Check out Car Issues for what we did with this car, but to summarize, it is a flood salvage car with an engine that needs a Vanos rebuild, the trans is making noise, every light on, and then you'll see how horrific it looks underneath. My last drive up the car was screaming to let it die, the wizard obliged.

This is what every 10 year old winter-driven vehicle looks like here in the rust belt. Most of our scrap yards don't bother with vehicles over ten years. Not enough of them left on the roads to keep the junked ones around to sell parts. Straight to the crusher they go.

Now retired I was involved with the development of the E36 around 1989/90 . The bean counters horrified me to be honest especially for the cheap interior.The engines were great of course and I was in body engineering to meet anticipated safety laws.They did well in the in house safety tests, NCAP would come along several years later and we had to concentrate on offset protection which we did build into E34 E32.Lower paint quality on E36 and while this rust is unusual,they were 70% hot dip galvanised as opposed to 100% for E38 E39.Profits were very good on these cars and a good well maintained one is worth having,the best being 325i 328i.

As a bmw owner. I need those cams. These cars can be parted out and a killing can be made. Those seats are worth 700-1500$. The cams are worth 500-700$. The heads are sought after. The rims are 500-700$. Mirrors are worth 250-300$. All of the M control arms and brakes are worth a good chunk. The axles are worth money. Depending on the year that 3.23LSD is worth 500-700$.

It's really sad that someone let this car get this bad. I have had three of these cars in my life time and currently own one, the first one was in our family for 15 years and we only had to replace a radiator, was sold 12 years ago and is still daily driven to this day. These cars are extremely reliable when kept up, its examples like these that give older BMW's a bad name. This is my favorite car in the world and probably the only thing I don't agree with the Wizard on. But yeah that thing was trashed. Once the underside of these cars start to get rusty they go really quickly.
@jwenting
@jwenting 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. It's not the car, it the people owning them as they get older who trash them and turn them into clunkers. A lot of 3 series BMWs here last 20-30 years or more and still going strong because they're well maintained by people who love their cars, not junked by teenagers who don't give a darn because they got it from dad from a used car lot when they got their drivers license and neither maintain it nor drive it properly. Which is sadly the lot of a lot of BMWs in the US and a lot of hot hatches in Europe.

As he said in a previous video it is more about the kind of owners used BMWs have than the cars themselves. People who want a BMW as a mere status symbol but don't cars enough about cars to maintain them and keep them in running order. Just run it into the ground and buy another one from the used lot. Not uncommon with luxury cars sadly as those with the money to actually maintain one typically buy new.

I think a lot of the interior issues are down to BMW starting to use biodegradable adhesives in the mid 90's per new environmental rules that were put in place in Europe. Needless to say, some of their first formulations didn't really stand up to the test of time.

@@kevinbarry71 In reality, it wasn't so much that its was penny pinching but rather dollar clutching. the irratic shifts mentioned on the tranny is caused by high mileage, worn manual not automatic transmission shift pins. The manual shift pins usually start to become "hard to shift" especially when cold around 200k miles. Each gear has it's own individual "pin". Once the tranny is removed the replacement of the pins isn't difficult at all. If anyone is interested in a brand new complete set (every gear) of e36 M3 shift pins I have a brand new set, never opened and ready to ship. Leave your contact info. here.

With all the safety regulations I've never understood why stainless steel (or non-corrosive) brake and fuel lines are not required. I had rusty break lines blow out three separate times on my 99 Oldsmobile. I honestly can not understand why they aren't required to make both brake lines and exhaust systems out of non corossive materials. I'd honestly pay significantly extra for a package that was engineered for use in the rust belt. Stainless exhaust system, aluminum body panels, proper high quality undercoating. It's frustrating living where they use extreme amounts of salt and watching your cara get eaten away.

Buick & Holden's with there 3800's Honda with their work horse D15B2's Chevrolet with their ol' LS1 Toyotawith their modest but milage eater RZ's (Hilux) Such engine's are often neglected of any maintenance, even oil changes yet over the years many have passed 500,000K's and ones being maintained have pushed past the million K mark.. Maybe that is among the best BMW has to offer, but it's still quite a leap to the most reliable ones out there! Also then there's the question of cost if maintenance.. which can be a big factor depending on country. By all means love your BMW's - I don't doubt yours would be a hell of a car to cruise in!! & Let's hope BMW of now has a return to it's (pure) form in the future!!

Some cities/counties/states have emissions inspection. Some areas inspect for rust/wear, and all states inspect for title rebuild after salvage state on title when a vehicle is fixed. I live in an area with NO annual inspection for any reason except for the aforementioned title state change. I have seen cars on the road rhat have been t-boned, rear ended, and rolled with partially smashed front and/or rear glass. Law enforcement can cite for operating an unsafe vehicle and, iifc, can impound a vehicle if they deem it unsafe for conditions such as bald tires and such. America is extremely lax when it comes to used vehicle safety.
