Hi Warren. I am a 47-year-old architect in Kansas City who discovered Brasil 77 while a freshman in college (1983). I picked up a copy of Vintage 74 at a thrift store in Lawrence, KS and was hooked from the first track. Between the wonderful arrangements and Bonnie Bowden's voice, I couldn't get enough. Today, Bonnie is my friend. Your music from the 70s and 80s is timeless. I still listen often.

Warren..always remember how much you influenced music! Sergio Mendes introduced Brasilian music to the U.S. in a more explosive way..hit wise..than the earlier Tom Jobim collaboration with Getz with another Bossa Nova daddy..Joao Gilberto. Sergio's crossover to a more pop and orchestrated sound..did the trick! Bravo for Sergio and all his incredible musicians like Oscar and you! The singers..various..Lani..Gracinha..Karen..Marietta..Janet..Bonnie..Carol...etc. exude the magic that IS Brasil! TY

When playing my cassettes in the late 70s and early 80s then, cds in later years, I never knew the singers...now because of these videos, my guesses were having answers as to who sang them in groups or solos...’though everyone aged/ matured, my liking of their music becomes more now than ever; hoping that in future concerts, all present and these previous singers will be present that would be my greatest wish...who’s gonna forget “waiting for love” and “the trouble with hello is goodbye” & “ put a little love away” by bonnie ...”bridges” & “so many stars”as well as “the waters of march” by marietta or carol...”pretty world & “like a lover” by lani & karen...”i believe” & never gonna let you go by liza & marietta/liza & joe plus “what do we mean to each other” those are classic songs that define the music of the disco 70s & pop alternative 80s...this discofied song is one of their best, too

It wasn't. It was from 1979. Sergio kept adding 11's to the name, presumably to make the band appear more current. Of course, the lineup was always changing, as well (particularly after the departure of Lani Hall)

Muito balanço , seu estilo de sempre. S.Mendes é nossa referência musical ao EUA, pois se radicou em terras americanas, mais nunca esqueceu suas raízes. Faz falta, ainda mais em pleno 2020 onde esqueçeram o que é música. Show esse cara.

Great stuff Warren. SM and his music, specially those women chorus sound always took me to a place that I never knew where it was (I guess it was a Brazil I've never met) but nevertheless always had me dreaming about the best was yet to come in my life. then I met my wife, a beautiful tall Portorican and we had this beautiful daughter, which both love Brazilian music, and I realized that my place was exactly that place this music had me dreaming about and my girls (wife and daughter) were those dream women which voices I heard through these tunes. love you bass lines too. now, I am an amateur bassist wannabe I bossa nova guitar fan.

My main instrument with Sergio was a 60/70s Fender Jazz fretless I had converted with an ebony fingerboard. The other was a fretless Travis Bean (aluminum neck). Great sound but would break strings (sometimes 2) in the middle of a concert. I still use the Fender sometimes but mostly a Godin Fretless. Thanks for asking! w

Both eras were great. I love his music from the 60s but I equally love his late 70s disco era and all in between. I'm not too crazy about his 80s material but he made a great comeback in 1992 with Brasilero. I saw him in concert in San Francisco in 2004 - before he went rap. Even met the guy and he signed an 8track and open reel tape of his earlier albums.
