I love it. If I bought it I would make a lid that keeps the gases in, with a small chimney on one end, and use it like a tent stove is used placing the pot on top.

I always think how it will compare to my Firebox Freestyle, and I think in this case it just looks too fiddly. My Nano and Freestyle somehow are able to get a secondary burn going to the point they are nearly smokeless, and they are just so easy to use. I do really appreciate you bringing us new stoves with time using them to give your experienced feedback with them. This is a really interesting stove, but looks like it needs a little more design work to get where they want to go. I'm always a little suspicious when brands try to squeek in a bunch of useless multitool functions. Just make a good stove. I don't need a hex wrench in my stove.

I was a Kickstarter backer and received mine a few days ago. I haven’t fired it up yet but I have played with setup a few times and the only thing I find a little fiddly is the pot stand, but it’s not bad. And the trade-off for all the options it offers to accommodate different fuels is worth it to me. It’s also nice that when taken apart, the pot stand is so thin and light. I’m really looking forward to real-world testing.

@@MarkYoungBushcraft I find if I squeeze the pot stand a little while I’m moving it around it doesn’t shift or fall apart. Good review, it’s the most complete one I’ve seen. One thing that bugs me is having 3 pouches (stove, burner, blower). I bought a cheap electronics organizer case to keep it all together.

Serotonin advised me the pot support would be a bit different on the production model (I received a pre-production to test). I found the same about pinching the pot support to hold it together but felt that would be awkward in cold weather and still has the potential for loosing a piece@@amybennett828

I very well might be wrong but after seeing this stove in operation, I can't help but wonder if the gasification efficiency might improve if the top gasification holes remain where they are but the sidewalls continue on up another one inch or so higher than the present height. The reason why I suspect this is that I have a homemade "gasification" stove that I built. After I added a mostly solid pot stand on top of the stove, the gasification improved noticeably. I believe what is happening with the gasification holes too close to the top of the sidewalls is that there is air coming in from the sides over the top of the stove and "diluting" the combustible gases too much and too quickly as to render the combustible gasses too diluted to catch on fire and burn as well as they might otherwise. As always, a great review and a thumbs up for ya.

Hi Lonnie. Your observations are right on. Most wood-gas stoves have a "focuser" that delays venting of wood gasses and allows them time to mix with the fresh air before combusting. I may be able to mock something up with this stove to see if it helps. Thanks for commenting

Thank you for the thorough review - appreciate your attention to detail. Just a thought regarding your estimation of 50% of the secondary combustion. My take on it, is that as long as there is no smoke, all available gases must have been burned. Other reviews of the stove show far more secondary combustion, which indicates that it is also a matter of fuel quality and how the fire has been laid.

I agree that complete secondary combustion is not required for the stove to be effective. I will also say I tested this stove with a large variety of wood types, sizes and orientations and at no time did I get complete combustion. Thanks for commenting

I think i actually like the fact that it's not a full gasifier stove !. Yes gasifier stoves are very efficient and create little to no smoke which is great to boil water but difficult to cook on because of this efficiency. I think i would enjoy the fact that heat source could be generated by the jets and as it burns down you could enjoy cooking over coals and from what i saw it still generated very little smoke. Enjoyed your review Mark ! and i am far from a stove engineer lol but thought I would add my 2 cents

Appreciate the honest review, Mark! I think a word you used during your review describes this stove pretty well - fiddly. While it doesn't look too difficult to put together as you did, I'm really wondering if it would be a lot more "fiddly" if you were out in really cold weather and had gloves on. That would be a test I would like to hear about. And the pot stand...4 pieces for a pot stand that won't hold together by itself just seems like trying to do too much with it, trying to force it into too many jobs that it might be able to accomplish, but none of them really well. And the extra cutouts in the solid fuel piece again, trying to do too much with it - I don't think I've ever even used a hex wrench in real life, much less out in the woods. It seems like a stove that is still in the design and development process, not yet a fully finished product. It's got some good points, but it almost seems like no one on the design team actually took it out and tried to use it in a real situation, and the buyers (I won't be one) will be the ones who figure out either how to make it work better with "finagles" of their own, or give up on it and relegate it to their version of "nice idea, didn't quite work" pile.

Personally I find these slide together type of stoves a real pain and potentially dangerous. The joy of using something like the FireBox stove shouldn’t be underestimated.

When is this thing hitting the market? I like it. I think the amount of gasification is determined by how much fuel is being added. With only the stove filled maybe half full of maple, one could only expect 50 % of the jets firing in gasification. I believe that the more fuel the more gas made, the more gas made the more gasification and fired jets will be seen. Just my thoughts. However i do like the stove and think that it could perform well.

Hi Mark, Firstly, thank you for your in depth and honest review. I must say I like it, love the addition of the bellows and fork, very neat. They didn’t need to add this but they did and I think it’s a great addition. I hear you when you say it’s almost like they’ve tried to cover all bases, not a bad thing. I like how it’s a multi fuel burner, as for the pot stand, yes I can see that being a bit of an issue, like you said, maybe use a leather glove when hot and lightly pinching two of the plates towards each other. Over all though I do like it. Would you say it was a good quality build Mark? Also, if you don’t mind me asking, where did you acquire the little fireproof mat? Love it! G'day Mark, yep, the pot stand needs attention, but I do quite like the rectangular form factor, since it will take longer sticks and one can slide a mug/pot along for top feed in and temp management. Or maybe fit two smaller receptacles ? Dont mind it as an "assisted" gasifier, better than not at all, and as you said, non-collapsible, cylindrical, jobs are pain for a full pack ...... personally I'd get a larger model for car camping. I do like one that can house a remote gas fueled burner as well, ....... though only with the non-legged, proprietary job is a real downer IMO. I'm think'n a triangular design, to keep the size down, would be better for this capability. i.e. not try'n to fit a triangular peg in a square, or indeed rectangular, hole. It is well off the ground, which is good. Good to see a door too ... but it needs some way to keep it open whilst using it as a feed in port. Not sure how one could "easily" manage ash build up; I dont think simply raising the grate is the best idea, because you'll decrease the fuel capacity, possibly get the heat/coals too close to the pot. Maybe lowering the tray since there's plenty of ground clearance, either way it could still fill up, depending on use. Probably a slide out tray would be the best. In any event, it would requite a very significant design change. Cheers Duke.

Great gear demonstration. Since it doesn't do a great job with secondary combustion it might be better to use the single wall titanium stoves. Save the extra weight and space.

Is there enough on the grill plate handles overhanging on each side to bend them flush with the walls of the stove to stop the grill from sliding ? Might work ! Great stove ,interesting design . Always enjoy watching your reviews Mark !...cheers

I think for me, the pot stand, gas burner, and the solid fuel stand are the things I wouldn’t use. The bellows and the grill I would use. I think the grill would be fine for a pot stand. As for solid fuels, my Esbit is what I use. I would use this strictly as a wood stove. As far as round collapsible gasification stove, I think my Ohuhu stove is very good. ✌️🇨🇦🇺🇸✌️

I like the trough like design. The problem I see with cylindrical stoves is wood is long but narrow. To make it work, pieces have to be cut into a bunch of smaller pieces. I hope somewhere someone can get a good design going!

Regarding the 50% secondary combustion: it should be mentioned, that this could only kick in if there is also smoke - in which (to my knowledge) most of the wood gas can be found in. Please correct me, but at least for this I would not blame the design if there is already no smoke (to light on fire).

You are correct. Burning wood in this stove does create smoke and combustible wood gasses; however, the design does not create complete secondary combustion. Even so, it it still more efficient that no secondary combustion. Thanks for commenting

Mark I just got in a joker lynx, I like the way it looks, but it came with a poorly ground secondary bevel and it is not very sharp but that can be fixed. When I cut hard into a piece of wood with resistance, the handle wants to roll in my hand do to it being such a smooth round shape, am I just not gripping hard enough, or are there some better options out there in the same category of knife. Also, you need to do a bushcraft knife tier list, make the title pretty click baity and get some views, I think that would be a great video

I agree with you on the slickness of the Lynx grip. I lightly sanded mine to make it a bit more grippy. Knife handle grips can be so subjective. I find a larger grip that is higher top to bottom than it is wide more stable in my hand. Soft synthetic materials are easier to hold onto but don't look as nice. An example of a functionally well designed grip is the Terava Jaakaripuukko. Hope this helps. I will consider a knife tier list video as well

I’m not a fan of gasification stoves, I’d rather a regular stove that burns hot enough that there isn’t much smoke, but maybe there just isn’t enough gas for all those holes? It’s a pretty small chamber, with a hell of a lot of holes. Don’t you think?
