Your explanation is so helpful to understand the actions of these transmitters. Would you help me find more information about 5-HT2A -2C receptor distribution in the mesolimbic and VMPFC, DLPFC, and Insula-amygdala pathways? And can you tell me the easiest source (illustrated books, videos, or your simple explanation, then it would be so beautiful !!) to know more about the different pathways of every neurotransmitter or modulator and its functions in depth? Finally, I am from India and have a background in the good old way of teaching mukhaa-mukha patana, i.e., face-to-face teaching and learning, in Ayurveda. And I am learning about the new thought processes of consciousness, i.e., neuroscience, neuropsychology, and other disciplines. What is the purpose of SSRI's? They inhibit the "re-uptake" of serotonin but what does that mean?
@iaminkaland2 ай бұрын
After serotonin is released into the space between neurons (the synaptic gap), it either 1) binds to the next neuron, 2) is broken down, or 3) is *taken back* up by the original neuron that released it. This reabsorption is called "reuptake." SSRIs block reabsorption by blocking the receptor that does it. So, serotonin stays in the gap longer, stimulating the next neuron for longer. This prolongs its effects.

Considering that L-tyrosine is instrumental in the production of dopamine, it makes sense now that when I supplement with 500mg L-tyrosine and vitamin B6, my focus and social energy levels increase. Note: I typically only take supplemental L-tyrosine on the rare days where I am required to be at my peak performance (work related). Thank you for this video, it clairfied several questions I had regarding these 2 neurotransmitters.
@CtDDtC19193 ай бұрын
One thing that I noticed in regards to telling my co-workers/friends about my use of L-Tyrosine... several of them are Hispanic and the "L-" was confusing them. A few of us went out to dinner one evening and one of them said they couldn't find the supplement. Turns out, she was looking for El Tyrosine! I explained that the L was referring to the left-handed version of the molecule... so it was the letter L. That led to a humorous discussion about how I made a similar mistake when I moved to the Southern United States from my homeland of Canada. One of my co-workers shouted "Ole'!" about something, and I naturally thought he had shouted "Au Lait!" (With milk!!). I found it rather confusing. I thought that maybe Hispanic people really have a thing for dairy?!? This was because my mind was still processing in French Canadian. It has been an inside joke for some time now 😅 Cafe' Ole'!!

Is there an equivalent to serotonin syndrome for dopamine, or is it not necessarily dangerous in the same way?
@iaminkaland7 ай бұрын
That's an excellent question. Yes, there's a condition called dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS). While it's not equivalent to serotonin syndrome, this condition is characterized by overactivity of dopaminergic systems. It might occur in people who are chronically taking dopaminergic drugs like Levodopa. The symptoms include things like gambling, hypersexuality, binge eating and shopping, mania, hypomania, severe mood swings o hyperkinesia (involuntary movement) Thanks for asking, hope it helped!

Hi Dr. Land, I waa wondering what the cool down time in the dopamine slump is. So, 20 minutes of continuous stimulation creates a 50% dip in valence which is on a downward trajectory, but if you cease stimulation dopamine signaling goes back to baseline, so what is that time period? I think its somewhere between a minute and 20 minutes, but I'm guessing.
@iaminkaland3 ай бұрын
Hey great question. There's no singular trajectory of dopamine. In this study, they stimulated the cells so it's not similar to real-world dopaminergic response. Depends on the method (i.e., what dopaminergic drug of choice; exercise, coffee, gaming, chocolate, etc), the person's baseline dopamine, dopamine receptor density, amount of stimulation, etc. For example, cold exposure and exercise can cause a steady increase in dopamine for hours. Hope it helped.

Which enzymes activate these two neurotransmitters? Can you just name the category 1 to 6? (I mean oxidoredox, transfer, hydrox etc. I am curious because complex psychological things like motivation, memory issues etc need more than just small molecules like Sertn and Dopa.
@iaminkaland3 ай бұрын
For both dopamine and serotonin, the enzymes involved fall under the oxidoreductase, lyases, and transferase categories, with specific enzymes for each neurotransmitter. Dopamine --> Tyrosine hydroxylase (hydroxylase - oxidoreductase) converts tyrosine to L-dopa --> DOPA decarboxylase (decarboxylase - lyase category) converts L-DOPA into dopamine. Serotonin --> Tryptophan hydroxylase (hydroxylase - oxidoreductase) converts tryptophan to 5-HTP --> Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (decarboxylase - lyase category) converts 5-HTP to serotonin Both neurotransmitters are broken down by monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme in the oxidoreductase category

I am sorry my question made things a little bit confusing my doubts are : can you please tell me about the pathways of mesolimbic, VMPFC, DLPFC, Insula-Amydala: 1). How are they connected? 2). What types of neurotransmitters are acting on or modulating these neuronal networks?. Which networks have5-HT2A-2C receptors as the predominant receptors in these networks.? 4). Can you recommend any illustrated books or videos of lectures that describe these networks?
@iaminkaland6 ай бұрын
Hey, no worries. Hope this helps 1) You can divide the mesolimbic pathway into lateral and medial ones. Lateral dopaminergic neurons (saliency/attention system) = Substantia Nigra (SN) Pars Compacta --> lateral NAC --> lateral and dorsolateral PFC. Medial dopamine neurons (reward system) medial posterior VTA → ventromedial Substantia Nigra----> ACC and medial PFC *For dopamine, see this video* kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpfNgmeIZrR6ns0 *I love this article:* pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30711326/ 2) The neurotransmitters are complex. 5HT2A is expressed around the CNS. Some rich areas include PFC, basal ganglia, ACC, thalamus, and hippocampus, for example. 4) I wish I could. The article I mentioned above is excellent for dopaminergic mesolimbic networks, and my video explains its mechanism in reward processing. Otherwise, just PubMed.

How we leave from dopamine addiction

Good question. I have a video on Dopamine and today's short talk about dopamine detox. I'd recommend a book from Dr Anna Lembke called the Dopamine Nation.

@@iaminkalandwhy detox from dopamine?
@iaminkaland2 ай бұрын
@@gracielamrad It's a metaphor. It means short term abstinence from most addictive substances like sugar, alcohol, and gaming to reset dopamine receptor and baseline dopamine.

? Foods for sleep? You mention banana for serotonin melatonin thus eaten lunchtime? Arvo? Dessert? Ratio of protein to carbohydrates? Maybe hi protein no fat plain yoghurt with a banana and tsp almond spread, pepita seeds? Thankyou.

High-protein at the first half of the day (e.g. turkey,chicken,fish,dairy,eggs, grass-fed beef. if there’s no allergies). Higher Carbs in the evening, low protein. Banana is good, pumpkin seeds, yogurt, vegetables.
