that's so nice to see this kind of handshake from both players, i think Justine have so much to learn from such amazing players like Kim and Serena.

The only thing I hated about matches back in the day was that they didn't keep the score on the TV like they do now. Watching these highlights are awesome but I would have loved to see the score as they play.

Thank you! I have been looking for this match for 8-9 years. I almost gave up. What I remember most about this match was that Serena outplayed Kim, who didn't play poorly. Serena was measured and meticulous. She was pretty fresh off the Serena Slam, and she was all offense. I love how Serena's game has evolved the past 12 years, but she does get into these defensive habits and it makes me miss 2003 Serena.

I agree..sometimes she is too defensive these days. And think because of that, she makes things harder for herself on court.

Sven R Serena closed the court down a lot more aggressively back then... and footwork [ the intricate steps required to create her base and preparation required for her long, extended backswings ] was way, way more precise. see all the preparation at 3.48 finishing with high* inside-out forehand winner. Because her footwork around the ball has degraded, Serena frequently has to compromise when unloading on certain shots... -- this is most conspicuous in her nervy matches at the grand slam tournaments. The feet (quite literally) stop moving around the ball. As a tennis player, the first part of your game that goes, when you become constrained nerves / nervous tension, is {footwork around the ball}. Serena topped moving in the second set of the Australian Open final this year and very nearly cost her the set. But Serena has improved a lot in other ways... she became a way better volleyer, with more feel and instinct at / around the net. She also continually added more variation on the serve. -- and Lindsay Davenport had already asserted [on multiple occasions] that Serena had the best serve (and by a distance) in women's tennis back in 1999. So this serve just became ever more precise... * [above] shoulder height.

I agree with some of your points but overall Serena is a much better player now then back in 2003. Sometimes Serena does get too defensive in the early rounds of the Slams but overall Serena's a smarter player now, more patient, better volleyer & her serve is much better, if that's possible. Serena has better placement, power is still there if not More powerful today. All I want 2 see more of from Serena is better footwork, smaller quick steps, more aggressive at net & start her matches with more intensity & more killer attitude in the early rounds so she doesn't get in trouble with these tough 3 set matches with lower ranked opponents she shouldn't be getting in trouble with. If she can pick up her early round intensity, I don't see any problem with Serena tying Steffi's 22 Slams This Year & surpassing Steffi next year, obviously. So, I guess what I'm saying is, I really like Serena's chances at this year's calendar Grand Slam. I hope she's still hungry at making more history. I hope she wants it as much as I feel it's definitely within her grasp. Serena, stay focused, stay hungry or hungrier for the rest of 2015.
@christopherrourke970110 жыл бұрын
Hmmm i do not view Serena as being ' more powerful ' now..... Occasionally more explosive on the return ( though as Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis say, Serena was always an extremely damaging and destructive returner, capable of hitting outright winners off good *first serves*) . Serena's 'fastest first serve' speeds are faster than they were in 2002 - 2003. The difference in [average] and [fastest] second serve speed is marginal. But off the ground, Serena doesn't hit harder... if anything, she takes a lot of pace *off*. She rarely clips the 90 mph mark now... but in the Wimbledon final, 2004 (when the BBC was using Hawk-Eye technology / data, nearly two years before the formal introduction of HawkEye, at Miami 2006) Serena hit several forehands measured at + 90mph [ the fastest grounstroke, from memory, was struck at 94mph]. To put this into perspective, Sharapova's fastest groundstroke winners in the match were struck in the 70 - 75 mph range. As an aside, [ from Lindsay Davenport's perspective ] Serena wasn't going for her shots, attacking the ball [in 2004], as she had been in the years previously, 1999 - 2003. At Dubai, 2009 Serena struck the fastest Serena hit the fastest groundstroke recorded in the Hawk-Eye era, a forehand measured at 96mph [ see note 1, below]. Again, she very rarely gets close to these speeds today, in 2015. At Wimbledon 2007, 2008, 2009 she frequently passed the 90mph mark, off the ground. The only other women to do this were Sania Mirza [ 2005. see note 2 ], Justine Henin [ 2005, 2007 ], Nadia Petrova [ 2008. see note 3 ] and Venus Williams [ 2005, 2007 - 2009 ]. In those years (as today) Maria Sharapova's winning shots/winners typically fall in the 65 - 80 mph range, as did Clijsters' and Dementieva's and these players are (were) perceived as being 'powerful' etc. etc. Dinara Safina [ 2008 - 2009 ] frequently hit in the 80 - 90 mph range but did not hit a ground shot measured at +90mph, on the courts where Hawk-Eye was being used. Madison Keys recorded both the highest [mean] average and fastest groundstroke speed(s) at Melbourne this, year, Serena placed at second. 1. A forehand measured at 154 kmh = 96 mph in her quarter-final match against Ana Ivanovic in Dubai, on the 19th February 2009. 2. Sania Mirza - 94 mph (versus Svetlana Kuznetsova) Wimbledon, 23rd June 2005 3. Nadia Petrova - 94 mph (versus Elena Dementieva) Wimbledon, 1st July 2008

Christopher Rourke Serena hits with more spin these days. That's why she made the switch from natural gut to luxilon strings back 2012. She can hit hard, but she has more control of her shots, so she's not spraying a ton of errors.

Challenge lol? Kim got thrashed in this match, and she only beat Serena twice, her matches with Azarenka are fun to watch
@orbitalwarrior8 жыл бұрын
True, but Kim however came very close in '99 UO and especially '03 AO. I think it's a shame that they didn't play more matches because of Kim's retirement, Kim is the only one to beat both Venus and Serena at the same tournament twice.
@stevennieves83086 жыл бұрын
Inediblehulk Of course. Every player's more fun to watch when they're playing someone that can challenge them. That goes w/o saying.

Inediblehulk The thing I've noticed about Serena Williams is players can challenge her more when she's coming back from her injuries & been away from the game for a long time. When Serena's fit & on her game, NO ONE can or has ever been able to challenge her. NO ONE.

I would love it if there is any way that full ESPN broadcasts could be put on another website where we could download them! Thanks for the highlights:)

I liked how Serena used to really explode more into the ball when she hit her forehand. She got her whole body into the shot. Most of the time she just seems to muscle her shots. she really needs to go back to this so it'll be easier for her to absorb and create pace
@roter139 жыл бұрын
olaraay her forehand was so much better than it is now
@olaraay9 жыл бұрын
AnonymousArtist976 i think she lost confidence in her forehand starting in 2004... under pressure it just broke down i.e. wimbledon 2004 finals and then in 2007 against henin especially at the french and US open she has changed it to add more topspin and this creates some good angles too. There are times where she will hit through it with no lasso but she doesn't do that all the time. She reminds me of Gulbis, both had deadly forehands back in the day but has been altered to get more consistency
@roter139 жыл бұрын
+AnonymousArtist976 now she does the nadal forehand a little too much instead of hitting through the ball like she does here
@stevennieves83087 жыл бұрын
roter13 Well, overall I think Serena's improved her forehand, her entire game, strategy & even her mentality. The Serena Williams now from the last 6-7 years is much better than the Serena Williams of 1999-2004. Which was before Serena went in & out of the game. Mainly because of her injuries & depression from her sister's murder during 2004-2007.
