I do want to note, that if it is a part of the service drop meaning directly from the transformer to the pole that technically that is on the power company and they have their own standards. All of the requirements that I talked about do count for overhead service wires though. The service actually starts at the point of service and the power company dictates the point of service, could be on the riser, could be at the top of the meter, could be at the transformer. So depending on where they say the point of services depends on when the NEC kicks in.

In my area, the utility requires the point of attachment and droop be no less than 12' in a residential setting not over a driveway. I lost a bid because I proposed installing a mast service to increase the height of the triplex, because the point of attachment and droop were both below 10', and it was a single story house so I had to bring everything above the roofline. Well they didn't wanna do that because it cost too much, but I don't lose any sleep over those bids. I wasn't going to install a 48amp car charger in their 100 amp panel with electric water heater and appliances, and I wasn't going to upgrade the service improperly.

I just took on a property where the attachment at the corner of a single wide mobile home is a 6"x6"x16' post buried 3 feet in the ground. The droop is around 11 feet. This is going over a future driveway to a shop, so needless to say that wire has got to go up. The local utility says it's all on me since the original post was something supplied by the electrical contractor. So I just picked up a used 28' pole which will go in the ground 5' to comply with the utility's requirements for over a driveway. According to them the minimum pole length for over a driveway is a 25' pole, the minimum attachment height is 20' and the lowest clearance (droop) is 16'. Hopefully I'll be able to get enough clearance for concrete and septic trucks to get under.

sounds like you have the height covered because there are no vehicles over 13'6" without special permits and your total height after sticking this pole in the ground will be around 23 feet.

Good discussion. I would be interested in a video discussing drip loop requirements at the mast head attachment - what is acceptable and what is not. I see some sloppy work out there that has me scratching my head some days.

Thank you for your detailed video. I have a question what if I build an addition in that area were the wire drops? Does that change the clearance code of 10 ft? If the new addition is located were you have the green arrow pointing upwards and says 10 ft.in your video. Thank you

Why is it that some states allow for the service drop to be attached to a structure without an insulator, while others require an insulator at the point of attachment? I've always erred on the side of safety, and installed an insulator, either on the mast, or on the structure at its highest point.

It really depends, I would get several quotes and don't tell them anything about two g's and see what they Sometimes you can fix one for as cheap as 500 bucks, and it could be much more lots of variables

Thank you for your videos. They are a huge help. In my case, I’m trying to run 100 amp conductors to a subpanel in a detached garage underground. Can you tell me what type of wire can be used? I know THHN can be used in PVC conduit. I know UF can be used but it doesn’t appear to come in anything larger than 6 AWG. For example, I’ve seen direct burial options of Quadplex USE, URD, SER. Can all of these be used and is it okay to put them in PVC conduit for protection versus direct burial? It seems like if they all can be used then just go with the cheapest option, but I’m unsure what the stipulations are. In my case, it seems like the Quadplex is the most affordable, but I’m not sure it’s okay for me to use in my application. Thank you so much!
