It took me a long time to understand and follow the instructions to actually thread the machine in order. I kept breaking thread and I’d just rethread the broken thread. I no longer hate my serger, and I hope it no longer hates me.

Same! This was a huge source of frustration for me when I first started.

Mine is upper looper, lower looper, left needle, right needle. If I do it any other way, it will break. Every time.

My other tip is use a blue dental floss threader to thread the loopers!

Great introduction. I chose the Babylock vibrant to learn how to use a serger. I hope you add more to this topic with the different serger stitches and maybe some specialty serger feet that are common between most brands.

If the average cost of a serger is $300 (which is more than i paid for my 20 year old sewing machine) i'm out of my depth. If i were a professional seamstress i'd maybe take the plunge. It is nice, however, to finally understand the purpose of a serger. Thanks for your enlightening video. It's back to the zigzag feature on my sewing machine for me!

I hate my serger. I honestly dont feel like i can control it no matter what i try. I've watched a million videos and i get it in principle but i just dont seem to be able to control it to just sew straight. Using the seam guides are useless as you can't really line up the edge accurately as the machine is so fast even when you are going slow. I feel so much more control over using a sewing machine but the serger is just crazy and i want to be good at it 😢
