No reason not to use them, just don't leave them on your headstock forever, as many people seem to do. They look silly and unprofessional anyway, so I tend to take them off right after tuning :) Having said that, the best tuner is still my ear, so whenever possible I use that.

Brace yourselfs, it's the lazy idiot that doesn't take it off the guitar is the problem,I've used the snark on 10 guitars no damage because I put it on to tune then I take it off 😮😂

It's not the Snark it's the user. Don't blame the tool, blame the tool that uses the tool. Don't leave any clip on tuner on your guitar. I've played Gibsons for 20 yrs and used Snarks for at least 12 years. Never had a problem, but I also don't leave it on the headstock. More so I don't think those marks are from a tuner, they look like Capo bites. From someone clipping a Capo to the headstock.

How in the world does a rubber contact tuner, pull and scratch lacquer off the head? Is it left in a humid area, causing it to stick to the paint? It's not like the clamp is made with upholstery tacks. How? Really, how? I've had one on my Taylor since it was new, and i don't even have discoloration, let alone damage.
@TheLexluthier2 ай бұрын
Rubber interacts with nitrocellulose lacquer. Those cheap guitar stands with surgical tubing on them have messed up a lot of lacquer finished guitars.
@bettertvreceptionwithfoilf71002 ай бұрын
@@TheLexluthier Interesting. So then, the material used is damaging to instruments? Nice. I know there are many different types of compounds these days, many that will not react to paints. Neoprene, is chemical resistant in some uses. i read, that folks had damage to Nitro finishes as well. This seems like a simple fix for Snark. I have left my snark on my Taylor 214 now for 5 years, never taking it off until i use it on another guitar. Not even slight fading. I don't have lacquer though.

If you wrap a rubber band around the clip (back where your thumb goes) it will reduce the spring tension and lessen the pressure on the finish. I realize this is probably in part due to the laquer finish but those clip tuners can mess up poly too.

This is grim, but I've seen a worse Snark injury on a Martin D18. Just a huge dark stain where the Snark was left on the guitar all the timeI don't know whether there some sort of reaction between the rubber and the matte finish. Either way, it was impossible to buff out and none of my usual cleaners would work. Of course, there's nothing there to fill or refinish - it's a permanent dark shadow across that part of the headstock. Sadly, it's exactly where the embossed decal is so anything aggressive would have ruined that. Any suggestions, I'd be interested, but it's my friend's guitar and he doesn't even seem concerned ans still keeps the Snark there all the time. Odd.

Over time those Snark tuners destroy the nitro finish on Gibson headstocks - and probably any guitar with a shiny finished headstock. I stopped using clip-on tuners a long time ago, but a lot of people use them. My "beater" guitar is an early 00's Epiphone acoustic; the headstock finish is all jacked up from having Snarks and capos stuck to it on and off for years.
