Yes. The self defense industry is a definite scam. I have changed the way I explain my Kickboxing/MMA club as a direct result of listening to you. I once thought i taught self defense especially, when I was a Hapkido instructor, but I really didn’t even then. So nowadays when asked,“ I heard that training at your club is very good for self defense. Can I come and train with you all?” I respond by saying, “We don’t teach self defense. We move toward our opponent, not away. We train to engage. We teach fighting skills, we lift weights, stretch, and work on endurance, to make you a better fighter. These skill sets may have some self defense applications, but they are not self defense. It is offense. It is training to fight. Is that what you want? Answers vary. Thanks for the video.

self-de·fense /ˌself dəˈfens,ˌself dēˈfens/ noun the defense of one's person or interests, especially through the use of physical force, which is permitted in certain cases as an answer to a charge of violent crime. "he claimed self-defense in the attempted murder charge" "Self-defense is a countermeasure that involves defending the health and well-being of oneself from harm. The use of the right of self-defense as a legal justification for the use of force in times of danger is available in many jurisdictions." While self-defense is a legal term, and people who know a lot about it and/or fighting understand why the term is being misused. Languages that are living have words that change meaning or gain new meanings all the time. The way the word "self defense" is used by either layman or experts, people all know what is being talked about. What needs to change is that people must learn that it involves: soft skills, getting fit and athletic, training to sprint/Parkour, training to *really* be able to fight and not just learning bullshido or "cheap" shots. Learning that all that is going to take a lot of money, time, work, hard work, sweat and pain. Most don't really want to do all that however, they like the easy, convenient, pretty lie.

@@HeartlessKnave I agree with what I perceive to be the thrust of your post, it really isn't rocket science, everyone knows what "self defense" means, it means being able to survive a random physical altercation, and while it may involve a lot of things like you suggest, I think we shouldn't get too carried away and pretend it's either 100% training to be a professional combat athlete or 0% and don't bother

Most self defense entrepreneurs seem to be scams or con-artists bc people are using what theyre taught on the wrong people, unless theyve been lied to. Engageing is a response to a threat or offense, with an offense, but is defensive to your safety/well-being.

Vega is the best SF character by a long shot. Either he's the only guy allowed to wear face protection and and a weapon in an unarmed fighting tournament, or he's the only guy that studied the rules and took advantage of them, so he's a real crafty fighter that would make all the "he attacked during the fist bump, he's not a real warrior" crowd mad.

I've seen a few competent instructors that have students wait a short while before sparring, basically enough so that they understand things like control and pulling punches so that they can be a safe training partner for other students. However, getting someone to that relatively low barrier to entry doesn't actually take that long with good instruction, provided that they're first introduced to light contact sparring.

Woody isn't REALLY made of wood. Only his head, hands, and boots are made of a solid material (possibly wood, but considering his mid-fifties origin, possibly an early plastic). His body is mostly cotton filled cloth. Which makes him pretty soft and weak, but on the other hand, he'd DOMINATE at BJJ.

This question about sport gunfight isn't very stupid actually - there was a sport of duelling with pistols, it was once olympic sport, fighters wore masks and other protection, and bullets were wax or something. Pretty interesting thing! This thing about magic unable to pass through gloves was hilarious! :D Another thing about shouting names of techniques: kendo fencers do that! They scream not before the strike thou, but meanwhile, or even meanwhile the strike connects. It is one of several qualities needed to score a point, screaming name of the opening you strikes is, in this sport, embodiment of your intention - that the strike wasn't accidental, but purposeful. Another - I believe there is historical case of ninjas vs samurais, it was some castle that was taken from inside by ninjas dressed up as monks.

One stupid question coming right up for you Ransey:) In the Star Trek Deep Space 9 episode "Take me Out to the Holosuite", Captain Sisko has the following conversation with his girlfriend Kasidy: Captain Sisko: [telling the story of him and Solok to Kasidy] We were in the same class at the academy. One weekend, I was with some friends in a bar off campus, The Launching Pad, when Solok came in with a group of Vulcan cadets. Said they were doing research on 'illogical human bonding rituals'. We didn't take too kindly to that. Kasidy Yates:And you'd had a few drinks. Captain Sisko: One or two. Well, we got into a debate and Solok said that Vulcans were naturally superior to Humans and other 'emotionally handicapped species'. Of course, I took the opposite position. So there I am, drunk and debating logic versus emotion with a smug and very sober Vulcan. Well, to make a long story short, I decided that the best way to prove that Humans were every bit the equal of Vulcans was to challenge him to a wrestling match. Kasidy Yates: Wrestling? Captain Sisko: All I wanted to do was wipe that arrogant look off his face so with everyone watching, in the heat of the moment, I challenged him. Kasidy Yates:And? Captain Sisko:I ended up in the infirmary with a separated shoulder, two cracked ribs and a very bruised ego. Kasidy Yates:[laughing] Oh Ben! I don't mean to laugh but what did you expect? A Vulcan has three times the strength of a human. Captain Sisko:[whistles] And they're faster too. But you're right - I got what I deserved. And if it had ended right there it would've been fine. But it didn't. Solok took every opportunity to remind me about our match. He used to point me out whenever I walked across the campus. In fact, he wrote 5 psychology papers about our match. I became the living embodiment of why Vulcans were inherently superior to Humans. Kasidy Yates:You don't mean he was gloating? A Vulcan? Captain Sisko:That's exactly what I mean. He may have hidden it beneath that Vulcan calm of his, but he loved every minute of it. And you'd think that once we graduated it would have stopped. But it didn't. Over the years, Solok wrote over a dozen papers on Vulcan/Human comparative profiles, and at the beginning of every paper is an analysis of that damn wrestling match. Kasidy Yates:And now he comes to your station and announces that he's put together a baseball team. Captain Sisko:Solok doesn't care about baseball. All he wants to do is rub it in my nose on more time but this time he's using my game. My game! My qustion is, if Captain Sisko came to you, stating that there was going to be a rematch between him and Solok and he needed to win it to prove Solok wrong about humans being inferior to Vulcans, and asked you to train him for that match. What training would you give Sisko so that he could defeat his Vulcan nemesis and what techniques would you teach him specifically for that match and what other advice would you give to him about winning this fight? Starfleet would give you unlimited resources to make sure that Sisko wins this fight, and you have full control over his training. Sisko is already shown to be a tough fighter in the series, shown on screen to be capable of defeating even Klingons in hand-to-hand combat. The honour of the human race would rest in your hands and training methods.

I know you're not asking me, but let me provide you with in answer just in case the coach is busy: We need to examine the premise. DS9 is the most boring thing ever invented by mankind and truly trashy. So I think the answer should be: Teach him to fly through the room stiff as a board with his fist infront of his head to punch his opponent (I think that literally happens in the series) and with the power of low budget special effects and crappy writing, he will win the fight. Any sort of clever, intelligent, realistic, exciting or non-crappy way would just not work in that "universe"

Ramsey MIGHT know about these old coin-op video games from the 1980s, with myself started playing them in 1976 with Pong and Space War. I can put in ONE quarter and beat the original Double Dragon AND Double Dragon II The Revenge alone straight to the end. I can play and beat the original Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2 alone on ONE quarter. I can play and beat the original Golden Axe alone on ONE quarter. I can play and beat Gladiator (Arcade 1986) alone on ONE quarter. I can play and beat Vendetta Arcade alone on ONE quarter. While I can get pretty far in Final Fight, I could never beat the game alone or with others without pumping in the quarters. My twitch skills, awareness and timing were developed this way and carried over into MA training esp with dirty Boxing which is the the timing and positioning Ramsey talks about in a fight. My friends (back then) got sick and tired sparring with me as I could easily anticipate their next move, side step, duck and find openings to hit much like chess. I was not popular with the coin arcade owners either 🙂

The most implausible thing about this story is that you beat the original arcade Mortal Kombat 2, let alone with one quarter- the original arcade release of that game was rigged to give the player 3 winnable fights to start off with, and then every fight after that, the computer controlled character would react to the button inputs before the character sprites moved. It was such a heavy flaw in the gameplay designed with the intention to eat quarters from eager players. It’s possible to game the system, but most people didn’t figure out how until well after the era of the internet. So, assuming you’re telling the truth, how many attempts did it take before you could beat MK2 with one quarter?

MK2 had patterns with jump kicks beck and forth along with baiting the CPU opponent to do something based on your character’s move. Yeah, it took me maybe 20 to 30x before I figured it out.

Fighters are taught to engage, self defense is teaching how to disengage by creating an ever larger distance. If a woman asks me about self defense, she gets a heavy dose of sprint training, and getting the conditioning to sustain a sprint and not breaking form, to escape, since there is no prize to win.

Here's a Stupid Question (TM): What if Drunken Master Style had an entire league, with tournaments that required you to actually be super drunk in order to be allowed to step into the ring? Like, the referee has a Breathalizer and checks your breath at the start! ;-)

Hey Coach, just thought of a dumb question that is of (at least arguably) some use: what martial art would you suggest for defending oneself from dogs - say 30-60 kg - while causing the least possible harm? Wrestling and BJJ is handy but Boxing (also Handfighting) does help with the “not getting bitten”… granted, I’ve learned that you can bloodchoke with one hand pretty easily… the question would stand for predator evasion or defense tho. Kinda rambling, so - have a good one, bro. E: you grab the collar (or the skin at the base of the neck, if absolutely necessary) with a deathgrip and twist until you’re not getting mauled anymore. Then you let go, unless you’re a monster.

I've had this one stirring in the back of my mind for a bit. During class my BJJ instructor told us back when he was training at some MMA fighters camp Kurt Angle visited the gym he was at and no one was able to take him down. For some odd reason this surprised a lot of people and met with some standard comments from martial arts practitioners about pro-wrestlers even though Kurt is an Olympic gold medalist and even after Brock Lesnar, Bobby Lashley, and others becoming fighters. Seems a lot of people doing martial arts have a hard time thinking pro-wrestlers can have actual fight skills, even back in the day Iron Sheik helped with the US Olympic team, Dr. Death was the only man to pin Dan Severn in collegiate wrestling, the Steiners were high level college wrestlers with Scott having beaten Don Frye. Which gets me to the question, say back in the day Vince McMahon or Ted Turner got nervous about the UFC starting up and told one of their best shooters to enter and they managed to win; what do you think the future of MMA would have been?

Of anyone except Royce had won UFC 1, then Art Davie and Rorion Gracie would have done their best to burry the footage and try again. Kurt Angle would have been a phenomenal choice for that tournament. If Vince had the kind of for sight that Art and Rorion had, he would have staged his own UFC style tournament featuring the straight shooters of pro wrestling vs the martial arts nerds of America. That would have been ground breaking. It would immediately bring the pro wrestling audience over to MMA, and cause way more controversy and outrage in the TMA community than BJJ did- because at least BJJ had the same kind of packaging as traditional martial arts with the uniforms and belts and the Asian sounding name.

@@RamseyDewey That's a cool way to think about how it could have been taken over but I was also wondering if such a thing happened in a way it was more to protect pro-wrestling. A way to try to convince the public their guys are the best and toughest. Say those high level shooters were paired against some Sabaki Challange or ISKA fighters maybe even a boxer and they won all of them. Could it have stopped the interest in the west or would it have evolved anyway following the route Japanese MMA evolved from pro-wrestling? How would it have effected what people chose to train in?
