he did...recap guy didnt explained it too well but david told ethan that there have been other attempts to recreate civilization and he told the truth to these groups right away. those that didnt kill themselves in sorrow went violent in a world without order and started to kill eachother (like in the walking dead). thats why david decided to bet on the next generation and started to endoctrinate the children and tell the truth to only a few selected, while keeping the ones they deem not fit in an authoritarian state.

They weren't told what was out there. The town people thought they had just been trapped by some manic. While the Dr. was kind of crazy, he did protect the people. He didn't think they could handle the truth so he ruled by fear in order to protect them. If they had known it was dangerous to be outside the city wall, the people would have accepted that the town is the safest place to be. The point of this story, is that truth can be damaging, but also not disclosing the truth, is very dangerous because we see groups rise up and rebel at any cost necessary because they want to get back home and be not be trapped. If they had known what year it was, how they ended up there, didn't live in a surveillance state, and had some basic freedoms and knowledge of their situation they would have been understanding and not tried to destroy the only thing protecting them from the outside. The ending shows how a group of brainwashed kids, still follows the same rules that led them to where they were in the first place. They haven't learned anything and are doomed to repeat the same mistakes made by the doctor. Eventually, there will be another group of people that will try to escape, or kill anyone they think is hiding the truth or ruling over them without any due process. It's human nature to want to know the truth, and be set free. Limiting what people can do in this town will only cause issues down the road. The main character sacrificing himself, to save a few people turned out to be the wrong move. He was needed to continue what he started. He could have turned things around by telling people the truth, and removing the camera's and microphones. By giving people just a bit of freedom, truth, and hope this town would be very different. Dictator rule can only last so long before people revolt. I remember watching this series when it first came out, and being disappointed how it ended. Now that I am older, and re-watched it thanks to this great channel I understand more about how it ended like it did. Another season would have been great, just to see what Ben could of done to turn the town around and prevent it from being ruled by fear and lies. Eventually, a town dominated by those things will eventually face unrest and people will die and get hurt. That would just be a story similar to the one we just watched, but with different characters and different challenges. Still it's an interesting concept and one that should have be explored further as this show had potential to be more than just the 2 seasons it was. Definitely could have gone 1 or 2 more seasons and maybe get a happy ending, or see the town totally destroyed. Either way, would have been fitting to have a more satisfying ending.

For a story set in a small town that is the last human settlement in far future still harboring "normal" human life, they sure for reason want everybody to just life in a secret filled fantasy instead of just telling and showing the thruth. As far as I understand, David and his team built the town way back and consistently abducted people and stored them in hibernation. After a certain number of people were reached, David and his team themselves also went into hibernation for 2000 years and activated the town after the apocalypse had already taken place.

I guess they did in fact capture him from a car crash way back then and his wife and son a week after, they were then all put in hibernation for 2000 years and for some reason they are being taken out at different times, maybe to replace the dead people that was killed for trying to escape seeing as no one knows what's happening and just know they're trapped there and get killed if they question anything.
