Electric cars are mechanically much simpler than vehicles that have combustion engines. Instead of being powered by something which has to harness the power of thousands of moving parts every minute, an electric car just has a battery and an electric motor.
But that doesn’t mean they don’t need servicing. There are still parts like the brakes and suspension which will need to be checked to make sure they’re safe, and an expert technician will be able to do things like check the battery condition and install any software updates.
Our faithful Nissan Leaf is due its annual service, so we asked to follow the process so you can see what is involved in servicing an electric car. Join Nicki and she discovers what you all owners should look out for.

Anywhere that services cars can service brakes on an ev. Cabin filters are all available online and can be installed by anyone with hands and eyes. Everything else that can be serviced, apart from the battery, can be treated like any other car. My advice is to avoid the woowoo by getting the car serviced at a regular service garage and for anything specifically relating to the battery, talk to a main dealer nefore deciding if its even necessary.

Service cost there is a joke. We had a Leaf back in 2015 and they could only justify saying "we check the fluids". That was £99 back then and on a 2 year lease, there's no need to attend to brake fluid and washer fluid is a customer filled consumable! We didn't bother getting it done, cost us a bit at the end of the lease but that's an unnecessary cost for a competent owner. I recognise that some may wish to pay but as a requirement, it's a scam. Just picked up a new EV, no specified service interval required.

Hi, I'm I. The motor trade, you can do most of the service things yourself, service schedules can be accessed on line, do what you can yourself.... How often do you service your washing machine or hair dryer? Lol electiic motor's don't require anything service wise, brakes hardly wear, due to regen braking, the corrosion on the discs I. The video is normal as it's part of the disc that the brake pads Tony touch, there's really hardly anything to do, the dealer's are just justifying there existance, don't get ripped of.... My EV has had 2 services now, and to be honest, I haven't got a clue what they've done to it whilst it was in. The video report has only ever shown tyre tread depths, and I've never been given any paperwork. I know for a fact they didn't do any software updates at the first one, even though they should have. The only reasons I can see for servicing at a main dealer at present are because of the breakdown cover (something I've had to call on several times now) and preserving the warranty, especially on the battery. In pretty much all other ways, the servicing is not value for money if you're even slightly capable with a spanner.

Y'know, Nikki… I miss my LEAF… even though it needed the battery replaced under warranty, and had such limited range. It was a comfortable, practical, fun car for running errands around town! To be brutally honest, the bells-and-whistles of my Model 3 have now grown old, unnecessary, and frankly silly. After the first few laughs, how often do owners really use the… fart sounds? If Nissan would have just come up with a replacement long range battery for my LEAF… I would have gladly stuck with it.

Even though EV's don't have an engine or transmission, you still need to change the gear oil in the differential. Don't forget, these actually still use antifreeze, similar to what's used in a combustion car. While the Nissan Leaf is the only EV that air cools its battery, most other EV's circulate liquid coolant through its battery cells. All EV's use liquid coolant for its inverter and motor. Even the Nissan Leaf has a coolant reservoir.

In Australia to drive from Melbourne to Sydney, How many stops to recharge. And how long will each recharge take. It takes around 8 to 9 hours to drive in a petrol car. That is with a 15 minute re fuel If it takes more than 9 hours you will be up for extra accommodation. How does driving at night, family on board, luggage, influence distance and time. Every time you have to recharge still has environmental impact. The power has to be generated somewhere. Out of sight out of mind.

I am having issues with my fiat 500e lease car had it since April going good untill a month ago I kept getting a onscreen warning saying something is wrong with the passenger airbag and the SOS assistance. I called fiat and they said take it to my local dealer but I didn't have time as it's 16 mile away and I go to work. But then as of a couple of week ago I was sometimes getting a seatbelt warning symbol and sound and it seemed to only happen when I was turning left lol....I tried to pull on the seatbelt in different directions and where it clips in to recreate the warning but it never happene donly when I drive and turn left. And now I keep getting all those warning but now it says one pedal driving unavailable and to use the normal break...and yep in range and Sherpa when this warning happens I take foot of accelerator and the car keeps going...no regen breaking. Just drove from work tonight and I had to drive 5 mile with all these warnings going off. I stopped my car twice turned it off but still happened. I've had the car since may I think it is...end of April start of may. And to top all that off last week lifting my boot lid I heard something rolling around inside my boot door/lid...where inside the boot you have that odd plastic that's coated in material covering the boot lid/door internals it sounds like sometjings come off inside there and rolling around when I'm driving or opening the boot. Does anyone know if these warnings etc could be the 12v battery needing to be replaced already?

most of these checks can be done by any standard garage. And even by any person by themselves. yet any updates are free for you to take to the garage to get. So NO need to spend £100's on an expensive not required service. I don't know how many include Breakdown cover in the service cost. ??? the cost of a cabin filter may be as little as a £10. even the wiper blades are less than that. So really I do not see the need for this annual service especially if your car is going for an MOT. which is cheaper and will cover more parts indepth. You are not getting a report on the battery so why do you have to pay for them to have a man Look at the car I found a service list for my car. One item was looking at the seatbelts for wear. and looking at the windscreen for chips or cracks All of which Is NOT required and need NO special high cost garage man to look at it.

I agree. I could be wrong though, My thought is since more cars are going electric, the service depts are going to lose money not doing oil changes, spark plugs and all the other systems that petrol cars require. In response they are convincing owners these expensive services are needed on their EVs. Many of these services owners can do themselves. Changing a cabin filter, our dealer charges 120. The filter is 15 and can be done in under 5 minutes by the owner. Windscreen fluid is cheap and can be done easily as well.

Basically electric cars don't need service. If you have Tesla where software updates are done over the air you can check fluids and change filters yourself no need to waste 150 quid. Also VW use drum brakes at the rear so they don't rust.

Drum brakes rust too. Maybe slower and you can't see it. A good friend's parents stopped using their VW bus/camper. Over time the drum brakes rusted solid. Fact, in Australia the Ioniq 5 is more expensive to service than the similar size Hyundai Tucson over 5 years. This is criminal for a vehicle with so few moving parts compared to the petrol alternative from the same manufacturer. Sure you may save $ on electricity at typically 50c/kWh vs ULP at $1.80/litre but purchase price is double and insurance is 40% higher too. Admittedly the Ioniq at year 5 with average 75000km will have broken even on emissions (including construction) but once depreciation is added you will be $30000 worse off.

It's no doubt misleading for some who are on a 'leasehold' agreement where the agreement will specify terms and conditions that must be adhered to AND ie having your car serviced by those NOT permitted to do so? Even buying from a dealership where an agreement has been made re the servicing et is a CONTRACTUAL arrangement made at time of sale or purchase et failing to meet the terms and conditions that entails will mean a breach of 'contract' forfeiting rights afforded by that original agreement. Also specific dealerships / manufacturers agents et will have specific equipment onsite designed for their vehicles diagnostics and anyone under the illusion of one size fits all can be in for a rude awakening when something later on goes wrong.

That said, I have seen a Very Detailed Video Of servicing done on my Buddies Aston Martin, Be it an ICE vehicle, and the Fact that the Servicing was Outlandishly Expensive, That's the Least they could do for the POOR FELLER!!! To Say the Least. That service was $2000.00 +++, so the DVD / VIDEO Was a Nice Touch. 🤷‍♂😂. But an EV servicing, (in the States), with a VIDEO??? Never seen the Like.

Evs transfer the pollution from the tail pipe to a power plant and the environmental destruction to where the rare earth metals are mined.

@@Noah_E Not sure about the rest of the world with the war and all. But in the US the grid gets greener every year. My electricity is 13 cents KWH and nearly 50% of the electricity is from wind. Only West Virginia comes close to a 100% coal electrical generation over 90 percent. Even there the EV will break even in time and be pollution free for the rest of its life. When we have enough old EVs to recycle these new cars will have a very low carbon footprint. Coal is strip mining. You never stop mining coal. We burn the crazy stuff. Always need more.

Electric cars are simpler mechanically. But think of the process. Remember every time a change occur, you lose. Think of converting chemical energy to ac, then to dc, then to modulated and regulated ac, then to mechanical energy. Rather than converting chemical energy to mechanical energy.
@danharold3087

Every time a piston moves up and down it wears the cylinder. Just as the piston and cylinder have to be designed to last the life of the car, so does the battery on an EV. And you have the EV process mixed up. Maybe that is why you see it as a difficult thing. You start off on the wrong foot with the battery creating AC. Basically the DC from the battery is processed by electronics that may or may not be on as single board/box. It does the inverter thing to created signals for each phase of the motor with the correct voltage at the correct time.

1:38 there is absolutely nothing wrong with that brake disc. The actual disc is shiny which is all that matters. The other parts corrode on all cars. Stick to car reviews as you clearly know nothing about the mechanical gubbins.

Thank you for your helpful comment Rafton. The disc is clearly scored, but it was also worn below the minimum thickness. A new Leaf disc is 28 mm, the recommended minimum thickness is 26 mm and ours were at 24mm.

I'm guessing this is a sponsored video. Apart from the pollen filter at a major service what else do they actually do at a major service. Anyone can fit those at a much cheaper cost I'm sure. The videos will probably only tell you the tyre depths. Ask me how I know. Sorry but this is a make weight video at best. Unsubcribed.

Not a sponsored video. We even paid for the service, although the manager did give us his staff discount, which was nice of him. A major service seems to include the pollen filter, a 'gearbox' fluid check and the brake fluid change.

While they've put a positive spin on the robbery that is EV service, I think this video still has value. People who know are speaking up about the lack of value at an EV service. I'm also sympathetic to dealers, they make their money off used cars and parts. EVs contribute less to both of those markets. Also, Electrifying's other content is great!

@@Electrifyingcom They are looking hard for things to do and call them needed service. If that gearbox was on an ICE chances are that the mechanics would ignore it. Had a transfer case die on a 4WD pickup serviced by the dealer from day 1. It ran out of oil They said they don't check the transfer case.

I feel like the most disruptive part of EVs has not even been discussed or even considered. What if a manufacturer decided it did not want to be in the dealership, service, parts or warranty business at all and just pushed that back on parts companies and owners. This would require they sell the most basic, standard and well documented automobile that could safely be serviced by anyone using a very intelligent ChatGPT support prompt. Easy to find, service and swap parts. What if you could buy the car for $15k USD but all you got was a 2 year parts warranty and a support link.. what kind of person would buy such a car? I for sure would.
