Haha "You'd think whoever painted it hadn't heard of etch primer! ... That was me ... and I hadn't." Love it.

The needle guns certainly do use a lot of air,, but , there's a good reason for that you may not have realised,, it is to give you time to have a nice cup of tea, while waiting for the tank to refill!! Sorry to say but that welding round the bulkhead is commonly known as call bird sh*te lol. I got to a stage similar to yours once on an old landy,, the original chassis was quite rusted through all over, luckily I located another that was in superb condition so on getting it I blasted it back to bare metal and painted/sprayed it inside and out with a paint called Galvafroid,, or some very similar name,, it is cold galvanising,,, then when fully hardened I coated it with Hammerite smooth, and rebuilt my landy on the new chassis! Love the vids, keep em coming..

I have used a similar product called Zinga on the gate I recently restored. I have already done the bulkhead for the next landy project, once all the rot was removed and new metal let in, I had it hot dip galvanised - should last forever now!

You could do with a soundproof enclosure for your air compressors. I built one for mine and its quite comfortable to be in the same small garage with it running. I've just bought a Clark needle gun for my Series 3. Glad to see it works.

Things have changed a bit since that video, the compressors live with the generators in an underground bunker now! The needle gun did that chassis and then most of a lorry chassis and the box that went on the back of it, before expiring just before the end of the job. For what it cost I thought that was fair enough (and indeed bought another one).

Nice videos sir, from what I learned over the years of repairing the chassis of my vehicules, before welding, apply a coat of "weld-thru" primer (zinc based) , and I found an awesome product to fight off the rust that is called "por-15".. I thought it might help for futur project

The 'needleriser' is just the same as a 'scabler' except it's a 100 times smaller. They're used on concrete surfaces prior to a new pour along side. They 'scabble' the concrete just the same as your needlerizer cleans the metal. I used one on 12 hour shifts at the Dartford Tunnel a few years back... back breaking work! I've a photo of me sitting on my Dads Series 1a...taken 55yrs ago!
@maximusironthumper6 жыл бұрын
I don't envy you that job. I was only doing brief stints on the gun due to the vibrations, don't think I'd enjoy a 10minute shift let alone 12 hours!

Hi just wanted to say it was a pleasure to watch your videos got some good advice on the restoration of the landrover series 2 as ive just started one myself once again thanks and keep the videos coming

Having spent many days needlegunning and also sand blasting old armoured vehicles I am not sure which I prefer ! The trouble with sand blasting is that with the helmet on the replaceable film over the visor soon clouds over, due to the abrasion of the sand, then it is difficult to see if you have done a good job or not. On the vibration of the needle gun, I have used several, and the more expensive and much heavier guns vibrate less in your hand and do a quicker job. But obviously for occasional work the less expensive gun is a sensible buy. They all use lots of air !

I did an entire muir Hill dumper chassis with the very same needle scaler. I spent more time waiting for air than cleaning. Not a bad tool in all.

This is extremely useful to me now as I just bought a 1968 Series 2a Safari today, thats in poor condition, to restore. The main MOT failure is the suspension mounts front and rear, plus a knackered gearbox. I can see this well in your video so watchig these all a second time! When completed it will become my 'camper; for finding land! bed in the back, camping stove, solar panels and a rainwater catchment tank! Many Thanks I owe you a few beers! Do you know if you can use the Discovery diesel in these to replace the old 2.4 please, wondering if its an easy update?

Yes fitting the Disco engine is an easy swap more so the earlier 200tdi. Google Glencoyne Engineering and Steve Parkers Landrovers for info and conversion kits. Lots of info on the series 2 forum as well.

I was gonna get a 1967 Vespa, now I want one of these! I used to tow fishing boats out of the North Sea with a Landrover, I just forgot how good they were.

Late to the party but just realised how much your big air tank looks like R2D2. A paint job is in order methinks.

Regarding the make of needle gun,I would have thought that bugger wouldn't have needed as much air as that.They are on every high st,catering for diy'ers and pros alike,and most folk wouldn't be running a huge tank,like yours,or 2 in tandem.Seems a bit remiss of the manufacturer.Bet you they don't sell many when everyone finds out the air consumption

What is that lovely yellow dumping contraption?

A Crusader from Rob Roy Dumpers. A 1 ton dumper with hydraulic tip powered by a Lister ST1. Possibly the most reliable vehicle I own!

Though Land Rover is an Indian owned company now, it did not bring in the old Defender to India. What a pity. There are some older imported examples, which are still in demand inspite of being petrol guzzlers.

There is one mistake there, there is no think metal on the chassis. Only thin, delicate scrap metal

Would have been much easier to sandblast.

What are you trying to do man? The chassis should be fully stripped and revealed, judging from the front end damage. This is not a restoration but a bodge-up!
@maximusironthumper7 жыл бұрын
Don't worry, front end damage was confined to the wing and all corrosion on the chassis has been carefully cut out and replaced with good steel. Thanks for watching!

think hes only doing a part restoration and not a full one.
