparents and relatives that are not alive anymore ....the Orthodox Cross has two smaller crossing sections besides the big in the middle ( bottom is a little bit slanted upwards...it means the beginning of everyone's life on Earth; and at the top, which is straight across....it means the end of life on Earth) Also many Serbs feel that family is more important than anything in the world....the 4 symbols of C(fire symbols)around the Cross in our Crest(Heraldry)and the flag, represent just that "Family is very important, and the fire/warmth in the family house has to be always ON" Cheers 🍻

In Serbia like in most orthodox Christian countries the older Julian calendar is used by the Orthodox Church - that is why Christmas is on the 7th January in Katholik and Protestant confession they use the Gregorian calendar that basicallly took out 2 weeks so not movable feasts move 2 weeks in advance

We use the old calendar, that is why it is all 14 days later than the new calendar. Example: Easter 14 days later than yours / Christmas 14 days later than yours / That is why we are celebrating two new years/ 01.01 we call it the calendar new year, and 14.01 according to the old calendar

Celebrating Christmas on January 7 is just a matter of the calendar. The current (world) is Gregorian, it is a new calendar (search the net about it). The Serbian Orthodox Church uses the old Julian calendar (search on the net), which is late compared to the Gregorian! After 1000 years, the difference is 14 days. According to the Julian calendar, January 7 is actually December 25 😊!!!

It's Jan 7 by the Gregorian calendar which makes it Dec 25th by the Julian calendar. We celebrate our religious dates based on the days of the Julian calendar. That's why we have another New Years day on Jan 14th. And presents are for kids for New Year and not Christmas.
