Sadly, I have video of a Hunter guy training another guy on my carbon fiber wheels - left them ALL scratched. He didn't follow these instructions, it seems.

Is it ok to use the inside gripping tulip style table on the older hunter machines

Those machines are very good at rim protection. The act of clamping the wheel with a tulip clamp will not damage the carbon fiber wheel provided the jaw protection are in good shape. But most carbon fiber applications are very high performance assemblies so older tulip clamp designs may not have the holding power necessary for every application.
