After the episode aired Mr Rogers had Margaret Hamilton on his show to explain to the kids that it was all pretend and to not be afraid. What a gem to humanity he was.

When I was little watching Sesame Street, The Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie and the witch was my favorite character. If I had seen this when I was a kid I wouldn't have been scared, I would have exploded with sheer ecstasy. Would have been like an anime character getting that excited nosebleed.

I was both 9 and 10 in 1976. And I still watched Sesame Street. I don’t remember seeing that episode at the time. But I don’t think I would’ve been afraid of it. I think I would’ve been fascinated.

I can see why little kids would find this scary, considering that the witch is the most terrifying character in media… although I don’t think it’s that scary from my point of view… I can’t understand why it would be pulled from air as back, then which is were still the most scariest things that kids fear

I guess it’s a bit unnerving for younger audiences who aren’t used to this sort of change in atmosphere and character from their usual familiar and friendly tone.

The part where the witch could not get her broom as long as someone else was holding, it is similar to how she couldn’t get the Ruby slippers off Dorothy as long as she was alive

I remember being a kid and Freddy Krueger was out and Jason was out and Michael Myers was out and so on and so forth, add none of them scared me. But the wicked witch of the west? I was absolutely positively f****** terrified of that woman.

None of those other movie villains ever bothered me, except for Freddy. When I was about five years old, I had a neighbor who had a Freddy poster on the back of his closet door. He knew I was terrified of it. So, he would lock me in his closet, while I screamed, cried and begged for him to let me out. The POS knew how scared I was of that poster, but he'd get his sadistic pleasure out of hearing me scream. Wish I could say that was the only thing he did to me, but unfortunately it wasn't. He did other unspeakable things that I do not wish to type into a KZbin comment 😔

That episode reminded me quite a bit of "The Paul Lynde Halloween Special", also from 1976 and featuring Margaret Hamilton reprising the role as the Wicked Witch of the West. The part with Margaret appearing as herself to represent the Witch disguising as a harmless old lady was also similar, with the Witch taking on the identity of Paul's elderly housekeeper Margaret. And, like this episode, it only aired once and never again, but that was because it was a primetime holiday variety special that quickly became dated.

Despite the ominous tones, I feel like kids these days could probably handle this easily. There is all kinds of weird crap on KZbin kids RIGHT NOW that would seem unnerving to the average adult, but ime they just click right through it due to a lack of negative/positive associations between things that they see on a screen. Glued to the iPads all day, many of them are very used to extreme changes of the input they receive from a screen in a split second. Whether it be sounds, or a complete setting, character, or color change in a single click by opening an app, etc. I think they should bring this one back and see how it is perceived today

Was it banned because it was too scary or because the writing was just bad? Someone refused to give her the broom back and she justifiably got angry.

I just watched the episode and I didn't find it scary at all. Except maybe when the witch gets shocked when she tries to grab the broom. And I watched the Wizard of Oz as a kid and that has to be one of least emotionally scarring moments of my childhood. On the other hand, I was very frightened of some pretty weird things.

I don’t get why it was scary in the Sesame Street one because it wasn’t scary at all. I don’t know why they banned it even because if anything, it teaches kids how to say please when they want something.
