lolrus555 If you ask me, it wasn't catastrophic at all. The game does kinda discard a lot of the newer stuff (focus on bog standard spunkgargleweewee guns, urban scenery, drab faded color palette) not too far in in favor of sheer fun-oriented level design, and I'd say for the best, but even if Croteam didn't really know what to do with the "modern" touches, they tried, and it doesn't really get in the way as much as Yahtzee made it seem.

After playing the 1st and 2nd encounter, I can easily say BFE's inferior to the both of them, but I still found it to be a solid entry in the series and a great introduction all around for newcomers looking to get into the Serious Sam franchise. Still, here's hoping Planet Badass comes out this year.

Sam had shades in TFE (The First Encounter). He lost them in later games in the chronology for some reason. When he CQC's spiders, he's supposed to be stomping them. Also, the CQC may not be slow, but there's so many enemies coming at you so quickly that you're better off just switching to the sledge hammer for melee attacks.

the small spiders he stomps, but the larger ones, it's more like he grabs the two bony sides of its "skull" and pulls forward really hard, breaking the exoskeleton around its head, or something. (and he does this while yelling like an opera singer that smokes too much).

***** First off SS3 lives up to the older games pretty much 95% of the game. Thief was consistent with it's bastardization of the franchise all throughout, it didn't start of slow and heat up afterwards like SS3 did. SS3 lived up to what the older games had that was great, thief did not.....how is thief relevant to this anyway? The verdict for both games compared to their predecessors were completely different.

I just beat the game and I feel like the best part of the game was the last level. Hoards upon hoards of aliens come at you and you have to mow them down with your weapons while an amazing soundtrack plays in the background. I'd say it's even more fun when you have a couple of friends with you so that way it's more chaotic and not frustratingly difficult.

Try going online with the 18-player co-op. They add in hundreds more enemies in that canyon so you fight alongside 17 minigun-wielding warriors against more enemies than you can count. It's amazing to say the least.

I suggest playing through on hard mode from the off. It's quite a challenge that way, and I just got to the jetpack bit about ten minutes ago. Awesome game if you let it be what it wants to be: catharsis. It really comes into its own when you have multiple rocket-launching enemies firing off barrages at you and you've basically got to think on your feet to dodge between them all without getting speared by those cloppy skeletons or the giant minotaurs or spiders. The gun-wielding soldiers were very annoying for me, too. Thankfully they die in one shot. When it's quiet, I no longer hear silence. I hear a faint "AAAAAAAAAH!" cry and look around to see those headless suicide bombers. Great fun. :-)

I was used to suiciding enemies mainly from strategy games (like the Infested Terrans in StarCraft or Red Alert 2's Libyan Demo Truck), but to be one person in an open field with 20 of those fuckers running at you while Kleer Skeletons threw chain-balls and leaped at you was both terrifying and exciting at the same time :|

The vast majority of the accusations against Serious Sam 3 are not really about Serious Sam 3. They are about what Serious Sam 3 parodies while avoiding the most annoying flaws of the parodied stuff. Serious Sam 3 is the clown that mocks bad first-person shooters, not one of those bad first-person shooters. As a first-person shooter and third-person shooter itself, Serious Sam 3 is excellent software.

Psycho Gamer SS2 was pretty much a parody of a parody. Serious Sam BFE/TFE/TSE parodied traditional arcade-style FPS games, while Serious Sam 2 just decided to parody that. Still a fun game if you don't take it too seriously.

Got a demo of one of the very first Serious Sams in a software magazine in the early 90's. I think it was about 4 levels mid-game. I've never had so much fun with a demo before or since. Mayhem that makes you feel like an FPS Jedi when you complete a level. Brilliant games; all of them, in their own right.

I actually liked this one. The gunplay is very satisfying and the auto-aim feature makes things much more fast paced and much less frustrating. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a very fun game overall. Fast and furious.

Because it is natural progression for stronger enemies to appear over time, if your starting weapon starts off insanely powerful and becomes weaker over time, it would be a good way to disguise the progression of enemy strength as the game moves forward.

The game is actually a ton of fun like the other Serious games, and even more fun when playing with a friend...or 15 since it does that. It actually does split screen co-op on the PC version. And the one thing yahtzee missed is if you think the world is too gray you can use a variety of filters or even just up the color in the options

The shotguns felt pretty underpowered to me excluding the Devastator (which the game SAYS is a shotgun even though it functions like a grenade launcher) The coach gun was ok for taking on small groups of Kleers but against larger enemy groups and types they just sorta sucked...

Honestly, I couldn't really manage to care for this one. I mean it was still more enjoyable than most modern shooters but after 3 games full of such memorable setpieces as a fighting a swarm of acid-blooded exploding frogs in an ancient Egyptian bouncy castle or rooms where you and the enemies can walk on the walls and ceiling adding an entire new dimension to the run&gun, BFE just felt equally as brown and grey as any given Cawadoody. My recommendation:buy the Serious sam HD collection instead
