Illya Kuryakin what arrogance are you talking about? She still had a lot to prove at that time and it was her 1st WTA title. I just saw a mom supporting her daughter in a place where everybody was against her because she was playing against a local girl (which is normal). Serena is the greatest female athlete and her results are undeniable.
@arnitaomeara76584 жыл бұрын
@Illya Kuryakin they were not arrogant just had a lot of people against them and didn't kiss an asses or take anyone $hit. I lot of the girls hated them when they first came on tour and probably would have been a wash out if they didn't have each other to tour with. White people saw them as arrogant, blacks saw them as confident which they were.

@Illya Kuryakin In the 2019 poll she is number one. What does Federer and Lavar have to do with the WTA?
@aydenanthony65083 жыл бұрын
@Ilya Kuryakin first of all, Polls of popularity don't determine who is the greatest, stats do. If we had to go with popularity, then you should probs do a poll on serena williams in Australia, cause Americans hate their own people for some reason 🙄. And Federer has absolutely nothing to do with WTA, based on Federer and Serena's resumè in their respective fields, that's an entirely different convo.
@aydenanthony65083 жыл бұрын
@Ilya Kuryakin don't watch boxing, can't agree, but I think Muhammad Ali is great in a completely different way, based on what he achieved inside and out of the ring 🤷🏽♂️. However, when speaking about tennis, no, I believe most tennis fans tend to make their deductions and assessment based off actual stats, facts and achievements.

Though it's true we are lacking some new blood, you must remember that the "Age Eligibility" rules changed right around the time of Serena's entrance into the WTA. I don't remember exactly when the age restriction changed, but it was around the mid/late 90's. Players are no longer allowed to play a lot of tournaments between the ages of 14 and 18. For example, players between 14 and 15 are only allowed to play 8 ITF tourneys a year and they can't be big ones for a lot of money. It increases each year as a player gets to 18. SO... They don't get the experience they once did earlier on and thus... don't win titles until they are older. That's why you don't see 14 or 15 year olds like Jennifer Capriati or Monica Seles playing in Grand Slams anymore.

I remember that year! It was the most painful tournament S. Williams ever faced in her life. The French public was rude, Mauresmo was the sweetheart of the country, and that little black (!!!) , a girl (!!), an American (!!!!!} pretended to grab the trophy ? NO WAY. The French were already struggling to forget that it was a mixed-coloured guy who won Roland Garros for them in the 80s, so they really hoped Mauresmo would "bring it back home" at last. Lmao. What is funny is that all these women S.W competed against , almost all of them went on retirement ! Mauresmo was criticized to be man alike and today, S. Williams !!! It was during that tournament that Hingis was booed by the French crowd ( she allegedly commented on Mauresmo being a lesbian " No wonder i fell like playing against a man". Yeah! It was somehow a funny year for those great players (Mauresmo, Williams, Hingis etc).
