When he says play the patterns a little ahead of the beat, he means that you should move from chord to chord with the same timing as you would with a real guitar and not with piano playing timing. If you play guitar, you know what I'm talking about. The instrument does not lag or need time to catch up. It is designed that way to create a more realist sound from chord to chord. If you're doing it correctly, you'll hear all the little nuances, like the fingers sliding across the strings in between chords. Great video!
