Sesame Street is absolutely wonderful! Growing up dirt poor in the streets of Manila in the Philippines in thé 70s and in the early 80s, I learned how to speak and understand English through Sesame Street. I miss Big Bird, Ernie and Bert, Maria, Bob, Olivia and everybody. My work has taken me to Hong Kong, Riyadh, Toronto, Atlanta, San Francisco, and now Singapore, and, when people ask me if I grew up in America, I tell them I grew up in Sesame Street.

My sentiments exactly! What are your thoughts on some of the newer additions and characters? I, actually, really like them (,but I guess it's because I grew up with sesame Street in the 90s). My favorite newer characters are telly, Abby cadabby, hoots and Julia. My favorite classic characters are Oscar, Bert and Ernie, Grover, count von count, Cookie monster, and Grover.

Same here as well. Honestly, considering Sesame Street really has lasted for half a century so far, it's hard to believe it actually did not exist prior to 1969(unbelievable but true), so at the same time, now that I think about it, it's also hard to imagine how people like my parents, for example(and even earlier generations going further yet back in time)would have developed their alphabet and counting skills as preschoolers(I know they all did, e.g.,as with say, those real outdated alphabet blocks, but still you know what I mean, kind of like how it's hard to picture how people managed in the 19th century before the days of electricity, with only oil lamps, candles, etc, and heck, even when I was growing up when it was before the days of the internet and mobile phones I certainly had no idea that one day, for example, they would invent a new kind of phone that would phase out public telephones, or a new kind of "letter writing" that would supplant actual letter writing(email, of course, and pertaining to the internet, which has also phased out telephone books greatly and "dated" paper job applications. Anyway, now that Sesame Street has actually been in production for 50 years and helped children not just here in the U.S. but around the GLOBE, how hard it is to believe that people like my parents actually would not have benefited from watching Sesame Street(as it didn't exist prior to 1969).

Wow! I can't believe that you met Caroll Spinney in person, Haley! I can tell that he's a kind person. I grew up listening to his voice on Sesame Street for many years. I should think about writing him a letter letting him know that I really enjoy his work. He has so many stories to tell. I had just recently read an article where he as Big Bird had a phone conversation with a five-year-old boy named Joey, who was very ill with cancer. It was so sad, yet beautiful. That article was a few years old, but that story must have taken place in the mid-1980s.

PBS is responsible for making me, and most of my generation the people we are today. I was already way past learning my numbers and letters when Sesame Street arrived (I'd learned to read and do simple math by the age of 4) but I still loved the show and its counterpart The Electric Company. WTTW was my public television station growing up and while I was only allowed to watch 2 hours of TV a day if I chose to watch cartoons, my mom let me watch all the PBS shows I wanted. I was a Masterpiece Theater addict! I couldn't get enough of shows like Upstairs/Downstairs. I was also addicted to their Sunday night comedy line up which introduced me British comedies like "No, Honestly", "The Two Ronnies" and of course, "Monty Python's Flying Circus." WTTW was truly my window to the world (which is what the acronym stands for.) I learned to cook with Julia Child, Graham Kerr and Jeff Smith! And there are a host of learning and entertainment programs that help us all learn and grow and opened our eyes to all the possibilities of who we are and who can can become. If someone asked me, "Who's your favorite teacher?" I'd have to say PBS. And it all started with Sesame Street!

February 3, 2019: i remember when Oscar was orange with black eyebrows and when grover was dark green. and ernie and bert look a little different today then they did in 1969. I also remember a lot of sesame street segments. one I like is called "mrs Wilson's garden". it's about a girl named jenny who went to visit her mom's friend, mrs Wilson, who had a garden behind her house. I first saw that segment in 1971 or 1972, but I found out it was filmed sometime in 1969. does anyone know the exact date that segment was filmed on and if mrs Wilson still lives in that same house and does she still have a garden? I also remember another segment about a man who went forwards while everything and everyone else went backwards. at one point in that video, a chef was unwriting stuff from a chalkboard. as he moved the chalk along the writing, the writing disappeared. the man asked him "how did you do that?" and the chef replied "do what?"
@MrJamieMurph41419695 жыл бұрын
Both of those segments you mentioned are on youtube. The latter I also remember, it's from season 6 or 7 I believe(but don't quote me, although it definitely is from the 1970s.) I saw it frequently; I watched SS all thru the 70s.

And yes, Grover was originally green. However, he did not have a specific name at first, although Kermit sometimes called him "funny face," or something like that as seen in this one early segment from the first season where Kermit tries to have Grover get in the box, only Grover can't because Fred the dragon(of Ed Sullivan show fame)is in the box.
