I am Serbian and currently residing in Canada. In Canada, the cost of housing has increased severely over the last 10 years with the price of the average home reaching over $800,000 and the cost of a one bedroom apartments hovering around $2,000 a month in larger urban centres. This makes Serbia look like an extremely appealing country to purchase property in. My husband and I currently looking into purchasing a property in Serbia in the next few years.

The nominal value of properties in Serbia is still way lower than in Canada. If you have a Canadian income to buy in Serbia is an easy choice. The problem is when you have a Canadian income in Canada, or a Serbian income in Serbia.

GDP is the wrong measure for comparing the wealth of nations. The average Serbian lives a similar life to the average Briton. While in Britain people drive newer cars and take more foreign holidays, they do so on credit. The average Serbian family had very little debt. The average Briton has thousands of pounds of debt, some have tens of thousands of pounds of debt. A very large minority of Britons cannot live on their salaries alone, they use their credit cards every month just to survive. If you look at GDP figures, the West looks far richer than the rest of the world. If however you dig a bit deeper, things are not so clear.

I always wanted to buy or create my vacation home in Serbia far outside the city. I'll have to finish my studies and earn a good income first

Depends on how you look at it. Got Western salary? Its very affordable for the most part. Got Serbian salary? Good luck soldier

Its better investement to buy in Belgrade then in Calgary due to way lower tax and condo fees
@traveleconomics7 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. Prices are up in Belgrade because things are going bad in other countries. In Calgary, they are up fueled by immigration. Calgary doubled its population in 10 years, while Belgrade growth rate is 0.20% per year. It is hard to say which one is better (or worse) as an investment, but it is not an easy choice, both involve a huge amount of risk. I'd choose Calgary nevertheless, because of climate change problems and lower geopolitical risk.

Why is it money laundering if someone from abroad like that normal Canadian couple from the comments, wants to buy a property in Serbia?
