I believe the main difference is that Americans and Serbians don't have the same point of view on "dating". As I understand Americans have hockups which is just sex, and I guess it's the same here, they have relationships, which is again same here. But we for the most part don't have casual relationships in the sense that it's ok to date different people at the same time. For the most part in Serbia the relationship starts from the first kiss. So yes if someone tries to pick you up at the bar that's because he is not interested in dating, we just don't have the same concept of that. If we take a girl on a date that we like, the dating lasts just until our first kiss, at which point we either enter into a relationship or we don't. If you even hit on a girl while dating another that is considered as cheating
@VodeniZeka2 жыл бұрын
So yes we are maybe blunt, but why would anyone wanna waste anyone's time if we are interested only in sex. But if you go on a date with someone and after that first kiss, if a Serbian men calls you again then he considers himself in a committed relationship. So there really isn't a middle ground in Serbia, you either want sex or relationship. And we believe that is the honest way

Bluntness? My mom once told me that when she lived in Serbia, it was like a perpetual stream of feedback coming from everybody. When she came to the US, by comparison, she said it was like a constant awkward silence or uncomfortable numbness.

Diner is more cultural thing too, I've been living in Canada since high school when I moved here with my parents, and one thing in beginning that have drive me crazy and I was finding to be really rude is how people here like to eat and talk, and sometimes they will be even talking with their mouths full. When I got married here with Canadian, and we start living together to her diner was time when you seat with your family, socialize and talk about your day. In Serbia we don't do that, when you eat you eat and no-one is talking. Families will be talking and socializing after diner is finished. In Serbia growing up as a kid your parents or grandparents will yell at you if you talk during the lunch or diner, so that is something deeply rooted in our culture. I was explaining that to my wife that when we socialize we will have coffee or drink but not full meal, so if guy in Serbia takes you for a drink or coffee it means he really wants to get to know you, because eating and talking is no go in Serbia. I know my wife and i had to overcome that, and was bumpy but she accepted that I'm not talking when I'm having my meal.

This is so true. I felt this part needs a better explanation. My wife is not from Serbia and we had so many conversations about why I don't like to eat and talk . This was interesting listening as Serbian woman living in USA for the past 10 years. What I miss from dating Serbs: 1) tall/look - in USA, it's a miracle seeing someone at list my size (5.9) and I miss having 6ft+ and big man, generally when it comes to attractiveness, Serbs are much better; 2) Blunt/direct approach - hating games and sugarcoating as a Serbian woman I'm very much as my male counterparts: straightforward to the blunt point, which occasionally scare away my American dates. What I like more with an American man, compared to Serbs, less obsessive with gender roles, which to me as ambitious woman is much better and they are much more supportive business wise.

Well in some points you are completely correct while in other completely wrong. For example - we prefer drinks over dinner for first date because it is more casual (and I cannot already know what kind of food, restourants you like before actually I get to know you right?), then this part where guys approached you in described way, I first time heard for that kind of approach, so really cannot be shown as a rule. You mentioned men heaving issue when woman earns more then a man, I know a lot of happy couples in this kind of situations, and I wouldn't mind that my wife earns more then me, at the end in marriege there is not "mine" and "yours", it is "ours", so more for her more for me and vice versa. Yes I prefer more feminine women, otherwise I would be gay, but feminine doesn't mean weak, my wife is strong, very beaitiful and very smart, also we both earn good money (same amount), yet we agreed on splitting jobs in home so we have both more time - she does cooking, I do cleaning,... and some things we do together. And correct we are familly oriented because familly is all you have behind you in tough times so somehow it is normal thing. But I think there are a lot of familly oriented men in USA too, just depends who you run into :) wish you all the best ;)

must say, as a half serbian woman who grew up in bosnia, i find you experiences a bit surprising. (culturally, i don't think there are major differences between the 2 countries, if any. my mum is slovenian and brother in law croatian, and culture-wise it's all the same, except that slovenians are more 'serious' and workoholics - which is not good for health.) i agree, for example, that serbians are direct and blant in communication - and so am i; but i actually find them quite warm and sensitive, often vulnerable, but always kind, gentle, highly respectful and decent. it may be that my many 'circles' (from air-force and heavy-metal to farmers and intellectuals and engineers), were different to yours. as for man being 'patriarchal' - i guess so are woman. we just want to spoil our boys as mothers and as wives. (my dad used to say to me, if my dog male dog was begging for food while on diet: 'give him the food - he's a male'. i would laugh my head off.) both of my parents taught my sister and i that we are absolutely equal to everyone else - so i never in my life felt that i was somehow inferior to anyone else, male or female. i think that is true for all women in that region: we are equal - we don't have to prove it to anyone.

I was born and raised in Serbia, moved to US 10 years ago when I was 21. I agree, everyone smokes in Serbia and it’s disgusting. Really going overboard with it. 2. Guys will take you out for a drink, due to financial situation in Serbia it’s cultural now that they take you out for a drink instead of a restaurant. So if they are not sure you guys are going to be moving forward they won’t really go out to spend their money. 3rd, men in Serbia do think women from western culture are easier, like women from America. Which I can confirm it is true by far, as in Serbia women really have to worry about what and who are they doing it with, it’s a small place if people find out there are no chances of her getting married. But in that case men in Serbia have a complete wrong image about American girls, yes much easier to get to sleep with you but as you said you need to vibe together and in order to move it forward too fast they need to make you comfortable etc, not just like let’s go fck, that’s disrespectful and they don’t get it-they think it’s so easy. It’s easy but it’s not like that. Agree Serbs are more traditional, they expect their women to do house work l, not quite scared or not a fan of women dominating career wise or anything like that but they will still expect you to do house work, for an example the way life is setup in Serbia, men has many gender specific roles they have to do, let’s say before winter most of Serbia uses firewood to keep the house warm, men chop it out out it away and keep the fire going, building stuff, protecting, house/yard work. So men who do that they do not expect to go in the house after working outside all day, and be like let me make lunch, they expect it waiting on them. For an example in America I need heat I just turn the thermostat on and gas does it’s thing it’s delivered to my house and I don’t have to do anything, most of manly gender specific roles here in US died out, that’s why I feel like women feel injustice when they have to still keep doing house work and men be just sitting and laying around doing nothing. In Serbia women have no problem doing their thing.
@LorenCognita2 жыл бұрын
I agree with this! Too many American men take the role of women but want women to be submissive. What woman in their right mind would be submissive to a lady-boy? My boyfriend is Serbian and he’s very masculine, it’s very attractive. I hope you guys don’t ever change, avoid Western media lol

To be honest I prefere the Serbian way. Talk a little and then go straight to the point, in terms of boy meets girl in a bar. Of course you can do that American sweet talk, make you feel comfortable. But in the end, the end result is identical. They want to have some "🤪😋🙈🥳". I think the Serb men just don't have a lot of fake "sweet filters" to attach to themselves. In the end is all about learn to read people. Direct approach doesn't necessarily mean a creepy guy. Sweet talk doesn't necessarily mean a good guy. 😎

As a Serbian man,I must say you are spot on,but I also must elaborate on why it is like that.Serbian men are like that because Serbian women trained them to be like that. Being assertive,blunt,and rarely emotional is what Serbian women crave.Im more of an American type of guy the way you say it,and had more luck with western girls,and less luck with girls here because of that.I look good,but I can't count how many times girls found me boring for being too talkative,romantic and complex/nice. It's especially bad if you are emotional and more opened up and progressive,because most of our girls consider that a weakness.Most of girls will say otherwise,but they all lie,or lie to them selves.Every Serbian girl will forget everything she represents if she meets strong,tall,assertive,blunt,barely talkative,rarely emotional guy that openes up harder than a tank door. In a way Serbian women(most of them) are halting Serbian men progress,because they encourage that sort of behaviour.A lot of guys fake this behaviour just to get the girl,and start acting like they truly are when they get married.Also a lot of guys that act like that naturally have bull mentality and are as blunt as a rock.I made a terrible mistake when i was younger and was more opened up and talkative.I failed so hard,and for so long with women until i learned to not act like that.But im in my 30s now and i really don't care to act like anything at all. The point is that Serbian womens mind and emotions are driven by deep sexual desire.And it all comes from the fact that many of people from rural areas have come to live in Serbian cities(especially Belgrade) in late 20th and early 21st century,and are still coming.They brought their mentality with them and in a way halted the progress of minds.It doesn't mean city people are less patriotic as i surely am as an ex soldier,it means they are way less open to change because in their village: "something was done in some way for centuries and it must be like that always"(usualy an old grandma says that).

Muscles are for aesthetics and not health lol, most of them eat trash and drink a lot, plus as you said smoke most of the time. I’m an American woman who lives in Arizona and dated a Serbian man, and he was the biggest narcissist I’ve ever encountered. After dating him for a few months, I grew curious as to why he never invited me to his “luxurious Scottsdale Loft condominium” that he always bragged about, so I did a simple background check and found out he lived in a very dangerous part of the valley in a 1,200 SF home with his parents, his 43 yr old brother, and his 6 yr old son, amongst a few other ridiculous lies like about playing football in college (he never played football in college, because he NEVER went to college). I decided his excuse for these lies could slide (stupid mistake) because shortly after, he moved himself and his son into my apartment without me even realizing it until I got a USPS address change form in my mailbox one day. Anyway, I dated him for over three years; I tried many times to leave, so he started locking me in the house…I won’t go into much more; way too traumatic 😣 But know I will never date a Serbian man ever again, and I mean ever! 😖.

Why American women are so obsessed with the dinner on first date? What's wrong with booze or coffee? That can be romantic af too ,if you are dealing with the romantic guy. Maybe you value romance the wrong way. Me paying the dinner for you is not necessarily act of romance ,an act kindness maybe. I like to be focused on conversation without munchin on something. Dinner is fine if we are already in relationship,on the first date, we are getting to know each other so what is wrong with making things simple? So if guy is not taking you out for dinner, that means he is not romantic? Girl if someone turn your around 180 degrees on the first date I asure you you wouldn't mind if munchin on peanuts . Millions of other ways for the guy to be romantic and not only with his wallet Serbs are different, you have to earn trust, and after all romance goes both ways ❤ and you are in Serbia for a long time now ,you should be familiar with financial struggles, or date a criminal or big night club owner ,than you will have dinner every time.

i really appreciate your insights on serbian men and dating. i am serbian and have been living abroad and all over the world for 12 years now and my husband is american. i agree with some things that you said, but i never thought that majority of serbian men were particularly fit or sporty (watching soccer games and going to kladionica doesn’t count). i rarely come to serbia these days but when i do, sadly people seem to be getting more and more overweight there, including men. maybe it’s because i’ve spent most of my time in socal and am very involved in crossfit and hiking communities but i almost wanna say that american men take better care of themselves. but as you pointed out, america is so diverse and really depends where you are. you go deep south, an everybody and their mother seems to be obese. also smoking freaking sucks. as a non-smoker who wanted to have social life, going out in belgrade was always a hell. it was a deal breaker for me for dating as well. coming back from a night out would usually involve red eyes, stuff nose, stinky hair and clothes that are ready for heavy duty program 🤮

To nije nista lose, vec jednostavno cinjenica.

Many different nationalities wound up in America for many reasons including serbians. There are communities of serbians in America also. However there are,far more Anglo and western European men in the U S because of the eugenics that were promoted agaibst Slavic people during the Jim crow laws Era when the English Anglo Saxon and Nordic dominated U S congress passed racist laws against us causing our immigration to become illegal. Far past ww11 we were not part of U S,society even though we have whole communities there. We have no real representation in American society because we were not part of the upper crust of American society. We were labeled an inferior race and had many of the grunt jobs in America's factories , foundries dries , steel mills and mines. We were not even considered part of the true white race during the times of eugenics , Jim crow and the Sicilian lynchings through out the south. Some Slavic people were even killed by the kkk in the northern labor movements . We remain systemically racistly omitted from the American public school books , collage course books and curriculums. We remain under represented in politics and demonized in the movie industries of both the U S and England. So the American society that is promoted as mainstream America has its roots in the English Anglo identity with a huge input from German society in the north and the French and Spanish influences of Louisiana territories . Of course the southwest is heavily influenced my the Spanish/Mexican influences as well. In Louisiana there us an area of Cajun influence , however say that area us shrinking . Places like Milwaukee are very germanic , even though there are many Slavic people there including serbians around the Chicago/Milwaukee areas. Many slovenian communities in cleaveland /Pittsburgh etc . The list goes on . However the lack of representation for the many different Slavic peoples is so absent in the projected "American culture" . The narrative is still very Anglo centric in its out put . Thank you for the representation you bring forth. Now if we could get the American colleges to stop chopping off the Balkan peninsula in the whole chapters on things like ww11 that they write for our high schoolers that would be helpful . How about them serbians working with the Tuskegee airmen in the biggest rescue from behind enemy lines in modern history of 500 (white) U S airmen that had been shot down by the occupying German forces ? That's absent from the American "education" books also.
