I was a PGA club pro in my twenties, but in order to become one you need to pass a Performance Aptitude Test which involves playing 2 rounds in one day and beating a particular score. I practiced so hard for it, and took it so seriously, I found myself throwing clubs like this. Then one day I just decided to never let bad shots get me angry again, and my scores dropped overnight. I wound up passing the test on my first try You just need to take a split second to tell yourself to relax, and that a bad golf shot is totally insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The game is a lot more fun too.

I was being a little facetious to illustrate my point. Indeed he has had a few shinning moments with 8 career wins including a major, plus 16 wins on the European tour. But when you think about what his and the public’s expectations were when he had the great duel with Tiger in the PGA Championship in ‘99 his career has been a bit of a disappointment. He was supposed to be a real challenge to Tiger. But Tiger has ten times as many tour wins and nearly triple his European tour wins. Yes Sergio has been able to make a good living with a golf club in his hands but he is generally not well liked because of his constant sniveling about Tiger and his frequent displays of poor sportsmanship as illustrated in this posting.

He’s a child. His temper cost him in the match play against Kuchar. He screwed up the tap in then got mad at Matt for it. Dealing with your anger is part of golf, he couldn’t do it, it cost him the hole and he’s got nobody to blame but himself.

Neil c - Concessions are never assumed, Sergio lost his head and missed a tap in to halve the hole.These guys are professionals playing for a lot of money. Players aren’t allowed to just waive the rules because Sergio screwed up. Sergio had two simple choices, wait for the concession or just make the tap-in. You don’t get to miss a putt then decide later that you made it.

Neil c - the fact is, the putt was not conceded, Sergio gave Matt no time to concede it and once a stroke is made you can’t go back, you can only concede the next stroke. If Matt had lied and insisted that he had conceded the putt in the split second before Sergio backhanded it, he might have convinced the rules officials, but why? A player is not allowed to break the rules to help his opponent and he’s under no obligation to do it. In fact, it might have gotten him DQ’d. Again, why? These are professionals, they know the rules and they have to play within the rules. Even the stupid ones.

Them Rory who blew a 10 stroke lead in his first major on the final day. That could have ruined his career but instead he won the following 2 majors and has more wins since. I was playing golf in Castellón Spain, at his home club. His father was the pro there and I think he bought it. It’s nothing special, anyone can play there but at breakfast in the morning, he came over to our table to say hello. He knew the local guy were playing with. Yeah I have zero need to brag, this is my only brush with a celebrity. So when I tell you he was a really nice guy who then again said hello and asked me about my round later, I promise you that he’s not the villain you’d think he was. We all know folks with anger and composure problems so I say give him a break, he’s clearly working with a trait you’re either born with or not. I give him the benefit of the doubt that all humans are entitled to. Unless he is unkind to widows and orphans, who are we to judge.

When I was a kid my dad was really into golf. The one and only professional golf game I went to was a Skins game in Palm Springs and Sergio Garcia hit the ball into the crowd and nailed me of all people. I commented a year ago, I will say more. He played at a Spanish local course as a junior, national team event, and there was only one guy in the team who could stand his attitude, plus the image he left behind is still remembered today on some of those courses, an overprotective father and a clearly spoiled attitude. I'd love to be able to say otherwise.
