Fun fact: Using a leg a lamb as a murder weapon likely comes from Roald Dahl’s short story “Lamb to slaughter” Where a suburban house wife murders her husband when he asks for the a divorce with a frozen leg of lamb, and then cooks and feeds it to detectives later, effectively destroying the murder weapon. Very in theme for a John waters movie

That and, on a somewhat more serious note, a LOT of criminals (yes, even some of those amongst the most depraved) love their mamas to the point where not only it can be one of their only positive traits and they can make a point of not comitting crime on Mother's Day for their sake, matricide is often frowned upon in the criminal underworld for those exact reasons...to put it mildly as prisons have shown us.

I remember living in Baltimore when this was filmed, and I was in the 4th grade. My friend's dad (Joshua Shoemaker) had a single line in the movie as a reporter at Serial Mom's trial- I remember going to my friend's house and hearing her dad practice his line over and over. I haven't seen the movie in ages, so I might not have it exactly right, but I think it was something like "Mr Sutfin, how does your wife feel?".

What's funnier about Kathleen Turner's casting in this film is that five years later, she would go on to star in Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides as the religious, domineering Mrs. Lisbon, who exerts control her daughters' lives and keeps them confined to their quiet Michigan suburb. In the same decade, Turner stars in two films that both take digs at domestic jobs and suburban life.

John Waters is definitely an excellent example of an “acquired taste”, but one that you become firmly hooked on if you give his films a shot and enjoy his willingness to follow his own rules and his creative originality. Serial Mom is arguably one of the best “mainstream” films he’s done over the years, and I’d dare say that it ranks up there with Polyester as my favorite film from him. He was recently released from the hospital following an accident, so I hope he makes a speedy recovery. The world just wouldn’t be the same without the world’s most delightful filth elder. ☺️

Glad to see this movie getting love! It's is one of my favorite comedies, and it's a perfect "access" film for people interested in John Waters. It's a good neutral ground between his earlier exploitation films like _Pink Flamingos,_ and his more mainstream work with films like _Hairspray._ It's twisted enough to scratch that demented "itch," but not super over-the-top.
