In this highly anticipated second part of my kitchen makeover series, I take on the challenge of reorienting my kitchen space with my contractors and finding the perfect countertops to complement my design aesthetic. I've learned throughout this process that weighing the pros and cons of various options, and ultimately making big decisions is way harder than I thought when it comes to a kitchen.
But the journey towards a dream kitchen is not without its bumps in the road. In this video, I also open up about my growing sense of regret about undertaking this makeover project. From unexpected expenses to unforeseen complications.

As an interior designer that is mostly doing kitchens, trust me, dont put marble in your kitchen! As you said, its is a pain to live with, especially in a kitchen where theres wine, sauce, etc. Its more for bathrooms or decorative purposes. I did like the veines in it but the Quartzite is soooooo beautiful! Its not only the look (which most commenters in favor of the marble are saying) its the material. For what I know you'll pay for, even with sponsors, you have to think about the life of the material. Go Quartizte, go!

I was just about Year-oh, or Yearow, I guess Euro makes more sense. I know some chain restaurant that I can't remember the name of has a Gyro Hero, and saying that it rhymes like Care Bear. Gyro pronounced like a gyroscope is how I understand it's pronounced on the East Coast, and because a meat one comes off a spinning spool of meat, I would also say that is not a "wrong" pronunciation.

For the lights above the island, I think two junction boxes would be better than one. First because the island is longer and two hanging lights will make it look substantial. Second because you will have one light hanging above the dining table so this will give a good contrast with the lights above the island.

Lone fox did calcatta in his new home and did a very cool and simple process of having them ‘laminated’ to prevent staining, etc. Should check it out! I very much prefer that to the quartzite. I will say it is VEEERY trendy, right now. Which means it could go out of style in a big way when people get tired of seeing it everywhere. And it is *quite* a statement. But if you don’t really care about things like that, no worries. It is absolutely beautiful, imo.

Quartzite for two reasons: #1 long term maintenance, trust me the constant worry and care of real marble will get old real fast - especially after the first red wine splash. #2 I believe the real marble is gorgeous, and the super obvious veins are gorgeous....while in a big huge slab. Once that gets cut up into smaller strips and laid end-end (for me) it then begins to look like zebra stripes, which isn't my vibe. I prefer the subtle and calming movement of the quartzite. It sure has been a joy to watch your channel over all these years and see your life expand from college students to full-blown adults!!!

I think the two stones are very comparable in looks, but I also think maintenence on the quartzite will be so much better! When we built my home, the things in my kitchen I appreciated most, were all the electrical outlets we installed, the cabinet for bakining pans, tons of large drawers, stove top and vent in the island (vent raises up) , and the indispensable appliance garage. 14 years later, I wish we had painted, and not stained the cabinets, but that's easy to fix. Oh, and after all this time, the one seam in the granite, is now separating slightly. If you do have to have seams, ask them to reinforce them from the bottom as well. Gotta figure out how to fix mine.

I vote for the quartzite, I wouldn't want to have to worry about re-sealing the natural stone all the time, or being afraid of staining it. I totally understand your stress about picking a countertop. We are changing our bathroom vanity countertop and it took over a year to find the sample and the place to install at a good price. The kitchen is looking amazing, I am obsessed with the lower cabinet colour. Good luck with the rest of the renovation.

i’ve had honed Mystery White Marble counters in my kitchen for a decade, never sealed them since install and yes they get stains and etch and all that but they are beautiful and aging so well. I would still choose them again. Personally I think a slab with more veins and contrast would be interesting in your kitchen because it can be like abstract art. I have soapstone in a primary bath that is all the pattern needed. Quartz is so expensive because it’s engineered and usually you have to pay for the whole slab whereas natural is usually just the sq ft needed. Everyone learns so much from each reno project, kitchens are different each time.

QUARTZITE! Quartzite gives you the feel of marble with the veining but unlike marble (which is a soft material/scratches SO easy) quartzite is a super hard stone (won’t scratch easy/would be hard to chip). It’s also heat resistant and the color tones would complement the other finishes in your kitchen beautiful!!

It seems like pretty much everyone is team quartzite but with all the other green in your house I really love the marble! I feel like the quartzite is kind of one note and the marble would add a lot of depth to the space

I plan on doing a kitchen reno in about a year. I would love to watch a video about things you would like to do differently and advice about the process!

I always loved a sink in the countertop in the island. When you have company and you're preparing food or cleaning up a little bit your back's not to them.. or even when you're home alone you're not facing the wall using the sink
