Not So Serious Keto Video Podcast #1 - Dr. Oz, Soybean Oil, and Breaking Keto

This is my first video podcast. Think of it as an audio podcast (lots of me talking) with some video (mostly of me talking). I'll be discussing keto related topics that are in the news, discussing frequently asked questions from my viewers, and sometimes talking about some non-keto stuff (but probably cooking related).
In this episode, I'll talk about Dr. Oz's suggestion that we "cancel breakfast", a recent University of California Riverside study on soybean oil, and my experiences with breaking (and staying in) ketosis.

Like you Steve, I was a corporate trainer for the bulk of my career. During my career I traveled 50 weeks a year for 10+ years. I have my go to items for airports, hotels and tips for eating out. 1. Eggs are awesome but beware of the scrambled eggs. Order “gluten free” to ensure pancake batter is left out. 2. Airports always have nuts. Perfect keto bars for emergency make it through security fine. 3. Grab bard boiled eggs off hotel buffet and put in your room fridge. 4. If your hotel room doesn’t have a mini fridge, ask for one to be brought up. Tell them you have a medical condition and need to store medicine. This way they will not charge you. Your keto food is your medicine and you are allergic to being obese. See, no lying involved...being obese makes you legitimately sick. 5. Protein, low carb veggie, butter. Skip the bread basket. Salads can get crazy with soybean oil dressings and surprise sugars. Nice steak, broccoli, butter. This can be done on any menu including Italian. 6. Whole Foods or similar....hit up this type of grocery when you land or headed to hotel. Olive bar, check. Cheese isle, check. Precut veggies, check. Sour cream based dip, check. Single serve bone broth to heat in micro.Grilled meats precooked, lunch meat, prewashed romain hearts to wrap it up. 7. Of you are feeling weak, rely on a chain restaurant you know you can eat at. I know Chili’s has a steak with two side I can pick with butter than will fall within my expense report allowance and will fill me up and get me past a meal until I feel stronger. Find your chain and save local exploration for a day you are stronger. 8. Pack k cups you love. I splurge on a flavored few that I love that have no carbs and travel with them. I can get hot water anywhere and run it through a pod even if there isn’t a machine. Many hotel rooms have them now. Sometimes coffee will save me. 9. Sparking water at airport. If I am going to spend $3 on a water I will Often switch to Perrier or the like. The bubbles will fill me up, and I can sometimes find a flavored version. 10. High Key “oatmeal” keto breakfast. Single portion into ziplock. Add hot water. Sometimes you need an egg break at breakfast. I do this as an afternoon snack too as many break rooms on the road have hot water. My best for traveling is to order as if you have an allergy. Just because flour doesn’t give you a life and death allergy doesn’t mean you aren’t “allergic” to it. You legitimately have a reaction to it. Insulin resistance. Ordering for your allergy is self preservation and you need not explain to anyone else beyond that statement. You are worth treating your food as if your life depends on it.

Why is it that the common public think of Keto as a cult, or dangerous? I had lost over 40 lbs, and my brother-in-law said I looked really good and asked what I was doing. I said I was practicing IF and doing Keto. As soon as I said Keto, his wife said, "Oh my God! Keto is so bad for you. A friend of our decided to do Keto and after two months she had a stroke. I would never do Keto in my life." I wanted to say, "That stroke wasn't from Keto." Instead, I did what any sane person would do. I replied with, "Wow. That sucks." And I moved the conversation along.

I had a stroke 1 1/2 years after I started Keto but I'm sure being keto wasn't the cause and I think that being keto, helped me completely recover! It did take about three months to get my strength back, but I'm great now. It's been three years. Stroke was a blood clot in the brain from high BP. My BP is going down where I might be able to get off one.

I absolutely love your approach to it all! Keto/low carb is a lifestyle and there are days where you will "stray" a little, but one small portion of something is not permission for the "oh well I went and did it now so I might as well eat everything in sight!" The ketogenic lower carb way of eating is LIBERTY!

I just returned from a lodge retreat long weekend with a group where there were set menus, ever changing meal times, probably 80 percent of the menus were not even remotely Keto friendly; many many desserts and snacks of every description out and available all the time. I took some Keto bars (I use very occasionally!) and nuts to tide me over any rough spots. I got through the weekend quite well in spite of the challenges. And took some flak for actually skipping a meal and all the evening snacks. I didn't disappear but socialized with everyone else just without a plate or bowl of whatever. What helped a lot was the discovery that there was one other person there who had just started Keto recently, and they were glad I stuck with it, so you never know!

We plan on visiting Hawaii in 2021 for our 40th anniversary. I've never been but my bride was there for a month back when she was 18. Our best friends moved to Oahu in March 2020 for a job his employer insisted couldn't be done remotely, but due to the pandemic, he's never even been to his new office! You could certainly be stuck in a worse place than Hawaii! I expect to break keto during our trip, but I also want to lose a lot more weight before we get there so the kids on the beach don't try to pull me into the ocean while yelling "Don't cover his blowhole!" Not a Dr. Oz fan for the same reasons, but it's always nice when someone with his level of popularity gets it right. Isn't the KZbin algorithm fascinating? Great vid. Scott

Ok! Very late at the party here! But, hey, I just found your channel the first time with the “nestle crunch” chocolate bar and ordered the silicone tray and many others since then! So, why am I here in the Not So Serious Podcast episode 1? Background: I’ve been listening to weight loss “meditation/hypnosis” while I am working from home in the last two weeks. I’m not sure if it’s working, so, I wanted to change it up! So, I put your podcasts on playlist and I’m listening to those instead. Noooooooo!!!! Signed, over 60 woman who has never EVER taken Dr. Oz seriously 🤐 And it is a no-brainer that more and more medical professionals (and medical entertainers, ala Dr. Oz) are leaning into IF. Yes IF has resolved many physical issues I had been experiencing before going Keto. Keto has clearly been instrumental in weight loss, resolving hangry feelings, and not concerned about where my next meal is coming from (psychological dependence). Ok. Now, on to finding a good podcast name, because you offer great info in an accessible manner. 😁

I made a decision to break keto during the holidays this year, something I don’t usually do. I’ve been living this lifestyle for 11 years. I didn’t go crazy, but I enjoyed some excellent foods and wines that I haven’t had in a long time. But wow to the joint pain and headaches. And the effects from alcohol were much much more. I’m back on track, but I haven’t been IFing because I wake up so hungry. I gained 5#, but it’s gone. I still feel like garbage and the headache that I got on Christmas Day still lingers. In the past, I’ve enjoyed the occasional treat and then gotten back on track right away with little negative side effects. This extended debauchery has consequences! I won’t be breaking keto again for a good while.

Iv'e accidentally dropped into the 2 meals a day and it seems to have worked so far. I usually have a very late breakfast/brunch around 10.00 and then have my main meal just before 18.00. That seems to fit with an IF pattern of 16 : 8 . This week's interesting phenomenon is that i'm getting a lot less pain in my hands at night : over the last few years iv'e been getting a lot of 'claw' like feel and actual pain along 2 fingers at night. On week 3 of my journey that seems to have disappeared.

Great video. Now that I am in maintenance mode, 99% of the time I am Keto/IF. However, I make a few exceptions: Vacation - only a special meal. For example, I was in Colorado and we went to a nice dinner. I ate the black rice and roasted corn that accompanied my salmon. We then shared a beautiful roasted peach cobbler. It was worth it. The remainder of the trip, I was Keto and IFish. Thanksgiving and Christmas days - I pick and choose, I don't just eat anything and everything. I choose what foods are worth it to me.Afterwards, I do a 24 hour fast with carnivore and I'm back into it within a day. They key is to be strategic, and even if you aren't, get back to it the next day. Don't beat yourself up and abandon ship over a misstep or two. You'll regain your footing and feel proud of doing so.

Funny - we have the opposite experience when we go to Costco on Kauai - huge lines almost to the back of the store. It's very nicely stocked and very clean (aren't all Costcos?), and probably not as big as the Maui one, but the lines!!! They do move relatively fast, though. So, we try to hit it as soon as we arrive and never go back for the rest of the trip, so as to not waste our precious vacation time in Costco. As far as your podcast name - I like the Not So Serious - doesn't stray too much from your KZbin channel which is really growing nicely. Congrats!

The good part about keto is that as time goes on, you feel less inclined to cheat or give into social situations. In addition to the things I mentioned in this video, having prepackaged keto-friendly food helps a lot. Whether that's a bag of nuts, a protein bar, a keto bar, or single serving cheese and salami packets. You'll pay a premium for those things, but they can be handy in a pinch. As for receptions, if you're talking about business cocktail hours, I learned a number of years ago not to drink alcohol at any business function. I just go for club soda with a twist of lime.

G'day Steve, fantastic info! I'm relatively new to this, still more low carb than keto, & the day to day life aspects of this are really helpful. Thank you! (Edit) I just saw amongst comments that you may be (re)starting workouts, & I'm very interested to hear your experiences with eating & timing etc in this regard.

Thank you for the kind words. I don't need to be a KZbin hit, but if this channel were about 4x the size, it would be financially sustainable for me as a full time gig. That's what I'm shooting for. 🙂 PS - I'll start injected the occasional carnivore recipe into my line-up.

'Breaking keto' depends on why you follow keto. If it's not just about body weight, the implications can be very different. The inflammatory, mood destroying, brain fuddling effects of breaking keto can be soul destroying. I can he back in keto within a couple of days but it takes at least two weeks (and possibly longer) to bounce back from the whole-of-body issues

Which is why I try to make it clear that each individual needs to make his/her own decision on whether it's worth it based on how going out of keto affects them. My Hawaii experience is enough to remind me that it will take a very special occasion to go out of keto again.

That was great, thanks for sharing about your vacation! I would choose the name - KETO 'cut/up'. That's a great suggestion about business and eating, since I've found in social settings people are not happy if you say you have food allergies or are on keto … they STILL insist on trying to find something to feed you! (I know the heart is right in these people) … So, saying, "Oh, I just ate a huge lunch (or brekky) and I'm not hungry," sounds like a workable (and non-offensive) suggestion.

Great video! Sounds like y'all had a great vacation. I will use the tips. A couple of video suggestions. You mentioned Loco Moco, how about a keto version of that dish. Second, got any ideas of how to make a keto latke?
@SeriousKeto
@SeriousKeto 4 жыл бұрын
The loco moco would be pretty easy. I'd just need to play around with the gravy a bit to make a good keto beef gravy. At some point in the next month or two, I plan to do a video on root vegetables to see which work best for various potato applications (one of which could be latkes).

As a Type 1 diabetic obviously I can't play around breaking keto. In fact if I could eliminate carbs from my diet completely I'd be happy.

Yep. That's why I made sure to mention that my perspective is from a non-diabetic. Sometimes I forget that folks are doing keto for far more serious reasons than my own.
@paulpladin9590

Same here. Type1 is a huge life complication but it does make somethings easy. Figuring out a bolus for a menu item where you don't know the ingredients really takes the shine off of a cheat. What's the Henny Youngman line? "If it hurts when you do that...don't do that". I'm sure non-type1s have a different challenge as they have no immediate consequences to deal with.

Paul Pladin If you don’t mind me asking, does DM Type 1 make it harder to do keto? I was Type 2 and had to seriously monitor my glucose and ketone level. I have a history of keto acidosis. My doctor and I had monthly visits adjusting my meds. How is it for you?

The problem with the salad strategy is that pretty much any oil or dressing you’ll find in any restaurant will be soybean oil or some other equally heinous industrial seed oil. Even a lot of things labeled olive oil are mixed with vegetable oils because real olive oil is expensive and not produced in sufficient quantity to meet market demand. Some people also stall out on keto when eating nuts and dairy, due to inflammation. Basically for a lot of us we’re stuck with ordering a steak or hamburger patty and some butter.
