Think of this video as an audio podcast (lots of me talking) with some video (mostly of me talking). I'll be discussing keto related topics that are in the news, discussing frequently asked questions from my viewers, and sometimes talking about some non-keto stuff (but probably cooking related).
In this episode, I pick up where I left off with episode 8 -- looking at some of the positive side effects of the pandemic and quarantine we are living with. This is not about making light of the current situation, but rather about finding the hope or silver lining in what is a difficult time.

I think most people refuse to give in to the doom and gloom, but the media is committed to it. It's how they get viewers and money. They have a financial incentive to keep you afraid, at home and glued to the TV. Good for you, Steve. Everyone should take this as an opportunity to do something good, try something new, work on improving some aspect of your life. Make this the best time of your life!

My son's girlfriend works at a medical clinic and since masks are in such high demand, she's been using her spare time to make face masks for herself and her co workers. If you know how to sew, there are many youtube DIY's that include directions and even patterns for the type of masks that Hospitals are accepting right now, due a shortage of masks. A great way to help your communtiy, family and friends.

That's awesome. 40 or 50 years ago, when most homes had a sewing machine, folks could have been banging out masks left and right. It kind goes to my point about hoping people rediscover some of "the old ways".

I love hearing that the animals are all getting rescued!! I made the decision to work out of my home before all this happened because I need a new car and the rent money will now be a car payment. Unfortunately, as a massage therapist, I am not able to work. This is giving me time to organize my office/home and purge many unnecessary things that have accumulated from both. But I can’t wait to finish organizing so I can settle into doing some artwork without feeling guilty that I should be doing something else!

Thanks Steve! This reminds me of my favorite saying: "I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes.” ― Charles Swindoll Right now many people are afraid and feel out of control. I believe that we are all capable of controlling our attitude. Being on keto and staying away from negative media influences such as Facebook has helped me for the past 5 months. What we eat, what we listen to, what we watch or see and what we allow ourselves to think about will affect our attitude. I hope that your message helps many. Stress and worry raises cortisol and breaks down our immune system. A smile, a kind word or a thoughtful gesture has the power to brighten not only your world, but that of others.

Thinking back to "appointment television" or those special occasion runs of The Wizard of Oz or The Sound of Music when I was a kid, I feel like not only do we feel entitled but very few things are truly special anymore. I guess that's why a new Star Wars release causes some folks to wait in line for hours or days. It's the same feeling. I always thought those people were nuts, but now I get it. I haven't felt joy like seeing a pallet of toilet paper in my grocery store since I was 12. How surreal is that?!

Thank you for your uplifting, common sense podcast. I agree wholeheartedly with your list. What have I been up to during this 'situation'? I'm taking are of my 90 yo mother who had a fall in January, meals etc and all her needs. Taking care of my 79 yo husband who was 2 weeks in hospital with Legionnaire's Disease and who is now home since 4 days. I am grateful that I bought the house directly in front of my house for my mother so I could keep an eye on her and for the recent excellent hospital care for my husband (having first ruled out the corona virus). I am also grateful for my excellent health and the keto and intermittent fasting lifestyle since a year and a quarter and for the 15 kilos I lost. I am 70 and people think I am 60 with a figure of 40-ish. A few days ago I started polishing the silver, clearing out a few drawers and getting rid of 'stuff' at the house my mother lives in. Tomorrow, if the torrent of rain lets up here in my part of Spain, I plan an attack on a part of my garage. Am following common sense and guidelines when food shopping once a week and am too busy to worry.

Thanks Steve. I totally agree with you. In my house, I am the positive one here, while Hubby does look for the very worst of this. While I do maintain, that this is no where near the worst, I am hoping for the best and planing for the worst. I have an example for you about manifestations of cleanliness. On our trip to the USA in very early March, when you went into the Restrooms, there were lines for the sinks as long as the lines for the toilets. In a Men's Room, that is a change for the good!!

Steve, there are two types of people- victims and volunteers. We are the more positive volunteers, however, just like life, opposites exist. Some people thrive on being a victim and enjoy wallowing in self pity as they don’t have to take responsibility for their own existence. They can blame others. Just keep on doing what you do, maybe we can bring a few victims over to the joy of being a volunteer! BTW- hahahaha “licking strangers faces” hahaha!!! Keep being you! ❤️

Cheers to you Steve! I do feel like this is a time that many of us in our present culture can begin to notice how we depend on people in various service professions contribute to the betterment of our lives! Take for instance all delivery people, the mail carriers, grocery stores workers, public transportation workers, Lyft and Uber drivers, Cab drivers, all restaurants and their staff, teachers, childcare providers, Movie theater staff, Car mechanics, Hairstylists, Barbers dentists and dental hygienists , nurses, doctors, all hospital workers, all trash collectors and all cleaning services! This time calls attention to the value of all those people that often make our lives easier and contribute to happiness. Maybe there will be an understanding too that healthy nationalism is caring for each other and perhaps too that health care is a human right. Chief Seattle said something to the effect that we are all part of the web of life. We may start to understand that as it dawns on us that we are interdependent.

Honestly, I always have time to do stuff anyway because I don't work and I am on disability. But before Christmas, I was taking care of my mother. She passed away just four days before Christmas and her funeral was the day after. My dad is 74 years old and still going to work everyday and I worry about him. I just reread the Laura Ingalls series. When I got to the Long Winter it really brings home how much we have for which to be thankful. We aren’t facing starvation, none of us are having to twist wheat in order to keep a stove burning so we can cook and not freeze to death and none of us are having to wait months for a shipment of supplies. I understand that everyone feels their problems are the worst because they’re the ones experiencing them, but holy cats, it’s not that bad.

Personally, I have been accused by husband as being too Polyanaistic (not a real word, but perhaps my positive outlook on everything was bugging him) :-) I took it as a compliment. I find that the less continual TV news stations that I watch or listen to the easier it is to stay positive. Really this isn't too much different then my regular life the weird thing for me will be when I go back to work. Heh. But I can say over the last 4 years it has been such a blessing for the first 2 months I was devastated about my job loss but realized my kids needed a more patient, and mentally healthy Mom. So aside from teaching my now 4 year old during the day, and teaching my teen here and there how to cook (when I can get them out of their room lol). I have improved and updated my own skills. The first thing I started doing was honing my cooking/baking skills. I have started Keto (last Nov.) so there was relearning the Keto recipes, I have learned some basic Japanese, learned to can and preserve (a little), kept my house a lot cleaner than it was when I was working (minus the explosion of children's toys and occasional dish pile ups). I would still like to learn basic sewing and gardening before I go back to work because I may not get another chance but overall my survival/self sufficiency skills have improved and I am so much the better for it. My advice would be do it now while you can, don't feel guilty about doing the things you've always wanted to do, while temporarily neglecting the things you SHOULD be doing. Time is too short, enjoy it.

Going to attend our first virtual dinner party tonight using Facebook Messenger video. Going to paint the stairwell up to my office (in the process of patching the walls now). Until it snowed last night we had started getting the garden and greenhouse ready for spring. I guess that will have to wait...back to shoveling snow.

Hi Steve, One super positive thing that is happening here, (San Felipe, Baja Norte, MX) is, our donations to the local hospital which has no ventilators are up exponentially. Just made your egg bites recipe with ground homemade sausage and cheddar, super yummo! Love your positive tude! Salud, amigo!

You're like a breathe of fresh air Steve...and pretty hilarious! My positive is...I'm going to come out of all this thinner not fatter! Started to add alternate day fasting to my third year keto journey since Keto keeps me satiated for so long...helps out my food storage too another plus!

Dealing with the little irritating hidden spaces in my nest that have become cluttered and messy... cupboards, drawers, closets, under beds. Starting herbs and flowers from seed packets in egg cartons, instead of buying well deviled plants at the nursery. Laundry is no longer piled up. Picking wild violets and buttercups in my yard and sprinkling tiny arrangements around my nest. Writing in my journal. Breakfast on my back deck, sometimes with a fire in the chiminea. Simply focused to live in the fullness of the moment... I too refuse to give into the negative, yet recognize and live in the truth with faith, hope and love, rediscovering the joy of thankfulness in a whole new way. Thank you for this... it has blessed me!

Some of my herbs are already sprouting in their trays (so that's exciting). I need to follow your lead and just start picking one room (or one corner of a room) per day to clean, declutter and organize.

I believe that another side effect of all this is that we are going to grow in appreciation of our health care workers (and be a lot more enthusiastic about expressing that appreciation). It will be like how we thank veterans for their service. So, Alexandra, thank you not only for your service but by raising the morale of your fellow "front line" soldiers in this battle.

@@SeriousKeto Thank you! We all need a morale boost right now! It has to start somewhere. I'll go first! We ran out of ventilators during H1N1, but I don't think anyone knew that. At least people are acknowledging this stuff!

As far as the polite thing goes, Southerners have always had that. Now it’s times 10! A southern traffic jam is two guys at a four way stop trying to out-polite each other.

We travel to the South on a pretty much annual basis. I tend to agree with you. When I retire, you can bet that it will be somewhere well south of Wisconsin.

That was fun to watch. Those games look fun to play and hilarious. Here in Louisiana the weather is great and we are outdoors lovers so a lot is going on in our big yard. We go fishing, working on my wife’s(my Rock) bird houses plus she does crafts of all kinds, I do my morning back porch workouts, my daughter and i are both still working which is great, my son hunts whatever’s in season like wild hogs and bull frogs in the swamp. We cook every day anyway and do so many things so this hasn’t been a big adjustment for my family. The freezer is full and our hearts are too so bring on the bad times, we got this. Hey folks, don’t let all this crap get you down because it will pass like a bad storm and will become just a crazy ass memory. Y’all up there in the “Frozen Nawth” should be use to getting snowed in anyway, lol. Keep your heads up, stay busy, stay off the big news channels and for heaven’s sake pray a little. AND KEEP WATCHING SERIOUS KETO! Geaux Tigers!

You're right about the frozen north. I think that's why Wisconsin leads the nation in cannibal serial killers (Ed Gein, Jeffery Dahmer). By this time of year, we're very ready to be outside. It looks like Thursday may be warm enough that I can get out and start turning up some soil in my garden.

Just a note on Yahtzee (love that game!): if you hold the cup so that 2 or 3 fingers cover the opening, then shake it that way, your fingers will help muffle the sound quite a bit. I like the game enormously, but don't like that "clatter, clatter, clatter," so lined the cup with felt, and use the "finger muffler" method, and it works very well. The politess of so many people now makes me think of the little cartoon characters, Chip and Dale: "You go first." "No, no, no, I insist, YOU go first." "Oh, thank you very much!" Ok, I'm done yapping...now it's time to find more "stay home and hunker down"--appropriate recipes for someone who cannot just get out and walk; all my exercise for now is the 'reaching up' necessary to get things down from high shelves, 'bending down' to scrub around the porcelain altar, and the 'arm-strengthening' push-pull of vacuuming (again and again and again, just to have something to do in a 208 s.f. studio apartment) located right next to one of the busiest freeways in the country (elders, such as myself are not encouraged to walk along the road).

All of this is happening in the spring, so it's a good time to get some spring cleaning done, maybe clean the garage, switch out the winter/summer clothes, exercise (so so many exercise you tube videos to choose from!). Great video, Steve. Lots of food for thought. Thank you.
