Good video, I learnt what floating axles are on a live axle. Very bad practice to use a concrete floor as an anvil, use a large solid block of a hard wood as a surface for knocking machined parts together under their own weight or use the block as a sold clean none slip surface to rest the parts on and knock together with a soft faced hammer head, (nylon or copper face are ok) then the damage is imparted onto the soft hammer not the engineered parts. Even a few layers of news paper laid out or taped down to the concrete are better than working directly on concrete floor where you might transfer dirt and grit into your parts assembly.

Great video, I thought the upgade also converted the inside spline to 24 also, but this is much easier. Any chance you remember the size and offset of the rims? They look great.
@EricaMTB
@EricaMTB 3 жыл бұрын
The original upgrade to 24 spline included different side gears for 24 spline. But they required machining the diff carrier and made the carriers weak.

A quick google search for TDA Land Rovers and you can get them off there or there is Design Engineering which make a lot of aftermarket kit. Cheers Geoff

Hi Matt. This video was done a while ago, though at the time they were around the $700 mark AUD, that included the up-rated drive flanges. Cheers Geoff

Can you provide a link for the axle manufacturer? I searched and can't find anything. Thank you.

For picking up some of these axles please click on the link below Max and it will take you to TDA's website. I would advise calling them or emailing them about the heavy duty axles as they are a specialized item. tickelsdiscoveryauto.com.au/

I’m lucky enough to have a Salisbury axle in mine, but as a consideration, I’d suggest for discussion, that as you have strengthened the axle, the next weakness up the drive train would be the thing to break instead. Therefore, would it not be better for the axle to snap, rather than the diff, or something further up the line if you are out and about?

47606odin,, interesting thought. I wonder if Land Rover designed / engineered for this very reason?
@seriouslyseriesaustralia
@seriouslyseriesaustralia 6 жыл бұрын
Hi 47606odin. Thank for the comment and yes you make a very interesting point and one which we should look at discussing on a video down the track. There are a number of points within Land Rover drivetrain where failure can occur, however, in my experience, I have found that the coarse 10 spline axles to be the key point of weakness, the diff, transfer case and layshaft are quite dual provided they are pushed far beyond there engineered limits. A example of this can be seen in the 1966 documentary called "Wheel Across the Wilderness" were four indivduals use a modfied 107inch Series 1 with a 2.6 litre (which was espiecally fitted to the Land Rover) and they were towing a two tonne trailer through the sad dunes of the Simpson Desert. In this extreme case they broken five differentials. Cheers Geoff Seriously Series

The Rover axels are a very weak link.. The track on the rear of your Land rover appears wider, than a normal... is it a wider Detender axel, hence the finer Splines and maybe 4 pinion diff... Still think the Dana/Salisbury Axels are the best upgrade for the LR, but great seeing your dedication and hard work. T

Hi Tony. Well spotted and good work. We run off set rims which gives the Landy the appearance that it wider then it really is, in short we are running series length axles. Many thanks for your kind words Tony and great to hear you are enjoying our videos. Cheers Geoff

+/- 13 Years ago we where driving and my fathers car started overheating it was the thermostat so my father removed it the only thing we had with us to use for a gasket was a milk carton my father made a gasket out of that put that on and it did not leek it did mot leak later on either so my father left it like that until he replaced the thermostat much much later.

You obviously do not do mechanical work for a living. Grease on gaskets and oil leaks are synonymous. If they had good gasket sealants around in the days when they used to recommend grease on gaskets, they would have used the sealants. I fix cars for a living. People do not like oil leaks. Times have moved on. You may get away with this on Land Rover axle but the other gaskets in the vehicle will leak if you use grease, when things get hot the grease thins out and runs away. Think about it.

At 15 mins , Its the Hub not stub axle, stub axles are on the front, and they are stubby ie short. Everything you said in the first 15 mins could have been said in FIVE !!!!!!!
